i know most on here don't like Peter King and i think i definitely enjoyed his column more 15 years ago, but this was spot on.

oh and for what its worth, he named Collins his DPOW as well.

I think I simply cannot believe the league fined Odell Beckham Jr. $24,309 for taking his helmet off as he was leaving the field at the end of a play. This is an inexcusable sanction. The average personal income for an American male with a bachelor’s degree in the United States today (according to Wikipedia) is $49,804. Odell Beckham Jr. was fined six months’ salary of the average American man with a college education for taking his helmet off in celebration as he left the field after scoring a touchdown. Give the man a 15-yard penalty and leave it there. The NFL has the right to fine players for unsportsmanlike conduct fouls, but they don’t have to. Jon Runyan, the league’s first-year discipline czar, chose to fine Beckham that egregious amount. No wonder so many fans and media people flail away at the league endlessly. And don’t get me started on the Vernon Davis free throw fine ($12,154).
Jon Runyan is doing the fines now?

Why is disciplinary fines from the league an entry-level position? I get giving former players jobs, but this is dumb.
It also doesn't help to create

The appearance of objectivity / independence to have a guy who played 10+'years for the Philadelphia Eagles doling out fines to a NYG player. I'd say the same exact thing if the roles were reversed.
Apparently Runyan fined OBJ a dollar

Ridiculous, yes,

but the good thing is that these fines are donated to charity and the players can deduct them.

However, these guys make so much money that the write off isn't all that helpful.

bend Roger & the owners over the next time they go to the table. Shit like this makes it hard to believe the players are even part of a union.

Hehe, when I read Runyan's name I had the same thought, except it was a buck for every time he made him his bitch.

Just when you thought you couldn't hate the NFL brass more, they find new ways to motivate you. Great job Roger!

They won't. There will be a strike and most of the people will side with the owners as usual and the players will get crushed.
NFL & Fines

Think about this - how many players does this effect - 1% of the union. Majority of which are WR's

This is so low on the players list of importance it wont even be brought up. Does any OL/DL give a shit about this - no. It is such a non issue for the union.

Beckham's still on his rookie deal and makes a lot less than Lynch was making. Based on perusing that article, if Beckham's fines exceed 2% of his salary, then he can deduct them. Beckham makes $1.36M this year, so fines exceeding ~$27k can be deducted. He's already been fined ~$72k this year.

Yea, I doubt this gets brought up in the CBA. It really needs to be addressed by the rules committee long before that.

If there really is a dip in ratings, maybe they'll seriously look at eliminating some of these flags for celebrating, which:
1. Slow the game down
2. Serve no purpose
3. Some enjoy the (TD) celebrations and find them entertaining
Eh, the league is hoping Beckham gets the message

which he is having a hard time hearing.

His NFL salary is just one form of income. He also makes a ton of $$ from his NFL endorsements, etc. Spare me the math.
he lost me when he compared beckhams fine to

Personally, I don't think it's a good thing at all. Not that I'm not altruistic, although that might be part of it. But, I don't like the idea of incentivizing punishment.

If they want to send a message, then maybe they should use a legitimate vehicle. If you used a trumped up foul and fine, then you send a message that the league is out to get you and your behavior is irrelevant to that. When punishment is not linked to an actual transgression, you risk failing to cause improvement, because the person feels like good or bad he receives punishment, so why change.

So you think it's perfectly fine to pick and choose who and when and how much the league punishes players, because they decide they want to "send a message"? Ummm, alrighty then. I can tell you're another huge Beckham fan in BBI. This place is something else. Find any reason in the world to shit on him. If only Beckham were as saintly as the masses here are
I think it's great that the media
BurlyMan : 10/25/2016 10:18 am : link
is piling on the NFL for anything that contributes to their flawed product and hypocrisy.

VenteSette : 10/25/2016 11:13 am : link
they picked and chose Beckham because he has been getting a bunch of personal fouls and seems a bit out of control. I am personally fine with celebration (and truth be told, taunting) the rule about taking your helmet off has been in place for ages.
He. Did. Nothing. Fucking. WRONG.
Don in DC : 10/25/2016 3:13 pm : link
He was fucking out of bounds and not even looking at a ref when he took the fucking helmet off. This is complete bullshit.

I find OBJ to be a childish asshole, truth be told. But he didn't do a goddamn thing wrong on that play.
