Kelvin Sheppard

Re-Watching the Browns game. I know he didn't make any game changing plays, But I did notice the Sheppard seems much more fluid, agile, and powerful lately than he had earlier in the season, where he simply was taking up space. I don't think he is by any means a great player, but I do think he has made strides this season and looks to be a solid MLB at least for this season, possibly moving forward. Anyone else int he scouting world agree?
Far from a scout

But I thought he looked a lot better in coverage than I thought he would. He's also made some nice stops on the run at times.
I actually had the same thought

during the game. Nothing spectacular but he looked faster and more fluid out there. Perhaps he needed to adjust to Spags D and will get better from here on out
That said,

I hope Goodson continues to earn snaps. If he becomes a decent piece in the middle, we could have a solid group of guys there.

I hope he forces Sheppard to the bench by Week 17.
Goodson hasnt done anything

that I have seen to force Sheppard anywhere.. also it isnt just about running around making hits.. as the MLB can he make the alignment calls for the defense??
Goodson ?

I honestly have not even noticed him get any playing time
on Defense if he has it's not been much...
Sheppard has stepped up a bit the last few games but he has
not been much of a factor and very few impact plays .
Maybe he does more with his head than with his playmaking .
I hope Goodson gets some more looks I think he would be
an upgrade in the run D ...

He's had limited action. But, he was on the D this week. If his role increases incrementally, a la Perkins, that'd be exciting to see.
Sheppard has trouble

shedding blockers at the LOS and does not hold his ground at initial contact.....

Coverage? What coverage?

As for Goodson, only place I recall him making tackles is on ST's....if you can't crack this lineup of linebackers, anywhere, that tells you something...
Goodson got one play on defense. Same as Herslick

Sheppard got 25 snaps. Robinson many more.

You are dreaming if you think Goodson will take over as MLB anytime soon.
Yes, it tells you that you're a mid round rookie LB working in

to a defense that's ranked in the top 10 by getting work on specials first.
The one thing he does do good

And I have been watching is he gets the front 7 lined up very well seems to have a knack where the play is going but he isn't fast enough usually to get where he needs to go !
The Sheppard I saw remains a below average MLB
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 11/29/2016 8:17 am : link
who can't disengage blockers and makes his tackles 4 yards down the field or jumps into the pile late.

0 tackles for loss with those two tackles in front of him.
Sheppard

doesn't display good read recognition, doesn't proactively fill holes, doesn't shed blockers and get to or hit the runner until he's downfield. LBs need to step forward and fill the hole, deliver the hit, and wrap up the runner. He almost always waits until the runner delivers the blow to him and then drags the runners down.

No bueno. Goodson must be slow to demonstrate growth in practice, so far.
Those who say Sheppard has improved

I don't know what you're watching. He might be a good team guy, but as a LB, he is a bum. Routinely gets macked by OL and FBs, slow to the hole and not a great finisher.

I agree he may be an asset as far as alignments and play recognition, but the defense is much better with him off the field.
Sheppard is the weak link of the D and

it will really show against better offensive opponents with better run blocking and O-line play. Nobody knows how Goodson has been doing in practice, but the guy was a tackling machine at Clemson. Hopefully, he gets on the field sooner than later. My gut tells me he is much better v the run than Sheppard.
I agree .
NikkiMac : 11/29/2016 9:13 am : link
I would rather see three safety look to get Shepard off the field problem is we can't seem to get past the safety injury bug !
The LBs are all cared back up types

IMO. Reese is very happy w mediocrity there and to invest in the DL and DBs. It's working. But he better re-sign both JPP and Hankins or people will realize how pedestrian the group is. The Giants LB have it easy w that front and back. They are almost always invisable expect when they blow tackles and coverage which again they are supremely blessed to have studs in front and behind.

They don't have even one guy who isn't eAsily replaced. Not one
