A quick review of the Oline and the final play

cnewk : 11/15/2016 3:06 pm
I saw BBB’s post on the last big gain by Jennings where Gettis had a key block. I was going to post this there, but that thread seems to have gotten a bit derailed.

First, here is an overview of what I saw from the offensive line. First, Jones only played the first series (8 plays) before leaving with a calf injury. In his short time in there he played very well. It’s too bad he left with an injury, and hopefully it is not serious. Newhouse came in at LG and played a pretty solid game. Honestly he might have played better at guard than he has at tackle. He obviously wasn’t perfect, but he was solid. Newhouse also played TE some (4 snaps from what I could tell). When Newhouse moved to TE, Gettis came in to play LG. It seemed like the Giants then would leave Gettis in for the next play as well, and then Newhouse would sub back in. So, I counted 7 plays at LG for Gettis (only where Newhouse was out). I could have missed some, but I doubt many, since Gettis is pretty easy to spot with that hair sticking out of his helmet.

I thought Richburg actually had one of his better games for this year. He had one glaring missed block in the run game, but other than that looked good. In pass protection he had a few plays that you would like to have back mainly in the second quarter, but settle down and had a solid game in pass protection. The pass protection over all was generally pretty good. Jerry struggled a bit more than normal, but still awful. Hart had another solid game, and I think he is really starting to develop into a solid starter at RT. Last year, if I remember correctly, he struggled more at guard than at tackle. Hopefully they are able to leave him at RT even with these injuries. Both Flowers and Jerry were not very good in the run game for overall. Newhouse played TE on 4 plays, but he didn’t look particularly good in those 4 plays. He did a lot better in the Eagles game at TE.

So that is my general overview of what I saw on the offensive line. I’ll make second post that has my review of the last meaningful play of the game. My view differs a little from what I saw in the other thread. It’s hard to see all of what’s going on from the TV angle, so I could be mistaken on some things.
This was the play that sealed the game for the Giants
cnewk : 11/15/2016 3:06 pm : link
The first screen shot diagrams out how (I think) the play is designed to be run. Hart is blocking DE Dunlap and Richburg is blocking DT Peko. Gettis and Flowers are to double team Atkins, with Gettis then moving to the second level to block Burfict. Newhouse is lined up as the TE and is set to block DE Johnson, who is lined up over top of him. Jerry is pulling and should go between Flowers and Newhouse looking for LB Rey to block. Safety Williams (white circle) is running up to the LOS at the snap and is the unaccounted for defender.

You can see in the second image that Newhouse is in the process of getting beat by Johnson (red circle). He has gotten to the inside of Newhouse and has the potential to possibly make the stop before Jennings gets past the LOS. Jerry is pulling, though and throws a powerful block on Johnson. You can see in the third image Jerry has forced Johnson back and along with Newhouse are sealing him out of the play. LB Rey was filling the hole that should have been between Newhouse and Flowers, by the time he gets there Newhouse is able to turn and block him while Jerry is blocking Johnson. It wasn’t how the play was drawn up, but Johnson and Rey are being blocked. Gettis and Flowers (green circle) do a excellent job of driving Atkins back and then sealing him to the outside. Gettis moves on to block Burfict and is able to get a little push on him that is just enough to keep him from making the tackle. Burfict still gets one arm on Jennings, but it isn’t enough to keep him from a big gain.

Hart had his man well blocked and Richburg fought hard with Peko. It looks like the Giants might have gotten a bit lucky here. It’s hard to tell from the camera angle, but it looks like Peko was in relative control of Richburg, but chose the wrong side, which allowed Jennings into the hole.

Honestly, it looks to me like Rey was a bit too aggressive in filling the hole, as he basically takes himself out of the play. Safety Williams has also charged up and taken himself out of the play. With Williams rushing up in run support before the ball was even snapped, he has the outside run covered. So, Rey didn’t need to crash the line when he saw that Johnson had gotten to Newhouse’s inside.

They had some good blocks on the play, but it was far from perfect, but it worked out perfectly against the defense the Bengals were playing. Game over.
thanks cnewk.

BTW, what changed in the 3rd quarter? After the initial drive, the Bengals Dine was blowing up the Giants Oline especially Geno Atkins on Jerry. By mid 3rd quarter it seemed the Giants were able to regain control of the line.
Eric, give this post a sticky.

That was an outstanding analysis of what looked to me like a confused mass of players falling all over themselves.
Thanks cnewk. Great stuff.

