Giants SS Landon Collins recorded six tackles and an interception Week 11 against the Bears. The interception was Collins' fifth in the last four games and ended the Bears' comeback attempt late in the fourth quarter. After an up-and-down rookie season, Collins is making a legitimate case for Defensive Player of the Year honors this year. Collins has three sacks to go along with his league-leading five interceptions. |
Will he win it? Probably not. But no one is playing better defensive football right now.
I'm not sure anyone else on the defensive side of the ball is playing better football right now than he is.
I found the comparison to Rolle posted last night in which the poster argued that Rolle was better, amusing: Not only is LC only in his second season, as a Giant Rolle was already in decline. Loved him for his presence in his first couple of years, but his angles on receivers and runners were often head-scratching. He did not command the presence and control from his S position that LC has this year, imo.
This stretch of play has been impressive and he's still growing into it, but it needs to continue to establish that it's not a tease.
Heh. My whole life, every player in Dallas is a pro-bowler.
RE: Collins, he is certainly in the discussion. Lets see how it ends up, more games to play. Usually the later games in the season will mean more(fresher in peoples minds).
He is like those two plus Deon Grant and Will Hill all rolled into one.
If he played for Dallas, the media would be ready to put him in Canton.
Agree, despite my criticism of both Reese and Collins last year. Please, no one check the archives. My critique of Collins was embarrassing. JUST.LET.IT.GO
He's still not great in coverage though and that's the most important part of a safeties job description.

I tend to think that he's making the more mundane plays as well. Isn't he leading the team in tackles for instance (thought I heard that somewhere)? He always seems to be around the ball and has not only made the big eye-popping hits\tackles but also the more 'just get the guy down' type as well.
Also, he may not be 'great' in coverage... but I'd settle for 'pretty darn good'.
In fact, he just might be the NFL’s best defensive player. Period.
With five interceptions in the last four games and two NFC defensive player of the week awards this season, Collins is a star who might be mentioned in the same breath as some of the other greats in franchise history.
With three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt out for the season after reinjuring his back, the field is wide open for the award. There is no doubt that Collins is in the mix, and as far as I’m concerned, he’s at the top of the list.

Then Kam Chancellor must be a terrible Safety.
IMO, and I might get shit on for it, but I don't think he's been playing THAT much above what Will Hill was playing for us in '13. Will Hill was better than Antrel during Anrel's best season for us. Phillips was safe and good, but never touched the level Hill/Rolle/Collins have played at for stretches.
Great young player, Pro Bowler for sure... All Pro, maybe... DPOY, I don't think he deserves it.

Marcus Peters also up there. Shutdown CB w 5 INTs after 8 last season.
Imagine if the Giants had another DPOY candidate, oldman Eric Weddle next to Landon. Wouldn't be fair. The mediocre FS play will be evident vs teams with multiple receiving threats like Wash & Detroit.
This secondary is for real. I really hope they can keep it together for 17/18 when NYG should have a real chance at a SB run.
Pro bowl for sure and All Pro SS most likely. But isn't an all pro pass rusher like Miller infinitely more valuable (and therefore a better case for DPOY) than an all pro SS?

he'd be a strong candidate to receive the honor, assuming he continues his stellar play obviously
What the hell does Dallas have to do with this? If he keeps playing like this and the Giants go 11-5 he has a legit shot.
I take it you don't watch ESPN?
...or the NFL Network?
....or any other sports news outlet?
