Cavs: 117
NYK : 88
Well, for game 1 for his new "super team", it wasn't pretty. Sloppy, mistakes, turnovers, etc. With it only being the first game against the defending champions, the Knicks biggest problem right now is going to be their bench.
The triangle is obviously still painful to watch while the players try to learn how to run it as a new team. Jennings is going to be the most loved or frustrating player you watch depending on what night you tune in.
Couple of stats:
The Knicks has 26 plays that started and finished the possession without making a pass.
Starting SG, Courtney Lee went 0-5. Ouch
Porzingis led the team with 33 minutes played.
Knicks had 18 turnovers, when watching the game, it seemed like they had 18 in the first half.
Has Courtney Lee played in the NBA before? You wouldn't think so watching him last night.
Three things I want to see next game.
1. Defensive rebounding
2. Crisp passing
3. Limit turn overs

melo was far from the problem, he had 19 points 50% shooting and 3 assists..
how many shots do you think he took in the 2nd half?
Melo is going to have his spots to iso but the ball needs to be in roses hands running pick and roll...
when they went to the pick and roll with shooters spreading the floor they went on that big run in the 2nd..there is enough shooting in the starting lineup to spread the floor..
the kp or melo with rose pick and pop should be a staple of this offense
they need to learn how to play off of each other rather than taking turns
it is 1 game, and they havnt had a month together, they had 3 days...
look at the warriors last night...
there is not 1 way to build a team, not every team tanks and then becomes a championship team...
its not always accumilating high picks that leads to a championship roster..
You know, I'm sure all fan bases have shitty fans, but NY has to be one of the worst. If I were a pro athlete, the last place I'd want to play is in NY. And to be honest, I'd bet most athletes feel that way.
pretty much all of it...
they are not an old team by any stretch of the imagination...
their 3 oldest players are lee, melo and noah ..
the rest of the team is all under 28...
i am going to bet rose and jennings are both resigned barring injury or just horrible play...
if this team makes the playoffs, they are going to resign rose and jennings, there wont be enough cap space to replace them with anything worthwhile..
young developmental players, you obviously have kp, then willy and kuzminskaus both signed for 3 years...
plumlee and baker are end of the bench guys but young..
lance and oquinn both young and both signed for the next 3 years...
this team is pretty much set for the next couple of years
I think that plan was in large part due to the absence of a first round pick.
The Cavaliers are going to be tough, of course, and they have the best player in thew world, plus a handful of other really good ones who are feeling pretty good right about now.
But for the Knicks, I saw a few good things.
We should be a bit on the patient side if we believe (a) Hornacek knows what he's doing (and I do), and (b) the roster was massively upgraded (and it was).
Chemistry takes a littlew while to develop, and last night was the first time these guys have played together (starting crew), and all-in-all, I didn't think they looked bad at all.
The run before the half was also pretty good and showed some things to come.
On the flip side - if KOQ takes another fucking 3-pointer, I may need a new television.
but then he has games where he wants to stand on perimeter and take jump shots..

That drive to the lane by Jennings and kick out to O'Quinn for the 3 was worthy of a WTF chuckle.
stop taking shots when he have more open guys, your job is to play defense and be a glue guy, not score 15 points
Generally speaking, bigs dont sell shoes. From Yahoo:
That's a sentiment and strategy shared across the industry, as brands, much like teams, are going smaller and looking for the fastest and most electric players who often have the ball in their hands at the game's biggest moments.

You guys realize that every team lets its star player take the ball and try and score buckets on his own, right? Oh wait, no that's just Melo. Only Melo tries to score one on one...give it a rest already.

people do nkt even realize the cavs offense is all iso, it juat depends whether kyrie has the ball or lebron has the ball and the other players jjst spread out

Cut them some slack. Most of these guys are the fatty that no one ever passed to in gym class. They're the guy that stood there in their way too small gym shorts, wide open under the basket, waiving their arms frantically but they still couldn't convince anyone on the team to throw them the ball. So they hold a grudge and have meltdowns when they see a player so it on TV. Flashbacks.
KG and CW never moved shoes like the guards did. I dont think they had 8 figure shoe deals. KG bounced around from shoe maker to shoe maker (at least 4 during his career) -- not a sign of a guy getting bank on shoes. When KG moved to adidas in 2003, they paid him $2 million per, when he was a top 5 player in the game. Same year LeBron got 90/7 before he stepped foot on a court. Because he plays a "small" game.

he was the best offensive player on the Knicks again last night --shot 50% from the field, but yup, lets all kill Melo for "ball hogging"

