Eli Manning: second in NFL in YAC

bignygfan : 10/25/2016 9:16 pm
One positive for our O is that Eli has a career-high completion percentage and that you can see our playmakers are accounting for the vast amount of our yardage; Eli is second in YAC after Matt Ryan.

All we need to do is somehow get a little bit going on the ground and our playmakers will get even more YAC in our pass game and maybe our O could actually be up to snuff. We know Eli can do it and he has solid targets so it can happen. I think we will see some changes after this two-week stretch with the self-scout to get it going and hopefully play cleaner football.

one game
How many catches does Eli have?
Cruzin : 10/25/2016 9:26 pm : link

I haven't seen that many to rank second in yards after catch.

If you mean YAC for the player catching Eli's passes that's pretty meaningless as someone like Ryan would be racking up yardage from Freeman and Coleman as RBs usually dominate YAC stats.

Eli throws to OBJ, OBJ runs wild, there's your YAC.

That stat
hassan : 10/25/2016 9:30 pm : link
Becomes much more meaningful if we looked at obj yac vs everyone else.

christian : 10/25/2016 9:51 pm : link
OBJ has the two huge plays, but those aren't outliers, those are like the whole point of the offense.

If we were running the ball better, Shep and Cruz would have better numbers too. How many slants have you seen Shep absolutely get crushed on by the backside safety?

Bobby Rainey also has really good YAC numbers for the number of targets he's got.
I'll keep saying it
djm : 10/25/2016 10:03 pm : link
Eliminate many of the turnovers and this offense will be fine. Not great but workable. The offensive talent is better than people think. The WRs are very good and in this league very good WRs go a long way.

Just cut the turnovers down from 3 to 1 per game and good things should happen. Please no more 3 turnover games can't take it anymore.

Basically OBJ and one play from Cruz.
I mean, that is about the most useless thing
allstarjim : 10/25/2016 11:21 pm : link
I've ever read.

Only 9 teams have scored fewer points than the Giants... and 4 of them have played 1 fewer game than the Giants. With 9 teams having had their bye already, that means 5 of them have outscored the Giants despite playing 1 fewer game.

That doesn't even factor in that 14 points were scored by our defense. Half the league doesn't have a defensive TD.

There is no silver lining. The Giants' offense is a complete mess right now... they are pathetic. And you can try to put lipstick on a pig by cherry picking stats, but the fact remains that without OBJ, this team would struggle to score ANY points on offense. They stink out loud.

Also the Screen Pass to Perkins
OntheRoad : 10/26/2016 2:13 am : link
from a couple of weeks ago. I believe that was over 60 YAC.
You guys are freakin' amazing...
Fred-in-Florida : 10/26/2016 5:47 am : link
Right... take away the game OBJ had against the Ravens. And the couple a runs after the catch by Cruz. Also Rainey and Perkins. Because those stats don't count!

If you take away all those one yard runs, we'd be in the top 10 in yards per rush! Just sayin'!
The Giants offense has been pretty futile
joeinpa : 10/26/2016 5:52 am : link
In more games than not. They don t pass the eye test, Second in YAC does not change that.
When your defense just has a turnover,
Doomster : 10/26/2016 6:29 am : link
and hands the ball to the offense with 4 minutes left, in a one score game, and the offense goes 3 and out....'Nuff said...

hassan : 10/26/2016 7:19 am : link
Giants have tons of pass attempts. What is the yac per pass attempt? More meaningful stat.

I was thinking the same thing. Too funny. Hand-wringing whiners.
Career best pass completion percentage....
chilly460 : 10/26/2016 7:41 am : link
And he's still 18th or so in the league. Have to look at it across the league, everyone is up, so taken relatively it's not really anything to tout as encouraging
So now we're cherry-picking YAC plays for Eli?
Big Blue '56 : 10/26/2016 7:59 am : link
Tom Brady has made a living out of YAC guys..So did Montana..It's like Zeke Elliott gained 120 yards, BUT 65 came on one breakaway..You accept it for what it is, FOOTBALL..It happens every game, every season to everyone..
Time for more rule changes
Giants2012 : 10/26/2016 7:59 am : link
Has the defense somehow caught up to the offense this year? Some wild 4th Qtr finishes yet is offense down or am i just watching more games lower scoring?

Then again, maybe I'm just watching mediocre offense.

