NFT: Your New York Knicks open at Cleveland tonight!

Let's Go!!!

+++

I'm battling mixed emotions. Definitely want the road win tonight and to ruin Bron-Bron's party. (Best night for me would be Knicks/Cubs wins.) But also realize it's a long damn haul.

Hoping for 45-plus wins. I'd view that as a very solid season, especially if they went into the playoffs with decent health (and especially that of the main rotation guys).

Can I even dare to wish for a few bench surprises and a better-than-expected contribution there?

There's still time to dream, and that's exactly what I plan to do.

Let's beat the dreaded Cavaliers!!!
Vegas has us at 38.5 wins
Deej : 10/25/2016 11:24 am : link
Im not picking a win total this year due to injury risks and questions over the PGs.

I do think that KP will not get off as many shots as he should, but overall will have a season that leaves us speculating that he is a future MVP.
Yeah I think they
giantsfan44ab : 10/25/2016 11:25 am : link
Get around 45 wins, factoring in Noah and Rose missing time. I like the bench a lot. LT, Jennings and I think KOQ steps up.

As long as his efficiency continues to improve I will take it even if he has as many or even less ppg as last year. I'm mostly excited to see his development on defense. He looks a tad bit stronger and is probably better conditioned. Lee, KP and Noah can be the pieces of a top 10 defense.
We're gonna get off to a very very slow start
Anando : 10/25/2016 11:28 am : link
But hopefully should be fun to watch.

Just hoping we don't get blown out tonight.
I think the Knicks will have to endure injury issues
djm : 10/25/2016 11:37 am : link
but the injury stuff can be overstated. Many teams have concerns if not all. MAny star players shed the injury label mid way through a career too.

Nothing is etched in stone. The Knicks have a pretty good and talented roster with upside. Let's see how things shake out. People act like they know Noah and Rose will miss half the season and other teams are free of the injury risk.
This just in ... let the fun begin!
Beezer : 10/25/2016 11:47 am : link

Joakim Noah on being at Cav's ring night:

"Congratlations to Cleveland, ev en though it's not a vacation spot."

bahahahahahahahaha
I have this dream
Enzo : 10/25/2016 12:03 pm : link
of Rose and Jennings getting into the lane and causing all kinds of havoc for opposing defenses....while Melo makes it rain all day from the outside and KP makes the leap into a hybrid Tyson Chandler/Dirk. If all of those fun things happens this team will cruise to the playoffs and, if they meet, take two games from Cleveland in a 7 game series.

On the other hand, I think the bench is potentially a major weakness and Rose/Noah are obviously huge question marks. And even if everyone is healthy, these pieces simply might not fit together.

If they have decent injury luck, I say 47 wins.

jennings and shumpert absokutely hate each other...

i am sure noah and thompson will get into it a couple of times...

knicks actually match up well with cavs on paper but i still dont expect a win tonight but i do expect a battle
I like this team
Svengali : 10/25/2016 12:45 pm : link
I like the bench, The games should be entertaining.
Good of Noah to taunt a Cavs team
Deej : 10/25/2016 12:52 pm : link
that might run us off the floor.
I ask the same question every year:
Unemployable : 10/25/2016 12:52 pm : link
Do the Knicks have a first round pick this year or did they trade it away for the usual garbage? And if they do, is there any nonsense like if it's in the top ten it's going to another team?

I guess one positive of bringing in battle-tested vets is that they're not going to shrink in a big game. Whether or not we're good enough to actually play in big games is the question.

NYK: 98
CLE: 93

Porzingod 27 points, 16 rebounds, 5 blocks in the opener

Jennings 4/5 from downtown 21 points 9 assist
I think the Vegas
kash94 : 10/25/2016 5:22 pm : link
line of 38 is pretty accurate. Team is 100% better than last year but still a lot of question marks:

1- What is the coaching philosophy? Triangle or up-tempo. Seems to be a hybrid so far but we've heard that before...

2- Chemistry. Only 5 of 15 players were on the team last year I think and a new head coach. Will take some time to gel. Furthermore is Rose a good fit next to Melo as both of them are high volume scorers (I think they'll be fine personally but who knows).

3- Bench. Not as big of a fan as most of the people here. I like Jennings, Holiday, and Lance a lot. Hernangomez and O'Quinn are interesting but extremely unproven though. Ndour and Plumlee shouldn't be counted on. If Noah or Porzingis get hurt that position becomes a mess.

4- Health. We all know about Rose and Noah but Melo and Jennings have had a few injuries past two years as well so something to monitor.
I think
kash94 : 10/25/2016 5:23 pm : link
38 is my prediction for the year. 45+ if Rose, Noah, Melo, and Jennings all play 65+ games
Also
kash94 : 10/25/2016 5:34 pm : link
this may sound weird but I'll take a big jump from Porzingis over a low playoff seed 100%. That should be the biggest focus this season looking long term

Well I think anyone would haha. But I hardly see how those are mutually exclusive. A big jump in KP's development alone would've been optimism for a playoff run aside from getting Rose, Jennings lee and Noah. They might need time to mesh but the players the Knicks were trottting out last year compared to this year is night and day.
Liked the moves the Knicks made this summer

I know Rose & Noah aren't going to play a ton of minutes right away, but the rotation has to be tweaked a bit... when the Cavs start the quarter with LeBron & Kyrie, the Knicks can't have 5 bench players on the floor.

you rush when you are still learning how to play with the guy next to you...

its going to take at minimum 20 games before you really start to see the starting 5 play well with each other...

