trade IMO was that people (not sure who, fans, twitter, beat writers) were leaking potential trade returns or offers that sounded unrealistic.
so when the did trade him it seemed like a letdown.
In the past 20 years the Canadiens traded Roy, Theodore, Thibault, Halak, Budaj, Huet, Tokarski, and so many more - no one trades goalies like the Canadiens you just don't get what you think you will for goalies. Especially mostly unproven or to that point predominantly backup goalies.
Well of course Hagelin (and Stralman) were underrated
by the entire league. The best GMs - e.g., Theo Epstein - are ahead of the curve in their decisions.
Dont get me wrong, I love Gorton's past offseason, so hopefully we don't fuck up like this going forward because realistically if we want Hank to get one we cannot afford to.
But it is sad when most of BBI knew right away how bad these two decisions were. That's the frustrating part... along with Anaheim dumping him for peanuts 3 months later.

Gorton looked and sounded really disappointed on draft day last year, so i think there was some substance to it. Sharks and Sabres were both believed to be very interested and both traded firsts for their guys -- particularly Buffalo, i have a hard time believing any front office valued Lehner higher than Cam.
GoldenTee loves the Patriots and Celtics as well as the Penguins. Color me shocked.
Not like that....I'm not of fan of those two...I'm happy if they win...but there not my teams.
Everybody usually has some group of teams they like but don't love/live and die with and some they hate.

Rick Carpinello got laid off at the journal news. Too bad, his game recaps were always must reads for me the day after. Rangers Report - ( New Window )
the single biggest anchor around their necks is exactly what many of
us said it would be at the time - signing both Staal and Girardi to big money contracts. Staal now plays at the level of a 3rd pairing defenseman and Girardi is one of the very worst defensemen in hockey, but together they eat up 15% of the team's cap.

I'm not saying there wasn't demand for Talbot, I'm just saying the potential returns leaked were possibly exaggerated setting fans up to be disappointed - I think the return for Talbot was about right.
Talbot was pretty much a known commodity. Lehner still isn't as old as Talbot when Talbot made his NHL debut and Lehner has been in the league 7 years, he (Lehner) has been the "next big goalie" for a long time. Never panned out.
I think he was still thought of as having a higher ceiling than Talbot, but also a lower floor.

Not the biggest fan of Carp, but depressing to see a lot of good guys get laid off.
I think the bloggers do some great work across the league. I read BSB over Brooks most of the time, for example.
I actually read the Cyrgalis puff piece on Holden that Brett mentioned earlier. Dear. God. I didn't think my opinion of Vigneault could sink lower, but this will do it:
Quote:
It was funny, we were coming back from Buffalo, I got a call as I got off the plane in Ottawa from Patrick Roy saying to me, You just got one of my better defensemen, Vigneault remembered
A)Awesome, one of the better defensemen from an awful defense!
B)Vigneault is going with Patrick Roy's ace scouting reports now. How wonderful.
Quote:
I talked to [Roy] about it at that time, How do you see him? Vigneault said. He told us he could be anywhere from a fourth to a sixth defenseman on a good team
And that explains why he's playing....um....on the top pair?
Quote:
Although much of the talk has been about how fast and offensively explosive they have looked thus far, the fact they are stout in their own end again is equally encouraging and that is due in part to the steadiness of Holden.
Yep, that's what they've been - stout in their own end!
"might be more than day-to-day." has an eerie, Mets medical staff connotation to it.
Dont over read it. AV said this about Girardi, who missed 3 games (tonight will be game 2 for CK):
Quote:
"He's got a hip-flexor. We will know the severity tomorrow. At this time I would say that he is a little bit more than day to day."
I think "more than day to day" is AV's coach speak for guys who arent hurt long term but are off the coach's radar because they're definitely missing the next game. "Day to day" would be guys who might suit up tomorrow/next game.

