NFT: Kurobuta Pork

gidiefor : Mod : 10/24/2016 11:38 am
You all know I rave about The Pit Barrell Cooker. Well recently PBC did a promo for Snake River Farms. I was intrigued but their prices were way up there. Last week I got an email from them offering 30-40% off on their pork products -- and tried their Kurobuta Bacon --

SOOOO Goood!!

the Bacon is 30% off for the rest of this month and standard shipping is $9.99 for the order
their hams are 40% off -- same shipping deal

Kurobuta Pork is breed with Berkshire Pigs and "considered to be equal in status to “Kobe Beef""

Anyway -- I'm a believer in PBC and Kurobuta Pork -- and decided to share this with you -- here's the link to SRF's Kurobuta Pork page - there's no special code -- they have reduced their prices for the rest of October.

PeterinAtlanta : 10/24/2016 12:06 pm : link

Peter- it's $19 for a pound and a half of smoked/sliced Kurobuta belly - that's $12.66/lb -- and it's heavenly

I don't want their cure or smoke. I want plain. It's $109.00 for 5-6 lbs.
Allright I am trying 2 of them Gidie

I have had
jc in c-ville : 10/24/2016 7:38 pm : link
The Duroc pork and can't imagine anything better. May give it a try.
No disrespect to anyone here

But I continue to be mystified by the appeal of pork belly.

AlI I see is fat fat fat. If I could buy meat-only bacon I'd be a happy man.

And gidie- I thought you raised your own damn pigs!
true story - I once split a pig with gidie -
Del Shofner : 10/24/2016 8:26 pm : link
but I don't think he raised it, it was a fellow farmer in the co-op or something.

That was a lot of pork ...

Nah - our fellow farmers next door raise them, and I helped.
By the way
gidiefor : Mod : 10/24/2016 8:32 pm : link
pasture rsised pork like bershire is good fat. High in omega 3s
Ah
CRinCA : 10/24/2016 8:36 pm : link
So that's what was stuck in my head.

Amazing some of the BBI stuff I've retained over the years. I probably need a "clear history" function for my brain.

Meat only bacon is Canadian bacon.
That's ok for Eggs Benedict, buts it's essentially park tenderloin.
CRinCA : 10/24/2016 9:07 pm : link
I did do a google search and that British "back bacon" may be right up my alley. Not sure if readily available here. I'll have to look into it a bit further.
Canadian bacon is trimmed pork loin.
PeterinAtlanta : 10/25/2016 7:11 am : link
It's not tenderloin. "British" bacon is also pork loin but some of the fat is left on it. In other words, they're the same cut of meat.

CR --- see if you can find shoulder bacon too -- we have it available from time to time next door -- much less fat -- much more meat.
not-withstanding all of the side chat

the Kurobuta Pork bacon, when prepared properly, is like eating heavenly rich candy

You do not want to over cook it

There is a BBQ joint in Central Virginia that makes a pork belly sandwich that would change your mind very quickly. Done right, with a healthy mix of fat and meat, pork belly can be amazing.
Would

always see on tv cooking shows like Top Chef and they would make pork belly. Always wanted to try it. Had the opportunity about 6 months ago. WOW. Highly recommend it.
Got it yesterday

Extremely good flavor. Wish it was more a thicker cut, but quite tasty

I'm trying the ham this weekend -- that was 40% off

If they are good -- I'm ordering a full one for thanksgiving before the sale ends

Was thinking of the ham for the same reason - do you think it would hold until T-day?
ham will definitely hold
gidiefor : Mod : 10/28/2016 8:40 am : link
it comes frozen and it's cured --- no problemo -- but you will need freezer space for it
I will report back on the ham -- Sunday
gidiefor : Mod : 10/28/2016 8:41 am : link
... sale ends Monday
OK, if it ends Monday I'll probably order then
jcn56 : 10/28/2016 10:55 am : link
My freezer is full of fish, I need to move some out first.

Let me know I will also
If that ham is remotely close to how good that Bacon tastes
montanagiant : 10/28/2016 4:55 pm : link
I am all over it.
The ham is most excellent
gidiefor : Mod : 10/30/2016 7:33 pm : link
very fragrant, low salt delicate taste and wonderful texture

***Highly recommended!
maybe very fragrant
gidiefor : Mod : 10/30/2016 7:50 pm : link
is misleading -- should be delicately fragrant

still savoring it -- dinner was wonderful..