You're right - I didn't give Jerry enough credit. Newhouse had his hands full with the gang of defenders storming his area (RDE, MLB, SS). If Jerry hadn't pulled, Jennings might not have made it out of the backfield.

What's your read on where the play was supposed to go? Behind Newhouse, where Rey and Williams were attacking, or closer to where Jennings took it, with a designed cutback?
Thanks once again..

Of course last year, the play would have worked perfectly except whoever was the receiver would have dropped the ball

I'm not entirely sure. My first thought was that it was probably designed to follow Jerryin the 5 hole (between Newhouse and Flowers). But if that were the case it is more likely that Flowers and Gettis would have tried to seal Atkins to the inside with Flowers moving to the second level. Since Flowers and Gettis sealed Atkins to the outside and Gettis moved to the second level, it seems more likely that it was intended to go basically right where it went.

Another thing I noticed throughout the game was
cnewk : 11/15/2016 3:58 pm : link
that the Giants never pulled their LG. This definitely could have been a result of Jones being out, but I still found it interesting. Against the Eagles the LG pull some, but I don't think Jerry pulled at all. In this game I saw Jerry pull 9 times out of 24 runs (24 run plays includes runs negated by penalty, but not kneel downs). Jerry pulled on 1 of the 2 run plays on the first drive, where Jones was still in the game. Jerry pulled on 4 of the 5 plays on the Giants final possession.

It seems like in a lot of games one of the guards will do most or all of the pulling. Sometimes it's the left an sometimes it's the right. I'm not sure why they wouldn't mix it up more and pull both ways in a game.

Any chance you can break down the 4th down play where Eli got sacked?
Good stuff as always newk

if it is possible for Newhouse to be a Pro Bowler at LG?
You think Bobby Hart is the RT of the future? I think he is
the RT for right now.

Pro bowler at LG? No. On his bad days at RT Newhouse was a below average starter or worse. On his good days he was an average starter. Newhouse looked like an average starter to me at LG this game. That's pretty good considering he is the third option at LG.

I think Hart is the RT for the rest of this season. I think there is a decent chance he will be the starting RT next year. He is still young and needs to develop more, but it's possible he turns into the RT of the future. Toward the end of last year he was looking really bad and I was doubtful he would contribute at all this year. Sometimes players get better......sometimes they get worse. We'll see what happens.

I'm not in front of my notes and can't do a detailed review right now. But, if I remember correctly I thought the sack was on Richburg. It could have been a miscommunication with Newhouse, since I think that was the side he was beaten on. I might try to take a closer look later.

.

Question 1, was dripping with sarcasm, based on how good
I heard Newhouse was on the other thread.
I think Hart is a slight upgrade over Newhouse, that ain't
saying much.
It's hard to find an excuse for Richburg on the fourth-down sack.

Atkins was lined up on Richburg's nose, and they engaged immediately. Richburg might have expected help from Newhouse that arrived (very) late, but I don't see any way the center isn't responsible for a DT who's right over him at the snap on a pass play.
OL
Since1965 : 11/15/2016 5:00 pm : link
The OL is still a huge problem. Manning is continually unable to throw deep because the OL is rarely able to hold off the defense long enough for the Giants to run longer routes. Their offense has been relegated to having to complete three little dinks to get a first down. And that's what's so infuriating; they have wide receivers capable of big plays downfield but we rarely see it because of the OL. The inability to consistently run the ball and to pass the ball downfield makes this a painful, plodding offense that rarely quick strikes and struggles to score.

That sounds right. I knew it was one of Richburgs bad plays in pass protection. I couldn't remember if he was the only problem, or if Newhouse could have helped and deserved blame too. Atkins is very good.
Atkins pretty much dominated
Johnny5 : 11/15/2016 5:18 pm : link
Every single lineman at some point. On one play he pushed back Flowers like he was a little kid. Much respect for Atkins, that guy is an animal.
No shame in a center being overpowered by Geno Atkins.
Big Blue Blogger : 11/15/2016 5:37 pm : link
I was more annoyed by the way Richburg appeared to give up on the play at the end. For a guy known for his tenacity, WR didn't deliver much of a final shove as Atkins was blowing past him. Granted, at that point he was off-balance, on roller skates.
Newhouse would leave the field for one play after being eligible
mort christenson : 11/15/2016 11:39 pm : link
so Gettis would get two plays at OG for every time Newhouse lined up as TE.

Those are the rules. Have to leave for a play before you can go back inline.
Great post as usual

I have an NFL game pass subscription that I would be willing to let you use, cnewk. You would then get the all 22 video.

If interested let me know. Thanks for the contributions you have made to the site, I enjoy them
