Cut Larry Donnell thread

est1986 : 10/23/2016 1:25 pm
This fucking guy, after showing promise early has been a absolute nightmare. He can go up and catch it with the very best.. But does anyone else get afraid watching him after the catch? It's either going to look like he has an easy first and he falls down short, or he jumps up and lands on his head, or he turns it over. Dude is "THE WORST" giants receiver "AFTER THE CATCH" I've seen by far. His blocking is equally bad he totally whiffs and misses assignments blocking. Odell is 6 inches shorter, 50 pounds lighter and can block better than Larry. Tye and Adams Have been better so far despite neither of them really doing anything either but Donnell is really, really bad. CUT HIM before the 1pm games are over.. Please and thanks.

So you're saying he's perfect for the offense?

Not really. We were in a cap crunch when Bennett was here which is why we couldn't match the 4 year deal he got from the Bears and I'm not sure when we were supposed to sign Walker.. he signed an extension with TEN while he was still under contract.

I'm talking about when Walker initially signed with Tennessee. And they also could have gotten Bennett for this season.
Donnell fucks up 10 times for every 1 great play...

not a good trade-off.

The real question is how can this coaching staff put up with this and keep playing this stiff, at some point his counter-productive play becomes totally UNACCCEPTABLE!

And that is the great question. What are the circumstances where a coach can honestly say Donnell is a better option on the play then someone else? They are pretty rare. I used to be a big fan of Donnell but simply can't see his value anymore. Cut him, bring in someone else, anything. But cut him and don't bring him back.

he is not a football player.
Did we see anything today that was worse than stuff Donnell

has previously done? Of course not, but they didn't get rid of him then and there's no reason to think they'll get rid of him now. It's puzzling how a player can be allowed to HURT the team for so long and not even fall down the depth chart, let alone be cut.
Its tough to find
YANKEE28 : 10/23/2016 7:20 pm : link
a replacement in the middle of a season.

One possibility is Brian Leonhardt, who is currently on the Vikings Practice Squad. He has been in the NFL 3 years, has some catches, and has been a 'final cut' type with the Raiders, 49ers, and Vikings.

He is well worth a shot and could develop with the right opportunity.
Nows the time to make this move

Its the bye. Make it happen Jerry.
I'll have to watch the fumble again
santacruzom : 10/23/2016 8:27 pm : link
But I honestly can't remember thinking he screwed it up. He was surrounded by seemingly half the defense, one member of which got a perfect hit on the ball. Or did I dream this?
if we cut this guy
Enzo : 10/23/2016 8:41 pm : link
I'm sure he would join Rueben Randle, Preston Parker, and Unga on the list of guys who have gone from prominent roles / starters for this team to out of football.

Reese might be joining them at some point in the near future.
Donnell
Marty866b : 10/23/2016 8:51 pm : link
The worst skill position player I have ever seen in the NFL. It is impossible to believe that there aren't MANY tight ends who have gotten cut by other teams who aren't better then him.
For the poster who said that Shockey at 36 would be better, I recently ran into him at the Fountainbleau and he is in great shape though of course, totally retired.
I understand Reese thinks

TE's are not important. Or, at least not important enough to devote real cap or draft resources to. But, one of the real tragedies of the Eli era of Giants football is the inability of this franchise you get a reliable starter at the TE position. No one is saying we need a dynamic playmaking All-Pro at this spot. What this team does need is an NFL caliber stater who can run the routes, catch the ball, break the occasional tackle and complete their responsibilities in the run game. A player who can do this consistently for at least a three year period.

Donnell is not this player. He was not even a TE in college. He is project who now projects to jack shit. He hurts the team and he is the opposite of the player described above.

I do not want anyone to lose their job, but I do want the Giants to look elsewhere for a TE. Donnell if cut would likely not be signed by any NFL club.

When you fumble, you screw up..put two hands on the ball and protect it..
his first fumble of the year, right?

Donnell and Newhouse are cases of addition by subtraction
Torrag : 10/23/2016 9:44 pm : link
As is Wade but I couldn't fit him in the above topic line.

The sooner both no longer wear the Blue jersey the better.

Donnell can't block, drops the ball far too frequently, runs the wrong routes regularly and is awful at ball security.

I'm not sure I would cut himqbut I would certainly demote him

to the #3 (not #2) TE.
The rookie TE Adams
LatHarv83 : 10/23/2016 9:47 pm : link
looks like the best TE on the roster physically. He looks the part, I guess he is just way too raw right now? I Just hope he can come along and play a bigger role in the 2nd half of the season because Donnell is horrible. I still wish there was a way we could have locked Bennett up when we had him although I know that's ancient history at this point
Steelers have a former NYG TE on their roster, Xavier Grimble

Donnell has been hurt a lot
KWALL2 : 10/23/2016 10:02 pm : link
He's an average player who doesn't make much with some + and - to his game.

I wouldn't point to this guy as the problem on the offense. And cutting him doesn't help anything.

Marty866b : 10/23/2016 10:14 pm : link
Donnell is not an average player. The only thing he does average is catch the ball and saying he's average at that is generous. He is awful at every other facet of the game. He is not an NFL caliber football player.
I think every Giants fan knew he was gonna fumble the ball
McNally's_Nuts : 10/23/2016 10:48 pm : link
On that play. It's as if the coaches lit into him last week for not running over a smaller defensive player to get the first down.

This week he tries to run over 2 of them.

He's basically the Ian Allen of tight ends
Donnell is a weird player in general
LatHarv83 : 10/24/2016 9:50 am : link
I think it's fair to say he's athletic, but at the same time clumsy and slow. Those things should seem to be at odds with eachother, but he somehow pulls off the combination. He can't block and it kills the running game. He is a fumble machine. Yes, yesterday's fumble was his first this season but he makes you hold your breath constantly with his history and just last week had a scare vs Baltimore where the ball was in danger.

Its not just the fumble.
Brown Recluse : 10/24/2016 10:19 am : link
Its the MISTAKES.

He is the same type of player as Reuben Randle.

Two big mistakes last week in running out of bounds and trying to leap over defenders with the ball in the air.

And then the fumble yesterday.

These are not "one time" issues either. They have plagued him his entire career here. At this point, he is not going to out grow them. He has had plenty of time. He is who he is. He epitomizes the mistake-prone nature of this team.

Sorry but this is not a player you want on the field.
