We've had a hearty discussion regarding OBJ's penalty for taking off his helmet after his go-ahead TD against the Ravens. There were lively back and forth among many posters regarding the validity of the penalty, the immaturity of OBJ, and the impact it had on the final Ravens' drive. With that in mind, Raiders' Michael Crabtree was penalized for celebrating a TD. I'm sure there can be arguments from both sides regarding the validity of this celebration. What do you think?
Doing a throat slash gesture as a celebration is against the rules and has been for a long time, so it’s an easy 15-yard penalty that players should be able to avoid. Oakland Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree wasn’t able to avoid the penalty Sunday, even though he didn’t even do one.
Crabtree celebrated a 2-yard touchdown pass against the Jacksonville Jaguars just before halftime by tossing the ball. Along the way, his hand was close to his throat. Evidently that was close enough for officials to assess an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. |

Now you are asking them to make more judgment calls based on celebrations. For a flag to be called on Crabtree there, the official (figuratively) already has his hand on the flag just waiting for anything to give him an excuse to throw it.
The officials have to be disciplined/fined/suspended for decisions like these. With no accountability comes no change.
just ridiculous.

I thought it ended up being on the Rams

does anyone have video of the unsportmanlike penalty after the Collins TD? Announcers claimed it was on Hart, though it kind of sounds like they called it on Owa if you listen to the ref in the background Link - ( New Window )

No, it was on the Giants. They announcers claimed they initially announced it on the Rams, but from the link in my previous post, they announce it has "#68 (or 58?) on the 'defense'". I'm guessing the confusion (aside from Harlan probably being drunk) was that the Rams were technically on 'defense' after the INT.
his first words on the first day were do not anticipate a penalty, so in other words do not throw a flag unless you see the entire penalty...
his second was do not become part of the game, no one is there to see you, let the players play, you are there just to keep the game clean...
it seems like now officials want to be celebrities and be part of the game, everyone wants to be known and it is ruining the game...

I heard it as 58: Owa. I think you're right. No idea what caused the penalty though.
True...however, throwing a flag when you think you saw something is exactly why these refs are getting shit on so badly. They should err on letting the game play out unless they are sure that an infraction happened. They shouldn't throw the flag on something that's totally wishywashy.
I'm so sick of the over-policing of celebrations. Soccer allows team celebrations and only issue yellow cards when a player takes off his jersey or jumps into the crowd. The celebrations add to the entertainment; let them be. Run the play clock once they score, and if their elaborate celebration leads to a delay of game, then penalize them. Otherwise, who cares? As long as they aren't in the face of another player and taunting them, it shouldn't matter if 3-4 guys are doing a dance move to celebrate their team putting up 6 points.
