The matchup of two long-suffering franchises is an opportunity to reflect on some important milestones in baseball history. When Dexter Fowler comes to the plate tomorrow night, he will be the first Cubs hitter to do so in a century. The last time a Cubs batter came to the plate, integration had not yet happened and would not do so for another 40 years.
On the other side, the last Indians championship team featured the first two black World Series champions, Larry Doby and Satchel Paige and was a pioneer in baseball integration.
Long droughts or not, always interesting to realize these milestones are not that far in the past.
messed it up

The Yankees have played 153 World Series games - almost a full season - since the Cubs last played one.

That's not right. The Cubs last played in the Series in 1945 - 71 years ago.
He was the GM when the Red Sox ended their drought and if he's the President of when the Cubs break theirs that is a feat unlikely to ever be duplicated (not with those team obviously, but any teams).

Hell, even if they lose he got 'em there for the first time in 71 years. I think his ticket's punched for Cooperstown already.

Theo Epstein should add his name to the HOF ballot for 2017 or whenever executives are eligible.

Yeah probably true. A better story if they win though.

I think he means first black player for Chicago, last time 1945 was two years prior to Jackie Robinson.

So you're saying a black player played for the Cubs in 1908?

Yeah I done fucked that up. What I was getting at was that the last time the Cubs were in the WS was pre-integration but yes, 1908 was not their last Series appearance.
This time, this series, is different. It is history in the making, and I feel I shouldn't miss it. I better watch the games. Do others feel the same way or something similar?
I hope the president throws out the first pitch in Chicago and they commemorate the event.
