NFT: It's not just the NFL; EPL TV ratings down in Britian

JohnF : 10/25/2016 7:02 pm
From the Guardian:

Is the unthinkable happening – are people finally switching the football off?

Quote:
Early season ratings for live Premier League matches on Sky Sports are down by a fifth. On one particular Tuesday, BT Sport’s Champions League figures were down by 40%. Could the unthinkable be happening?

Could fans finally be turning off?

This has coincided with more deep-seated fears in the US, where NFL coverage, for which broadcasters and cable carriers have collectively shelled out more than $50bn for rights into the early 2020s, has suffered a double-digit decline in viewers this season.

Are people now turned off by over-saturation of sports on TV? Is having other options affecting viewership? Or is this just a blip, not a trend? Interesting article, even more so because the EPL may be mirroring what's wrong with the NFL these days!
OR maybe

they just aren't willing to slog through an insane flurry of mind-numbing commercials.
Viewing figures

I think it's over-saturation. There's only so much you can watch. With so much being shown you also get some fairly uninteresting televised games. Middlesbrough Vs Watford and Southampton Vs Burnley were the Sunday matches the other week and neither of those were exactly must watch.
I have to believe that
JerryNYG : 10/25/2016 7:10 pm : link
declining quality of product, increasing advertisement time, increasing cost of cable, and the multitude of other entertainment options are among the confluence of factors that are driving ratings down.

Cable tv is a platform/business model that is in the process of being supplanted by atreaming platforms, especially among younger generations who may not have formed the "lufe long fan" habit yet.
*Streaming *life
JerryNYG : 10/25/2016 7:15 pm : link
By the way, if not for the restrictive black out rulea I would certainly pay for MLB and NFL streaming packages. But, being unable to get in market games (even when they dont always make it on tv where I live) makes it not worth the purchase.
Cost may be a big factor here
JohnF : 10/25/2016 7:18 pm : link
I'd love for our BBI members over the pond to comment on that. As much as we love sports, it's getting expensive to attend games or watch on Cable/Stream.

Some of it may be lost viewership at home because viewers are going to Pubs or get together to watch as a group at one house. It makes sense to spend the money you would have spent on watching at home on Beer/Food (with the large screen in the background).

That expansion doesn't really apply to the EPL, where the only commercial interruption to the game is halftime (one of many reasons soccer is the best sport on the planet).

I think it's a combination of two things:

1. Saturation
2. Antiquated methodology in measuring viewership

The Champions league is easy

Man U and Chelsea have huge fan bases and instead of them or Liverpool you get Leicester and Tottenham in the UCL. Those giant fan bases aren't tuning in, it shouldn't be a big guessing game for those.

The cost of watching the EPL is definitely a problem, but the TV companies have paid such ridiculous amounts for the rights it's inevitable that this gets pushed down to the fans. Adevertising can only bring in so much and thankfully the nature of soccer means that NFL style adverts every 30 seconds isn't posisible.
A Sky TV package with films and sport is going to set you back around £70 per month (~$100 using a typical exchange rate) and then you have BT Sport asking for more money to see their selection of matches.
Quite a lot of people get BT Sport free as it's included as part of their broadband deals, some of their viewership figures have been very low though, especially for the Champions League.
Maybe they're finally realizing that soccer sucks

Can't speak for what's going on in England
moespree : 10/25/2016 8:26 pm : link
But watching the EPL here in America, I've been looking more forward to some of those matches than NFL games in recent times. The NFL has bored the living shit out of me the last 12 months. I can barely get through Giants game half the time let alone any other team.

Applies to me as well. On Sundays obviously I watch the Giants, but I'll watch EPL and Bundesliga over any other NFL games.
Would love to know the young male demos stats (NFL and epl)

I think TV is going out of style

Pretty soon, people will stop buying new sets, and will be spending all day outdoors, socializing with their fellow humans.
Could it also
dank41 : 10/26/2016 7:05 am : link
be from cord cutting? I know plenty of people who just stream games. Maybe with that being a factor, it's harder to calculate real ratings. The major barometers may be decreasing but is viewership down that much?
It's all about Brexit

Less ratings and revenues means less bullshit.
