NYDN: Annie Apple, mom of Giants CB Eli, blasts John Mara over Josh Brown scandal: ‘He just doesn’t get it’

Yes, I know...another Brown thread. However, having the mother of a player (and someone who was a DV victim herself) speak out is news.

My own opinion, for what it's worth, is that when Mara and the Giants FO learned about Brown's issues, they should have told him to take a year off from football, while he was undergoing treatment/counselling.

To think that Brown could handle playing football while he was out of control in his personal life was playing with fire. To re-sign a player who could be suspended (six games for a first offense) is too great a risk for a kicker, and it didn't do Brown any favors as well.

'To think that Brown could handle playing football while'...
Torrag : 10/22/2016 11:38 am : link
...he was handling playing football quite well judging by his performance so far.

As far as her comments until the recent release of new documents changed the situation John Mara's and the Giants actions and comments regarding this issue were well thought out and reasonable. When new information became available they responded accordingly.

Any 'furor' over this is unfounded. imo.
All this could've been avoided if they'd got rid of Brown

this past off season after they had "already" known about his past incident, yet created this themselve..you reap what you sow

There is nothing unfounded. They were aware of his outrageous behavior at the Pro Bowl. They were aware of at least some of his last history. They could have been aware of all of it if they or the NFL bothered to investigate it. The fact that he was re-signed after that pro bowl is ridiculous. And the franchise has to deal with egg on their faces because of their empty statements about having a zero-tolerance policy and Mara's misguided "I have daughters" speech. Many fans wanted to move on when the team was afforded the excellent opportunity to cut bait when his contract was up. Of course half this board was blaming Brown's wife for all this back then - another embarrassing turn of events.
Poor Eli Apple.

To the contrary, he's got a smart, confident woman as a mother. I wouldn't pity him for that.

I know that kind of thing terrifies you in your capacity as BBI's resident misogynist. But it doesn't make it less true.

still not exactly sure how much of this latest information the Giants knew when they resigned Brown. But as I and some others said, what they knew when they resigned him should have been enough to prevent them from doing so. They messed up, including Mara.

The Giants also had a lot of holes to fill this offseason, and probably didn't want to add another by having to find a new kicker. I wonder if that influenced their decision to resign Brown.

This. The Giant's decision to offer Brown a contract knowing there was DV history is mind boggling. When talking about the class of the Giant organization, stuff like this chips away at that.

Maybe Annie Apple should STFU until her son actually gets on the field.

I'm not a fan of Eli Apple's mom constantly in the news but in this case, she absolutely should speak out. Domestic violence is an American problem, not just an NFL problem
I responded to her tweet
Giantcol22 : 10/22/2016 1:22 pm : link
By stating she's putting her son in tough spot by bashing his boss. She then proceeded to block me lol! But in reality whether she's right or not she's putting her son in a bad position.
She's definitely putting him in a bad spot

But it's a controversy brought on by themselves with incredibly odd and poor decision making.
I also think she

likes the attention. Not to say she her feeling against DV aren't sincere.

I hope this is just baiting because 'telling' a survivor of abuse to shut up about speaking up (and honestly) about it is gross.

I doubt Eli is embarrassed by this or would be afraid of the consequences from it.
Was there any legit merit to these allegations at the time the Giants
robbieballs2003 : 10/22/2016 2:13 pm : link
signed Brown? To my understanding it was a he said she said situation. How many of these situations turn out to he complete bullshit? Too many. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? I think you know the phrase about hindsight. I cannot fault the Giants for signing him in the first place. Even after the first suspension it seemed more he said she said which is why he was only suspended a game. Most fans at the time were very critical of Goodell for this. There seemed to be a severe lack of evidence. Brown himself never admitted anything at that point in time. Imo, we really don't know what evidence the Giants had access to throughout all of this. All we really know is when the police department or whoever released all of this information on Wednesday or Thursday that the Giants acted swiftly and said he was not going to play for them. Why is it so hard for people to be patient and let the facts come out? Why is it hard for people to believe in innocent until proven guilty? Should the Knicks have gotten rid of Derrick Rose because he was accused of rape? Should the Giants have gotten rid of Bromley because he was accused of rape? There are countless stories like this and, like I have said numerous times, there are no winners in these situations. It is beyond sad that these situations occur as well as when people lie about them.
way to put your son in a very awkward position

Best comment on this whole saga
It seems that some of you are more bothered by Annie Apple's comments

than you are with Brown beating his wife, and how the organization dropped the ball. Very revealing actually.

