NFT: Who has Apple TV?

LawrenceTaylor56 : 10/24/2016 3:05 pm
It's really the only thing Apple related I don't have. I have a Mac, IPad, and IPhone.

The reason I want to get it is to airplay hockey streams from my ipad to my tv. My question is, do you lose quality when doing this? Can you airplay any site?

Should I shell out the extra $50 for the latest generation? Or will the older generation suffice? Thanks
I have it on a couple of TV's

I must say, being able to mirror games on to my 65 inch from an iphone or ipad is awesome.

However, being able to mirror porn onto a 65 inch is the icing on the cake.
I have an older generation apple TV3

And yes, I use it specifically for Airplay. As to what you can and can't stream, you should be able to stream anything from a Web Browser, even Flash content from a Mac Computer. I've used it for NFL Game Pass. Also you can stream Amazon Video. Some Apple Apps you cannot stream. You cannot stream iTunes, however you can play iTunes Music, TV Shows and Movies directly on the Apple TV. Although it doesn't apply to an iPad you cannot stream a DVD played from the Apple DVD app. You may be able to play it from VLC.

As for shelling out the money for an ATV 4, its not necessary for Airplay, however there may be an ATV hockey app for ATV4 so you wouldn't have to bother with Airplay.

Lmao. Do you lose quality when doing this? Does it become a little more blurry? Asking for a friend.

Thanks for the response! If I'm on firstrowsports, can I airplay one of their streams as well?

You can mirror your whole device over airplay, so whatever is on your iPad or macbook or whatever will show up on the TV via Apple TV.
An inexpensive alternative
VTDAD : 10/24/2016 3:39 pm : link
is to get a HDMI adapter and mirror your iPad
via your TV HDMI port. Not wireless, but anything
on your iPad screen can be viewed on your TV
I have a couple of older gen Apple TV's

and the video is very good when streaming from my iPad of iPhone. My only real gripe about it is that it doesn't allow you to download streaming apps.
I use roku and chromecast
mattlawson : 10/24/2016 3:58 pm : link
And I own many apple devices - in doing the research I felt this was the best way to go for me

Streaming via chromecast works well - it's not like HDMI, it can slow down and get choppy at times.
I have an older gen

one and it works great. I use it for Netflix, MLB tv, Airplay, etc and have never had an issue. I think the Firestick can do a lot of the same things at a lower cost but I prefer the user interface with the Apple tv.
Only

really annoying thing about AppleTv is their unwillingness to allow Spotify to have an app (since they are competitors) for whatever the reason I find spotify choppy when I use airplay otherwise using airplay 99% excellent.
AppleTV4

One advantage of the newest version of AppleTV I believe is that it is integrated with the home automation planned. But Apple seems VERY far behind here.
I had to return the 4th gen
rasbutant : 10/24/2016 5:20 pm : link
I have a projector. The 4th gen only has an HDMI output, that's it. The 3rd gen has the HDMI and a Digital out for audio. So I plan to buy the 3rd gen when it goes on sale.

Also, Amazon and spotify don't work with it.

we have one
santacruzom : 10/25/2016 3:31 pm : link
but we only use it to watch movies our friend has purchased and shares via iTunes. Everything it does can be done better and faster by other devices we own.
My biggest gripe with Apple TV 4 is sound issues
aimrocky : 10/25/2016 3:37 pm : link
My home theater system goes through an AV Receiver, but the Apple TV will not allow the Receiver to decode the sound quality. For example, a movie can be streamed at Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround, but the quality is outputted by my Receiver as Stereo.
I do and I love it
Vin R : 10/25/2016 4:36 pm : link
Add in Netflix for $10 & Sling for $20.. All set

You can get an audio extractor from Amazon or B&H (or anywhere else). Prices from a few bucks to hundreds. This lets you split the audio out of the hdmi cable and get your optical audio connector. You can also use a 3rd gen Apple TV as a "speaker" and airplay the apple tv 4 to it - which is only relevant if you have both and one is laying around. Amazon and Spotify can also be AirPlay'd.

That said, I think the Fire TV is a better all around streaming box unless you are already in the iTunes environment because you can 'cast' your iOS devices to it, you have all the same content with very little missing, and you its basically Android TV so there are other things you can do with it.
B&H search for you - ( New Window )