It's a follow the herd mentality. Someone says Melo ball hogs and the fans WANT to believe it because many Knicks fans want to hate Melo. Fans like to hate if the team struggles. Shit even if the team wins, fans want to find something they perceive to be wrong that they can attack. Melo runs ISO, the Knicks lose, it's Melo's fault pass the ball, Melo.
Also, it's next to impossible to execute an efficient and consistent swing the ball offense because....wait for it, the opposition PLAYS DEFENSE.
If teams could move the ball or swing the ball and play perfectly clean motion offense all night long, they would except it's not really possible. The NBA game is predicated on energy. Players expand energy more than any other sport. As the energy levels ebb and flow on both teams, so goes the game flow. Fans never get this. It's not easy to just run up and down the court every series and expand 100% energy for 24 seconds over and over and over. Guys break down. That's why teams have to incorporate iso ball and half court offense.
He has a mega deal (30 million per). I realize KP will NEVER be Kevin Durant as a player or as marketable but
"The contract reportedly is worth between $3 million and $6 million annually, a figure Nike, Porzingis’ previous shoe company, would have to match by mid-October. Nike is not expected to match the terms, according to the report."
Just struck me as a low number to decline to match. Like I said not a big deal.

Unless of course you're a high motor white guy.
I always believed that D'Antoni's teams didn't play D because the style they played simply didn't allow it. Look at all the memorable teams over the last 30 years. They great offensive teams rarely posted great DEF team stats and the reverse also holds true. The 90s Bulls teams played legendary D. Their team offensive stats were average. Can't really do both. Sorry for the rant drank too much coffee.

Of course...there's always the exception.
Noah: Amazing how a reasonably coordinated/athletic guy can have zero shooting/finishing skills. Let's hope he has more to offer than last night.
Hernangomez: Was a mess last night (nervous?), but I believe in him.
PF:
KP: Not the best opener from him last night but love the guy.
KOQ: This thread is right on the $.
SF: One of the amazing things about Lebron is not only his great willingness to pass but the following as well: accuracy (guy can catch and shoot in rhythm), pace (he flicks his wrist with cross court passes with velocity and makes the D unbalanced. I don't put last night's loss on Melo, but I'm always jealous of teams w/ athletic SFs and facilitating SFs (Lebron being the best all time in both categories).
Thomas: Brutal, but he's better than that.
Kooz: Gotta find minutes for him. Smooth player.
SG: Lee is a good 3/D player who was terrible last night.
Sasha and Baker and Holiday are not NBA caliber players.
PG: Rose can still drive a handful of times a game. But he doesn't create for others, nor can he shoot or defend.
Jennings: Reminds me of a Sebastian Telfair kind of player meaning despite being quick, he can't get to the rim, he can't shoot. So youre left with a flashy pass first PG who makes you cringe when he shoots.
How many Porzingis shoes do you think will sell? Melo's Nike shoes sold $30 million in 2014, and he gets paid $4 million by Nike.
This is a ton on money for a guy with a bunch of marketing questions marks over him -- unproven, 7'3, white European, has 2 bigger names on his team.

Melo will get his points he just has to trust the system like he did last year.
he has to learn players spots and the cohesion is not there yet...
the hardest position to play when your learning to play with others is point guard because you have to know where everyone likes to be...its not as easy as ok hit the open man..
and remember to he is trying to mold his game with melo, he is used to always having the ball and always be option 1 now he is sharing that mantle and it is a big adjustment...
he can dish and be that type of point guard you just have to give him time, coming out of high school and even college he was known as a pass first player then he went to chicago and had to score
Again, didn't watch anything except highlights but from a simple look at the box score it looked like absolutely nobody outside the "Big 3" gave anything at all. Seems like the Cavs taking care of business more than anything else.
Grizzlies at home with no Chandler Parsons. Troy Wiliams or James Ennis will be starting. I'd like to see Melo facilitate the offense when the best player in the league isn't hounding him.
rose and melo were the reason the game was close at the half...
he missed a couple easy ones whoch he admitted he was rusty and got to far under the rim...
anyone watching that game and says rose lacked ezplosiveness really was not paying attention, there was a couple of times he blew right by irving and fonished with contact
sahing rose cant pass off of one game is just stupid, it takes time for a point guard to get used to the players around him and finding the open man..
when a player is not comfortable yet in his offense he relies on what he knows best and that is attacking...
to say rose did not show signs of playing better last year is a flat out lie
The shot distribution was more or less exactly what you would want.
KP took the third most shots on the team. He was just absent on offense. 5-13 shooting and 3-6 from the free throw line.
He got his touches. No point force feeding the cold hand.
