NYDN: Annie Apple, mom of Giants CB Eli, blasts John Mara over Josh Brown scandal: ‘He just doesn’t get it’
Yes, I know...another Brown thread. However, having the mother of a player (and someone who was a DV victim herself) speak out is news.
My own opinion, for what it's worth, is that when Mara and the Giants FO learned about Brown's issues, they should have told him to take a year off from football, while he was undergoing treatment/counselling.
To think that Brown could handle playing football while he was out of control in his personal life was playing with fire. To re-sign a player who could be suspended (
six games for a first offense) is too great a risk for a kicker, and it didn't do Brown any favors as well.
As far as her comments until the recent release of new documents changed the situation John Mara's and the Giants actions and comments regarding this issue were well thought out and reasonable. When new information became available they responded accordingly.
Any 'furor' over this is unfounded. imo.

There is nothing unfounded. They were aware of his outrageous behavior at the Pro Bowl. They were aware of at least some of his last history. They could have been aware of all of it if they or the NFL bothered to investigate it. The fact that he was re-signed after that pro bowl is ridiculous. And the franchise has to deal with egg on their faces because of their empty statements about having a zero-tolerance policy and Mara's misguided "I have daughters" speech. Many fans wanted to move on when the team was afforded the excellent opportunity to cut bait when his contract was up. Of course half this board was blaming Brown's wife for all this back then - another embarrassing turn of events.
To the contrary, he's got a smart, confident woman as a mother. I wouldn't pity him for that.
I know that kind of thing terrifies you in your capacity as BBI's resident misogynist. But it doesn't make it less true.
The Giants also had a lot of holes to fill this offseason, and probably didn't want to add another by having to find a new kicker. I wonder if that influenced their decision to resign Brown.

This. The Giant's decision to offer Brown a contract knowing there was DV history is mind boggling. When talking about the class of the Giant organization, stuff like this chips away at that.

Wrong, again.
I'm not a fan of Eli Apple's mom constantly in the news but in this case, she absolutely should speak out. Domestic violence is an American problem, not just an NFL problem
I hope this is just baiting because 'telling' a survivor of abuse to shut up about speaking up (and honestly) about it is gross.
I doubt Eli is embarrassed by this or would be afraid of the consequences from it.
Best comment on this whole saga
No way. Annie Apple is a smart intellectual woman. I value her opinion greatly. I wish she would provide us with more of her handy insight. She is totally saying what no one else will say! I hope I could read some more Shaun King articles too.
People pissed off about this have their priorities completely out of whack
Tread carefully. He countered by calling you "Davey." You're dealing with a massive intellect, here.
I have given the Giants the benefit of the doubt so many times. This one crossed miles over the line, imo. It will take years for the Giants' management to rehabilitate itself after inexcusably lazy and self-serving behavior.
I'm really proud of Brown, though, He now realizes that pummeling your wife's face repeatedly and leaving her in a condition of constant fear might not be such a good idea.
Whata man, whata man, whata man what a mighty good man.
And she is her own person whether she is the mother of a player or not. He's a big boy. I'm sure he can take care of himself.
The Giants made their own bed, and they are deservingly taking a hit. Some of you may want to look past this being your favorite team and think about the whole Brown fiasco and how it came about before bashing a survivor of domestic violence voicing her opinion in response to what she perceives as an owner, who appears tone both tone deaf and a hypocrite in this entire fiasco.
Oh boy. Now the potheads are here..

Doesn't it make some sense that this situation must be unique and doesn't actually remove half a dozen decades of being a good person who is respected and highly thought of? The thing is the kid deserves to not have his mother maybe cause him an issue. Doesnt matter who or what or where it is, you cant really call out the character of the guy who voluntarily added you to his franchise and gave you millions of bucks to rep his team. He's the owner. Its not unreasonable to assume any opinions about his character wouldn't be sent out to the world via the media. Its amazing how Giants fans are willing to assume the worst about a guy who has a track record of being far more philanthropic than sexist, racist, defefender of abuse.
Think Plaxicos lawyer wife made sure her interests were protected? Eric Flowers small cadre of the family that is his agent and moved so he could stay living with them? Think all kinds of potential divorcees and un comfortable pregnancies dont play out in interactions with the FO?
