Early season ratings for live Premier League matches on Sky Sports are down by a fifth. On one particular Tuesday, BT Sport’s Champions League figures were down by 40%. Could the unthinkable be happening? Could fans finally be turning off? This has coincided with more deep-seated fears in the US, where NFL coverage, for which broadcasters and cable carriers have collectively shelled out more than $50bn for rights into the early 2020s, has suffered a double-digit decline in viewers this season. |
Cable tv is a platform/business model that is in the process of being supplanted by atreaming platforms, especially among younger generations who may not have formed the "lufe long fan" habit yet.
Some of it may be lost viewership at home because viewers are going to Pubs or get together to watch as a group at one house. It makes sense to spend the money you would have spent on watching at home on Beer/Food (with the large screen in the background).
That expansion doesn't really apply to the EPL, where the only commercial interruption to the game is halftime (one of many reasons soccer is the best sport on the planet).
I think it's a combination of two things:
1. Saturation
2. Antiquated methodology in measuring viewership
very good point.

I'd love for our BBI members over the pond to comment on that. As much as we love sports, it's getting expensive to attend games or watch on Cable/Stream.
The cost of watching the EPL is definitely a problem, but the TV companies have paid such ridiculous amounts for the rights it's inevitable that this gets pushed down to the fans. Adevertising can only bring in so much and thankfully the nature of soccer means that NFL style adverts every 30 seconds isn't posisible.
A Sky TV package with films and sport is going to set you back around £70 per month (~$100 using a typical exchange rate) and then you have BT Sport asking for more money to see their selection of matches.
Quite a lot of people get BT Sport free as it's included as part of their broadband deals, some of their viewership figures have been very low though, especially for the Champions League.
Says a guy who watches the NB-fucking-A.
Applies to me as well. On Sundays obviously I watch the Giants, but I'll watch EPL and Bundesliga over any other NFL games.
