NGT: How Does Jim Brown Keep Getting Invitations?

Motley Two : 11/28/2016 2:48 pm
Seriously? I haven't seen the dude smile in over 3 decades. He never looks happy to be anywhere, but there he is. He's always there. The only time I hear about him saying anything, it's always negative, a criticism, a gripe, ect.

When it comes to dusting off & propping up old sports heroes, I'd rather have Philly's Rocky statue. That thing at least looks to be kind of enjoying itself...or at least doesn't look down right miserable.

What's with the dude?
Which Browns fan looks happy

Except for BB56 who is the cheeriest bastard alive.
He doesn't even seem like he's a Browns fan.
Motley Two : 11/28/2016 2:56 pm : link
Plus, it's not be behavior unique to when he's attending a Browns game. It's everything. Invite him to be on some pregame show? Miserable. Sit up front at the Espy's? Miserable.

Yeah, but without Tater Tots he'd be on suicide watch.

maybe in the top five of the greatest players to don a uniform in the NFL. That's why.
Brown..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/28/2016 3:37 pm : link
has been angry most of his life from a public persona. Aloof as well. To his inner circle, he is supposedly very generous and different.

Does he really bother you that much?
If he keeps getting invitations, we should get our kicker back

Colin Kaepernick will hold the same position of respect and dignity with the 49ers as the beating heart of the franchise... a maverick, a visionary, a leader who fought bitter adversity for his beliefs, an agent of social change, a hero for social justice, friend to the oppressed. Okay, maybe not...

Not bothered, just a curiosity. So it's an act?

Isn't that actually four words, LOL.
Not an act..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/28/2016 4:00 pm : link
necessarily. He really doesn't like people all that much except for a small group that he trusts. Feels like he had to control his destiny - which is why he left at the top of his game.

Met him a couple of times around the Combine - can't say he was either angry or happy - just really quiet, but the people I know say he's misunderstood because he isn't a typical star. Has always gone to the beat of his own drum - and was one of teh first black athletes to speak out about race (with Ali)
He's a Cleveland Brown fan

Bluesbreaker : 11/28/2016 4:08 pm : link
Fatman has it right and in his hey day not to many people
wanted a piece of him .He was to RB as LT was to LB ...
Few understand how dominant he was....
grizz299 : 11/28/2016 4:09 pm : link
When he retired (after only seven years) he ownded every record in the book.
How dominant? Jim Taylor had Lombardi's schemes and four all pro players blocking for him.
In a 12 game season there's years where Taylor finished second with just over a thougsand yards. JImmy Brown was getting 1800 yards without a great line and if Taylor had Paul Horning to distract a defense , everyone concentrated on stopping Big Jim.
His records were eclipsed only because they went from a 12 to 16 game schedule. But his 5.4 yards per attempt still stands (tied by a QB).
They named the Browns after him so I guess he can go there when he wants. (Just kidding).
Four words:

Three the Hard Way.
Some of these ex-players have been convicted or accused of
jcn56 : 11/28/2016 4:20 pm : link
rape, DUI, domestic violence - and they still get invited back.

And you're wondering why they welcome back a HoF RB when all he has done is be cranky and outspoken?

Jcn, Jim Brown has been accused of multiple...
Crispino : 11/28/2016 4:49 pm : link
incidents of violence against both men and, more often women. He was charged with attempted murder for throwing a woman from the balcony of his hotel. Miraculously, that woman, like others, refused to testify. He has been sued, ordered to undergo anger counseling, and served time in jail for violating probation and counseling guidelines following a domestic violence incident. Look it up. The guy has a long record of being a violent scumbag.

and an equally miserable sonofabitch. Yup, he got invitations, too. I agree that it isn't correct, by a long shot, but the reality is that, in a culture that worships superstar athletes, anything short of being convicted of a major felony is likely to be ignored.

OJ finally crossed the line in a provable way, and once he gets out won't be getting many invitations, except from his parole officer. And he even smiles.
Jim Brown...
EricJ : 11/28/2016 5:49 pm : link
seems like he is constantly fighting some sort of injustice that has been waged upon him. The dude should just hang out, enjoy his hall of fame status, sign autographs, take some viagra and bang whatever it is he likes to bang... and just enjoy life.
Have you ever met Jim Brown?
B in ALB : 11/28/2016 6:31 pm : link
I'll venture a guess that you haven't.
I got to interview Jim Brown on the phone once.
Beezer : 11/28/2016 6:35 pm : link
He was scary as fuck and cranky as hell. Fist thing he wanted to know - how the hell did I get his home number? The Ravens (at the time) front office, I swear! lol

He did warm up to the conversation, which was mostly about Ernie Davis and what might have been. Couldn't stretch to say he was "nice," though. He was decent, which I took and ran! :)
Jim Brown has
SomeFan : 11/28/2016 6:38 pm : link
been accused a number of times of domestic abuse. His demeanor does not make me think those are bullshit.

That would have been a better question.

some promotional issue back in the 60's He wanted to play a round of golf, so the organizer of the event he was promoting knew my dad and avid golfer and asked he if would play with Brown.

My two brothers 8 and 10 years old caddied for him, I just followed him around. He was extremely nice to my family and me.

He is also the greatest football player that ever lived.

Yep. Again. Sounds about right.

I've met Mr. Brown on a few occasions at Syracuse and he actually played against my father in high school. He remembered my dad as they butted heads a few times.

GOAT.
I lived in the dorm next to his about a mile off campus.
Phil in Joisey : 11/29/2016 12:32 am : link
He had a car I did not. I used to hitchhike back to the dorm from the main campus. J.B. would ALWAYS stop and pick up his fellow students and give them a ride out to the Collandale dorms. He wasn't terribly talkative in those days, but surely pleasant enough.
For any of you who think he was just a dumb jock....go to Google and look up Jim Brown's net worth. You may be somewhat surprised.

On the flip side, he's done a lot of good. Watch his edition of "A Football Life". It shows both sides of the man. It's quite interesting.

No, and I saw your follow up post about a very positive personal experience that you had with him which is great. I do not think that I said the guy was an asshole nor did I say that he is never nice. In summary, my point is that he often has a chip on his shoulder.

Now, I have (like you) had personal experiences with others who were great to me as well. Mike Tyson, OJ Simpson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, etc Many others too where others have had a far different experience than I did. A friend of mine is a well known sports autograph collector and when I was younger, I used to go with him to meet the athletes. I cannot tell you how many times we had a great experience with a guy who was known for being an asshole and then someone who is portrayed as being great is the one who turns out to be that asshole.
Bill, I know Brown has done some good things.
Crispino : 11/29/2016 10:59 am : link
No one is all good or all bad. I was just pointing out some facts as some posters seemed to be unaware of his checkered past. Hes done some pretty egregious stuff by his own admission, assaulting women for starters.
