He has been a beast this season. He does it all hard hits, int's. Thank you Jerry for out bidding who ever it was that also tried to move up to get him last year.
Right now I see no reason why he shouldn't be in the top 5 in defensive player of the year. No one is having the type of year that is running away with it, maybe Von Miller is a slight front runner but he's not having some amazing season... Collins coming off back to back player of the week games, and then he follows that up with a big night on nat'l TV to raise his profile even more. Pro bowl looks like a lock right now
In two consecutive seasons we drafted on of the top receivers in the game and then a guy who's showing he may be one of the top safeties in the game. I don't think we'll have any stars in this years draft, but there are a number of rookies who are contributing.
Let me be clear that I'm not putting Collins on these guys level
But one of my favorite things in football has always been a atching the safety that wreaks havoc... Polamalu, Reed, Dawkins etc flying around and making plays always made me envious with our historically average situation at safety. To have our very own guy back there coming of age and looking like a possible future pro bowl fixture is like a dream come true. He may be playing the best safety in football right now.
Stevie Brown sucked, but because had had a bunch of picks many here were lauding him as the answer at FS. Collins had a solid rookie year, played every game and was asked to play different roles every week and people were crucifying him as a wasted pick, especially after the NE game when he misplayed a possible pick..
He was stellar from the 1st snap this year. I'm glad he's finally getting the recognition. The guy is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.
What safety out there is playing better than Landon Collins?
I don't know if they've been 'better', but there are some other good safeties having strong seasons like Earl Thomas (2 INTs, 8 PDs), Weddle (2 INT, 7 PD, 1 FF), and Berry (2 INT, 7 PD, 1 TD) to name a few.
I'd put Keanu Neal and TJ Ward ahead of Weddle thus far
Collins is the best so far though. There were splotches of talent last year ( as long as he didn't have to cover anybody) but moving him back to his original position has brought the best out in him.
not sure how it's relevant to the thread. you should start a thread that says "I just hope Landon Collins makes the playoffs". The two concepts are not mutually exclusive.
and All Pro. I honestly think he has to start being seriously considered for DPOY. Will have well over 100 tackles, already has 4 INTs, and 2 sacks all from the S position. He is turning himself into an elite safety in just his second year. Teams have to start accounting for him on the field.
RE: amazing what a few INTs can do for a guy's rep.

I agree and I for one never blasted him last year. I thought, overall, he had a good rookie season and recognized he was out of position. Also, I never blamed him for the NE loss like many did. That would have been an absolute amazing play if he held on to that INT. It wasn't a gimme he dropped.

It's 9 games, WTF?
WTF what? He hasn't established himself as one of the top 5 S in the league this year? He isn't playing at an extremely high level? He isn't, by far, the best player on an improved defense?
I thought Giants defensive players weren't allowed in Pro Bowls

Sure, it's 9 games. But, we have to judge him in comparison to other players in those 9 games in terms of awards, etc. This is November, when people start talking about post season, awards, etc. Right now, he is playing at a level worthy of All Pro consideration and, I think, DPOY. Is he going to win DPOY? Probably not. But, he has to be in the mix, in my opinion.
the strides he's made in coverage are very impressive
I thought he showed promise last year, but I believed in the idea that he was going to be a run-thumping quasi-LB who would need a FS partner who was good in coverage to make up for his pass defense struggles. That hasn't been the case.
with the superlatives or definitives because you don't make the all-pro roster or name a DPOY after 9 games.
A lot of football left.
Of course. But, this is what fans do. They discuss the games, the season, etc. It is the same reason we are starting to look at potential scenarios to make the playoffs. Are you saying that, now into the second half of the season, he hasn't played at an All Pro level? He has played so well, that even playing just above average the rest of the way he should make the Pro Bowl.

I don't think he's 'by far' the best player on this D. JPP, Vernon, and Jenkins have all played at an extremely high level this year too.
Hell, Jenkins just shut down AJ Green.

I think it is "by far". He is all over the field every week for 9 weeks now. Those guys are playing very well, but I think he is on another level this season.
was on the use of "not should" but "will" make the pro-bowl an be all-pro.
It's beyond premature to name your all-pro team, pro-bowl roster and DPOY.
just the way I view it, if you want to crown him on November 15, go right ahead.
Forgetting there are still 7 games left, I mentioned before a lot of these accolades are popularity contests, so while today, he's probably playing like one of the best safeties in the game, who knows what the next 7 games have in store and who knows how the voters vote.
Earl Thomas has gone the past 5 years. Eric Berry, Harrison Smith, Malcolm Jenkins, Tyrann Mathieu and others have more name recognition and they don't split out conference anymore or SS/FS so who knows how the voting will look.
If his final 7 games are as good as the first 9 sure he "should" get some accolades, but anyone saying he "will" is going beyond out on a limb on November 15 - which is your right.
I think they vote on the pro bowl after 13 games, so there are only 4 more games to go for that. More than 2/3 of the resume' you will write for a pro bowl berth has been authored... it's still early for dpoy and all pro, but I don't think it's unreasonable to speculate that he is at least in the discussion for both past the halfway point. I think that's noteworthy in and of itself. If not noteworthy, certainly exciting

discussion yes, "will" I'm not ready for that yet. But don't mean to seem like a dick, I know how these things go. There are snubs every year and it's usually the rookies or young players not everyone nationally knows about. Pro-bowl is even worse since the fan vote is a big part. My guess is most non-Giants fans don't know how good Collins is playing.

I would say Collins at this point,
likely a top 5 defensive player.
Berry is a FA, wouldn't mind the Giants going after him
in the offseason to pair with Collins.
Let's get a legit FS here.
"I would replace Collins with Hall in a NY minute."
I won't call out who said that, but that was just a few months ago on BBI. Glad that Collins has leveled up. Sometimes it actually does take more than one year for a player to get going.
He was stellar from the 1st snap this year. I'm glad he's finally getting the recognition. The guy is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.

Most of it is popularity contests, hard for someone like Collins to wrestle the award away from Earl Thomas or Tyrann Mathieu.
He probably isn't, I'm just saying most people vote on reputation. Earl Thomas has been to the pro-bowl the past 5 years.
and has been a 1st team all-pro 4 of them (Mathieu and Berry were last year ahead of Thomas since they don't separate SS from FS).

He has 3 sacks! :)
Also (IIRC) 7 passes defensed.

that's my point.
and don't forget, the second coming of Ronnie Lott.