Unbelievable they signed Girardi and Staal to these albatross contracts and then let Stralman sign with TB for way less.
And as fate would have it, TB beats us in the finals, with Stralman moving the puck like a dream. Also, if you keep Stralman, the Yandle deal likely never happens and Rangers still have the Duke.
pointless in 6 games. His 20 goals from last season are almost certainly a bit of a mirage, since his 19% shooting percentage is such an outlier. Let's be generous and say he'd be a 13 percent shooter (ie. higher than wings Kane and Ovie). His goal output falls to 14 in 81 games; Hagelin's rookie year pace was almost 18 had he played 81 games.
Just sayin'. The legend of Duclair is getting away from itself. Reminds me of the time a rookie Prucha score 30, on 23.1% shooting.
he's killing it right now. These spasms that players have gotten keep allowing the team to keep too many players. I don't doubt that that Buchnevich, Kreider and Klein have had some discomfort. I just don't quite believe it's REALLY bad enough that they would have had to miss multiple games and go on IR. Just a convenient injury is all...
If everyone is healthy enough to play what's your move? Send Skjei to Hartford? Put Jooris on waivers and either lose him to another team or he decides to take that offer in Switzerland? Waive McIlrath and lose him for nothing?
I just think Gorton is legitimately looking to make a trade that will fix the 24 man roster issue and prevent us from having to lose a player for nothing.
I think he's terribly replacable. I think they will do that, or waive/trade McIlrath. Indeed, if we had more flexibility, I think AV would prefer having Boo up over Jooris.
Im not convinced Jooris is materially better than Hrivik, Jensen, Nieves, or Fontaine. Jooris seems to define "marginal roster player", and given our lack of recallable depth, it seems obvious that you risk losing him vs. McIlrath. Even though carrying 8 D's is weird. It's a little odd to me that the only NHL experience we have on D in Hartford is Chris Summers.
2 assists in 6 games with no PP time. 2nd on team in hits (Kreider). 51.4 CF% 52 FF% (both 3rd among Ds after Clendo and McD). 50/50 zone starts.
Rangers came into the season as a bubble playoff team. Even if we're better than that, every seed counts. Im not demoting Skjei to protect the likes of Josh Jooris as a 14th forward.
I'm referring to a situation where they're pretty far along in talks and just not quite there. IF there's a trade happening, there's a pretty good chance jooris would be your 12th forward after the trade, in which case you don't want to lose him while the plane is on the runway.
But, I'm less hawkish on trading any of the forwards for D than most seem to be, so Skjei should stay up and play if I had my druthers.
We would have to trade 2 forwards to make Jooris #12
Watching some of the Isles game against Montreal, pretty funny how they get to face Montoya tonight instead of the perfectly healthy Carey Price. Must be nice.

He's not Price, but Montoya has been fantastic this year. I was against the signing when I learned about it, but he's the best backup I've seen in MTL in a long long time.
If fucking Holden doesn't hit the press box after tonight, my head in going to explode. If that had been McIlrath, he'd be out of ths lineup for six weeks.
I give up. I wanted to believe AV learned something this past offseason, but apparently dominating the first couple of games possession and shot wise wasnt challenging enough for coach.
"Rover," who seemed ok for a bit or at least didn't trip my radar let it slip on some thread something about attendance comparisons. And I thought no way... this can't be him. Then he did it again. The fucker just can't resist. Weirdo festish for attendance numbers and a desire to root for multiple teams in the same division.
so when the did trade him it seemed like a letdown.

Kreider was having an MVP type season before the injury. You dont take him out of the lineup to showcase Josh Jooris.

Deej - I agree. I know it's early but I don't think you would bench Kreider under any circumstances to showcase in a trade.
A trade or someone of minor significance would likely be lost to waivers soon.

Get rid of McIlrath and Jooris, but have Glass around?
That's like banning Randy and Milton but keeping Rover around.
And I like Skjei a lot. Fingers crossed they don't ship him off in a scramble for RD.

It's all good though, Patrick Roy vouched for his abilities
Fuckin Pierre. What a creep.
The touch wasn't the problem, the fact that he collapsed the middle on the guy already covered and left Czarniak wide open was the problem.

Yeah, I'm just mocking AV for his reason to bench Clendening.
As Nick Holden gets PP time, let's remember that Keith Yandle did not get on the first PP unit last year until January.
