NFT: Braves acquire 2014 6th overall pick OF Alex Jackson

Jay on the Island : 11/29/2016 5:00 pm
The Braves have acquired Alex Jackson from the Mariners, along with a player to be named later, in exchange for Rob Whalen & Max Povse

Great gamble for Atlanta in buying low on Jackson in exchange for a couple of their lesser prospects.

Yes it is but a shoulder injury had a lot to do with that.
His shoulder was not the issue

His maturity, love of the game , work ethic and 28% strikeouts in low A ball were. They kept him in extended spring for 2 mo this last year and he stilll didn't change his approach... he may never see the bigs .. could he flip it around - I guess so .. I hope he does

He hit much better over the 2nd half of last season and is still quite raw. The Braves are obviously gambling that a change of scenery will do him well and might be a wakeup call.
I like it.

Whalen was taking up a 40 man spot and there isn't much need for him in the rotation this year. Povse would be Rule 5 eligible next year I believe so they would have to give him a spot as well.

I do think Povse is going to be a good one but they are exactly the kind of players the Braves should be trading from the farm for these kind of dudes who have some stud potential but have shit the bed for one reason or another to bring their value down. High risk, high reward.

I like Povse as well but his ceiling is a #4 starter and there are so many higher upside pitchers in front of him. I am glad that they traded Povse and not Weigel. I like the move for the reason you stated. He has star potential even if he has a high bust rate. The Braves can afford to make gambles like this.
a good read on this deal

here is anyalsis on Conforto - taken a few picks after Alex Jackson... I preferred Conforto but was hoping Schwarber would have fallen because he was projected as a better AL piece
