Anyone still think re-signing him was a bad move? If anything, the mistake was not locking him up long-term.

He's playing like a man possessed. I don't care who the opponent was today. What he has done and what he has come back from has been incredible. People on this board said he'd never play football again a year and a half ago. They said he'd never be the same and that it was impossible to play at a competitive level without a normal hand. A lot of people didn't want him back.

The man made a mistake and busted his ass to make the best of it and get himself back on the football field. This is as good as he's ever played. He's in phenomenal shape.

Proud of #90 and what he's been able to do. Pretty amazing story. He has overcome odds that were stacked pretty high against him.
I hope we can lock him up for a few more years

I don't think we'll be able to re-sign both Hankins and JPP (too much cap allocation to the starting DL), and if it comes down to it, I take JPP.
Yup,

great for JPP. He took less money to come back too. Lock him up long term.
I don't know if they have the stomach to throw another huge contract

At the defense, but I'd love to see JPP in blue for a long time.
Might need even another thread
ZGiants98 : 11/27/2016 4:10 pm : link
But this might be one of the greatest defensive performances ever by a Giant. 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles (if this stands), and an interception for a TD??
Agree 100%

Been the topic of conversation in my house today. He has risen to the challenge, and this D is better because he's playing incredibly well, and opposite of OV. Need to keep these 2 together.

I wont cite the opponent, but the entire line (and defense) was playing very well today. Snacks was just a terror inside. Hankins was up and down the line and Vernon even dropped into coverage today. I am not discrediting his game, but the Browns O had their hands full today with that D line.

But I am in the resign JPP ASAP boat.

A pay cut? I dont think so.
Based on Reese's track record
nyjuggernaut2 : 11/27/2016 4:48 pm : link
Hankins won't be back next season, and he'll use a 2nd round pick on a new DT. Cofield walks, drafts Linval Joseph. Joseph walks, drafts Hankins.

Agreed. The book on him pre-injury was insanely talented but questionable work ethic who wasn't always in great shape. He's grown up a ton since the hand injury and become one of my favorite Giants.
That wasn't the book on him.

Plenty of people said that about him. There was the case to be made that the back injury he suffered early in his career hindered him, and the label was unfair, but there were plenty of articles questioning his work ethic after his play tailed off after his monster 2nd season.

To his credit, he's now proven anyone saying that wrong about him
Plenty were wrong
KWALL2 : 11/27/2016 5:16 pm : link
He's been outstanding every year. Plays hard. Plays hurt. Plays every play. A handful to block.

Injured his back and gained a little weight and some came up with this book. This idea he's lazy or doesn't work. It wasn't accurate.
He's been very good this year, no doubt.
Dave in Hoboken : 11/27/2016 5:18 pm : link
more of this year and 2011 JPP, please.
His play wsexcellent in 2012
KWALL2 : 11/27/2016 5:19 pm : link
The only thing lazy about it was the commentary. He was exceptional vs the run, beat the shit out of Trent Williams and Smith in Dallas, and his WB pressure % was higher than 2011.

Judging a guy by sack numbers is weak. That's what happened. That's the book.

Yeah, just give us this year and 2011 JPP, with Vernon as the other DE, and that's a pretty sick 1-2 punch. Just need some back ups to get these guys some rest here and there.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to argue - my original post was to give him credit for proven those people wrong

Am I wrong or did JPP have back problems previously?

The idea about his work ethic
KWALL2 : 11/27/2016 5:27 pm : link
Being a problem and his play as well. Saying it was an issue was BS.

What was your point about the "book" on JPP?

That his play dropped and his wprk ethic was an issue, right? My point was your book and anybody puttting it out there was wrong.

I never said it was my "book". I used to argue with people back in 2012 who claimed he was lazy. Too lazy myself to try and check the archives, but I'm quite sure my posting history from back then would back me up.

I fully admit I was very critical when the news of his fireworks accident first broke, but that was the point of view of "how could he be so careless"?

But I'm now happy he's proven wrong once and for all anyone who ever questioned his work ethic with the way he's come back from that injury.
That play where
area junc : 11/27/2016 5:37 pm : link
he sacked McCown from the ground was crazy. That's the freaky stuff he did in 2010/2011. You're not supposed to be able to do that.
Got it
KWALL2 : 11/27/2016 5:37 pm : link
I see him as a guy who has always player well and hard for the team and many don't appreciate what the guy brings. Instead they get hung up on sack numbers.

The one thing he did every year was play hard vs the run or pass. The lazy tag that gets posted here on occasion drives me nuts. I just don't get how anybody can say that about this player.
The lazy label was after he had back surgery and showed up
David in LA : 11/27/2016 5:43 pm : link
with some extra weight. I have my suspicions the talk that he's lazy was floated out by the team to use as a bargaining chip later down the road.

Maybe saying that was "the book" on him wasn't the right phrase - moreso, that was the chatter from a lot of the writers and fans for a while about him.

To your point, the one thing we've always seen from him is the way he hustles downfield to make tackles. He's often in on tackling a WR or TE after a short/mid range pass, something not many other defensive linemen manage to do
If everyone on our team

Love me some JPP! I hope he stays in blue.
This is what both the Giants and JPP wanted to see......
Reb8thVA : 11/27/2016 6:29 pm : link
The Giants needed a test season to see whether JPP was worth a huge investment. JPP needed a quality season to prove his worth and that he could still play at a high level, so as not to sell himself short. Both sides should be pleased.

I didn't have any predictions after his injury
Mike in Long Beach : 11/28/2016 2:40 pm : link
But I definitely thought he was going to have a good 2016 based on what I saw in the 2nd half of 2015. He led the league in QB hurries despite only playing in 8 games. I think that was the stat? Either way, he was getting to the quarterback with regularity but just couldn't finish off the play.

This year he started out with the same type of play and I did start to doubt whether or not he'd be a truly elite pass rusher again (though I did think he was certainly a legit starter who could disrupt a game).

But yeah, he looks to be a Pro Bowl player again. If he keeps going like this he'll certainly be there this year.

arcarsenal : 11/28/2016 2:43 pm : link
I think his experience truly changed him. Some guys just never learn from their mistakes but you could tell that he was so determined after what he went through and realized that he couldn't take any of this for granted.

Things like this are why you have to be open to giving people second chances. Guys like JPP deserve them and make good on them.

He's getting better every week.
He's been playing well, having a good year
JonC : 11/28/2016 2:47 pm : link
and has been coming on as the season wears on. Last few games he's been really disruptive and the collective of stats are reflecting the hustle along with the eyeball test.

in 11 games than he has in any previous season of his career. He's also tied with Vernon for 5th in hurries (20) this season. Last year he was 2nd in hurries per game with 3; Justin Houston had 3.18 per game.