How does he have a job after that game/

1 - Called Hernangomez 'hernandez' at least 5 times in first half.
2 - 'Melo is finally happy to be playing for a former player in horneck.' Do the last three coaches not count?
3 - 'vujacic is back with the knicks after playing last season with LA and nets'. Was on knicks all last season.

Marv had to correct him multiple times. Did he only have two months to prepare for this game? I guess he is so dumb, he count basic numbers like timeouts!

But it's kind of a bummer that 4 years into the Jax reign and we're really. O closer to competing with the Cavs than we were on day 1

At least we have Zinger to build around once Melo, Rose et al are gone

Well, we have the second quarter to hang our hat on. They played really well the second quarter...

LBJ did not like the O charge call against him and then just said I have had enough of the JV team and proceeded to work on his ESPN highlight reel - throw down, throw down, block, assist, game time.

Seeing Melo barking on the bench after his third quarter, which sucked, annoyed me.

admittedly, I watched about 25% Knicks game, 75% World Series game last night. so didn't see enough of the game to offer an informed review, just being a cranky Knicks fan...and of course we have to give this group time. It's just such a tired routine to see them get run off the court like that

Let's give Melo credit, he did manage to get a steal in garbage time. DPOY?

what did you expect when Phil got here? The Knicks were three years away from even attempting to field a legit NBA roster unless they got extremely lucky two summers ago with FA. That was always a pipe dream. They hit on KP. That's all one could have realistically hoped for when Phil got here.

People act like Phil inherited a franchise that was ready to start over and blow things up. The Knicks were hamstrung when Phil walked in. Only one high draft pick over a 3 year period...

Now is the time to expect significant progress but last night was one game.

They really shit on the Knicks. Shaq said he didn't know who any of the five Knicks on the court were at one point and they agreed after one game that they are the second best team in NYC and would miss the playoffs.

If the Knicks finish behind the Nets Hornacek and Phil Jackson should both be fired on the spot...

Dolan didnt fire Sather, and I think Sather and Phil are pretty similar -- old hand legends with fistfuls of rings and lots of confidence. The presence of Sather drew all the criticism to him rather than Dolan. Similarly, when people want to crap on the Knicks now they go after "the Zen Master" and not Dolan. I think that is pretty important to Dolan. If Phil can avoid criticizing Dolan in the media, he's probably safe. And while Phil has a history of airing his laundry, I think he has less assertive ownership here than he did in LA and CHI. I think Dolan is kind of checked out with the band and being the CEO of like 4-5 companies.

Agree. Still dont understand why he pushed his meager chips to the table this year. If this experiment fails though (and it is way too early to tell), I think they can largely sell off the pieces for a return. Rose will expire, Melo will bring back good assets, Lee will get you something, and you may or may no be stuck with Noah.

Oh I'm with you on this, and have been defending Jax for the most part. Overall just cranky that the best we can accomplish so far is a team that has a realistic chance at the playoffs, best case top 4 team in the East, but is still nowhere near competing with the Cavs

But yes, no point in overreacting after 1 game in Cleveland, when our team hasn't all been playing together long.

The best thing Jax has accomplished so far is not only getting us out of cap hell, but setting us up with future roster flexibility by breaking the cycle of bad long term contracts to over the hill vets.

Yeah the only deal that carries weight is Noah but even he may be movable and you may not even want or need to move him. You still have KP and some younger chips and all the picks. Like Greg said if they shit the bed they can still add another lottery talent to the mix. It's not ideal but it's manageable.

C'mon, if the Knicks finish worse than the Nets this season Phil Jackson's time here goes down as a disaster. There is no scenario that the Nets should finish ahead of the Knicks. Five Thirty eight is projecting 23 wins for the Nets, ESPN has them winning 20 games. If the Knicks are worse Phil Jackson should be shown the door. I don't see a valid argument otherwise. It's not as if the "plan" this season is to tank. Noah and Lee "big" signings clearly say otherwise.

They literally had not played together AT ALL (regular season or preseason) prior to last night. I just wish the media idiots, who should know better, would recognize that. Instead, it was 99% Phil sucks, they suck, and that's the end of that.

yesterday's Derrick Rose was the exact Derrick Rose we saw all last season and basically all of the time since his injury. He can get to the hoop but lacks the explosiveness to finish, doesn't look to pass, not a good defender.

You are confusing an objective assessment of Phil's time (a disaster if NYK<BK) with my prediction of what Dolan would do. The two have nothing to do with eachother. Dolan does not run this team like a normal human being.
Not surprising that Rose wasn't any better than that...

after missing so much time in preseason. Not at all clear that it reflects a reasonable representation of his upside. It might, but there is no way to know.
