Tough to be a lttle kid rooting for your team in mid.60s. The trade of Huff was very upsetting and in many ways was the forbearer to what was to come. Never forgot that last field goal and took satisfactio from a silent stadium championship game in 86'
Sam Huff was a bitter, old fool. Yes, I'm really sorry Â
about his current state of dimentia. No one should have to go through this, especially his loved ones..
We were getting old. We had had a good run from '56-'63 and it was time for a change. He himself wasn't old(29?), but many of his supporting cast was. He was their only viable trade chip they had for improvement..Was I against the trade? Yes. Was it a trade that returned equal value? No, albeit Stynchula was still a pretty good DL, but Dickie James, one of the best versatile offensive players(and specials) in the league, was on a steep decline...
Could we have traded him to someone else for better value? Probably. But, were there any takers? His old coaches Lombardi and Landry didn't seem to to be in any hurry to re-unite with Huff..
His carrying a grudge for all the years(yes, he hated Sherman, we get that) was beyond the pale imo..Carrying all that anger through all those years. Sheesh..

Holy crap, Gary Woods was still a Giant? Nightmares of the '63 title game.....
I don't even remember Kennedy.....
Yeah, I think he played one(?) game for us. He was imported from the Continental Football league as I recall. Strange, but for some reason I remember losing to the Rams that game, 52 or 55-14..
Remember the game pretty well heck I was only 11 Yo ..
But was pissed about the FG at the end but it was a fun game
scoring 41 . Back then I could recite the starting lineups
by heart . Gary Wood from Cornell jsu 45 minutes up the
road Earl Morral to Homer Jones connections Childs made
some big plays the O-line was regressing ..
It's like embedded it my memory bank like Kennedy's death. I watched that game with my father at my uncle's house . I watched as two grown men went crazy watching the game unfold.
"New York ffi—The New York Giants bought quarterback Tom Kennedy of the Brooklyn Dodgers of the Continental League Monday as a backup quarterback for Gary Wood. The Giants lost Earl Morrall, their regular No. 1 passer, when he suffered a fractured wrist bone in a workout Saturday. Kennedy, 27, is 6-foot- and 200 pounds. He leads the Continental League in passing with 191 completions in 316 tries for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was to make the trip to Los Angeles with the club Monday afternoon. The purchase price was not disclosed.
A product of Los Angeles State, he was drafted originally by the Los Angeles Rams and had a trial with the Pittsburgh taxi squad. He played with Providence in the Continental League in 1965 and with the Dodgers in 1966. Coach Allie Sherman said he will play Wood against the Rams Sunday. Kennedy will be given a chance to learn the club’s offe se during workouts at Anaheim, Calif., this week. The Giants were down this Saturday by St. Louis, 20-17."
In the next to last game of the season vs Pittsburgh, Kennedy went 14 for 24 for 229 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. One of those touchdown passes was to Homer Jones and covered 82 yards. The Giants still lost 47-24.
For the season he attempted 100 passes completing 55 for 748 with 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
Kennedy came to camp in 1967 to compete with the newly acquired Fran Tarkenton, Morrall, and UDFA Hank Washington out of West Texas A&M (School that produced Mercury Morris, Duane Thomas, Rocky Thompson).
Kennefy suffered a broken collarbone in preseason and was placed on IR. In 1968 he was released.
Wood was lost to NO in the expansion draft in 1967 where he was buried behind Gary Cuozzo and Billy Kilmer. In 1968 the Giants would reacquire him for a draft choice after they traded Morrall to Baltimore.
The 1967 training camp QB's cost the Giants Erich Barnes, Darrell Dess, and a fourth round draft choice for Morrall in 65, two Humber ones and two number twos for Tarkenton in 67 and a large for then $40,000 signing bonus for Thompson the NCAA's fourth leading passer in 1966 who was the Giants first black QB candidate.