No way. Annie Apple is a smart intellectual woman. I value her opinion greatly. I wish she would provide us with more of her handy insight. She is totally saying what no one else will say! I hope I could read some more Shaun King articles too.
I stand by my comment
David in LA : 10/22/2016 6:15 pm : link
that your indignation over her comments is pretty revealing, when the actual problem lies in poor judgement from the organization, and someone beating a woman. So far Shaun King, and Annie Apple are greater sources of your ire than Josh Brown. Very interesting indeed.

Who is angry here, Davey? I'm a big fan of Annie Apple, haven't you noticed? I follow her on Twitter and read all the interesting stuff she says all the time. You know, all the giggles. Shaun King is in no way a biased writer either and I totally am on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what he has to say next. Josh Brown can go fuck himself. #AnnieAppleMatters

Compare Annie to Brown's wife.

Another smart, confident woman whose husband has beaten the shit out of her at least 21 times that we know of, and verbally abused her perhaps a couple of hundred other times.

I have given the Giants the benefit of the doubt so many times. This one crossed miles over the line, imo. It will take years for the Giants' management to rehabilitate itself after inexcusably lazy and self-serving behavior.

I'm really proud of Brown, though, He now realizes that pummeling your wife's face repeatedly and leaving her in a condition of constant fear might not be such a good idea.

Whata man, whata man, whata man what a mighty good man.

Eli Apple wasn't given a job out of the goodness of the Maras' or the Giants heart. They thought highly of his skills enough to draft him in the first round. So who is at a disadvantageous position here? The Maras or Eli Apple? If they want to do anything in response to Apple's mother's comments, then they shoot themselves in the foot by not using a talented player in a needy position. Otherwise, what she said has done nothing but show everyone that she isn't afraid to speak her mind, especially when she has first hand experience of such terrible actions.

And she is her own person whether she is the mother of a player or not. He's a big boy. I'm sure he can take care of himself.

The Giants made their own bed, and they are deservingly taking a hit. Some of you may want to look past this being your favorite team and think about the whole Brown fiasco and how it came about before bashing a survivor of domestic violence voicing her opinion in response to what she perceives as an owner, who appears tone both tone deaf and a hypocrite in this entire fiasco.

Doesn't it make some sense that this situation must be unique and doesn't actually remove half a dozen decades of being a good person who is respected and highly thought of? The thing is the kid deserves to not have his mother maybe cause him an issue. Doesnt matter who or what or where it is, you cant really call out the character of the guy who voluntarily added you to his franchise and gave you millions of bucks to rep his team. He's the owner. Its not unreasonable to assume any opinions about his character wouldn't be sent out to the world via the media. Its amazing how Giants fans are willing to assume the worst about a guy who has a track record of being far more philanthropic than sexist, racist, defefender of abuse.

Do you guys seriously think that Annie Apple is the biggest pain in the ass parent/family the Giants deal with?

Think Plaxicos lawyer wife made sure her interests were protected? Eric Flowers small cadre of the family that is his agent and moved so he could stay living with them? Think all kinds of potential divorcees and un comfortable pregnancies dont play out in interactions with the FO?

Think LTs wife was quiet?

Shockeys Mom?

High school and college coaches deal with nuisance parents all the time on every kind of team

Think those parents behavior ever stops?

Do you think Bradys father and wife and ex dont have to be managed?

Peytons nights out in small scene Indy didnt have to be kept under wraps?

There are no chaotic groupies and gold diggers that the Fo never has to deal with on every team?

Do you think the coaches read twitter last night and let it affect their decisions about a first round talent who shows great potential?

I dont think anything Annie Apple tweets affects the Giants on the field at all

Are you affected by tweets?