When stats are clearly discordant with evidence.....
WideRight : 10/26/2016 8:06 am : link
go with what you see:

OBJ is a great playmaker

Eli remains less accurate than the best QBs, and that translates into less YAC, all else being the same.

That passes the eyeball test

hassan : 10/26/2016 8:30 am : link
It's beyond that. Giants attempt a lot of passing. So overall numbers will look good. But what is the per pass play rank?

Giants don't have great td pct or ypa or yac per pass attempt. That tells the real story

hassan : 10/26/2016 8:35 am : link
Our yac story is built on obj and lots of attempts. What do the other players look like?

I'm guessing it shows pedestrian yac. The point is we have a league leader in yac on the team. He is lifting Eli in this example.

Sure everyone can pick examples of qb helped by a player. I'd suggest the post is misleading for reasons already pointed out.
If our running game is going
hassan : 10/26/2016 9:07 am : link
Our yac overall will go down. Our passing efficiency however will go up. My take on this.
I love the
Beezer : 10/26/2016 9:10 am : link

"meaningless stat" guys.

Uh, meaningless, as in they probably solely account for 2 of our wins?

Right.
Beezer
hassan : 10/26/2016 9:16 am : link
Being second in yac overall does not say a lot in regards to Eli's performance this year. For reasons already mentioned.
hassan, or maybe it does?
Beezer : 10/26/2016 9:23 am : link

Consider when he checks out of the play that was called from behind the Big Sideline Menu.

If we can agree that he's among the league's best in recognizing things at the LOS and changing out of what was initially called, then we also would probably agree that the point if those changes would be to put his WRs and others who'd catch the football in a better position to have favorable matchups that might lead to ... bigger YAC.

I'm not saying it's the way each and every time. But it's probably not a coincidence.

Simple math.
what we really need is to focus on this stat
mdc1 : 10/26/2016 9:33 am : link
YPC...Yards per catch...a big decider of games
as it is a measure that you are beating other defenses. Another good one is PPC, points per completion or something like that. After all the final score is the ultimate measure of success?

Summary...throw the ball downfield consistently and accurately.
Sure
hassan : 10/26/2016 9:39 am : link
But while that's decent conjecture it's still conjecture.

Eli has 2nd place in yac list with 10th most attempts per game. That suggests this offense is still better than average at this. With Odell and Victor on the team it should be the case.
Mdc
hassan : 10/26/2016 9:41 am : link
Ypa is a better indication of pass success.n Giants are average here and worst at running in league. Explains a lot of this offenses scoring issues.
Why do you need stats to explain something
WideRight : 10/26/2016 10:24 am : link
that's pretty obvious?

Eli has done great things for this organization, and hopefully there's more in store, but stop pretending he's something he's not. He's a great read and react QB who can use the whole field. He is not a mobile guy who runs an accurate short game ala the original WC offenses. If you ask him do stuff that is outside his comfort zone bad things will happen.
Wide right
hassan : 10/26/2016 10:35 am : link
I agree with your premise. Mcadoo should stop forcing this bad fit and let him play more to his strengths.
Eli Play to his strengths ...
Bluesbreaker : 10/26/2016 12:45 pm : link
He is a Great QB that just like any other QB with the
exception of Rodgers Breese and Brady . That he needs
a semblance of a Run Game he is very good with affective
play action pass . He is Very Good with Mid-Deep throws .
He is not mobile but he knows how to work the pocket
and protect himself when there is a said pocket to work
from .. He is not the best short to mid-range passer he
struggles with short passes and screen passes . He is not
the best ball handler he is almost robotic on hand off's
he rarely fools anyone with ball handling skills .
So he must have a run game that at the very least garners
some respect . He needs a safety blanket from a TE or a
bigger bodied WR . He needs to be confident under center
that he can take the snap and make the proper drop
so his mechanics are not rushed and he has the confidence
that his blind side is protected and he trusts that its
protected .
Situation
Jim in Fairfax : 10/26/2016 3:45 pm : link
No running game.

No tight end.

OL is fair at pass protection, but can't trust them to provide the kind of time needed to run an offense based on a vertical passing game.

Am I missing something? What more should we expect Eli to get out the tools provided?

hassan : 10/26/2016 4:32 pm : link
This personnel is not very different from last year and has improved a bunch at wr. Defenses have adjusted but our o can adjust as well. I trust that Giants will employ new wrinkles to help get vertical and help create open men to exploit cover two.
