anyone pick it up yesterday? I've been mulling it over since I've been dying for an RPG to play but everything about FF15 has been so underwhelming other than the graphics.
Reviews have been better than expected. Between the reviews, feedback from my friend who's playing, and watching a few different streams on Twitch here's what I have gathered:
Pros:
Graphics
Open World
Side Quests
Combat
Cons:
Voice acting is terrible
Character models
Camera angles during combat
Too much open world
I'm split 50/50 on it.

I have to know the reasons for the 4 that loved it. I don't love many games, for example, so i'm skeptical when someone says they love a game with this many supposed problems.
Totally fine that they like it, just curious what they said about it.
Personally, I'm psyched to get my hands on this huge world that Square put together. I got the game but havn't opened it yet so can't offer any first-hand thoughts.
I think if you've been a fan of Final Fantasy and like JRPGs, then it's a no-brainer to go ahead and take the plunge. Best case, you love the game and get a lot of time out of it. Worst case, you'll probably still get a lot out of it as no one is saying it's a complete bust like FF13.
I am sort of glad they decided to focus on friendship as a theme and not some hokey romance plot (Though I'm sure there's one roped in there somewhere).
Seriously though, that card game is one of the best parts of any FF, ever.

Two of them play Final Fantasy games and only Final Fantasy games. They shouldn't really count.
The other two are interesting creatures that find silver linings in every plot hole and get way too immersed in the lore. And if the lore they immerse themselves into isn't to their liking they find a way to pseudo-roleplay it to their liking. Cosplay nerds and shit that will connect with a video game character on an emotional level. The kind of people that you sometimes just can't have a proper conversation with.

Your latter two friends actually sound pretty cool in that they genuinely try to find enjoyment in things and not take things too critically. I guess it also sounds like they may be socially awkward at times but hey, at least they're happy with their hobbies.
This game is the first FF game since FFX that I really am enjoying. They took what made the recipe work and reinjected it into a game with a combat mechanic that is difficult to master but a lot of fun to play.

Haha, great descriptions. My friends are mixed but only 1 right now is playing. I have to reach out to my friend who used to work at Square but he's heavily biased so i'm not sure if that perspective is even worth getting.

Good to know. I'm likely going to give it a shot since reviews have been better than I thought they would be. Would love to be wrong about this one, its been forever since I enjoyed a FF game (since 10 for me as well).

I am very happy to hear this. My copy should be arriving in the mail today, and I am very excited to play it. FFX was the last one that I really loved playing, I actually just recently bought the remastered version to play through it again. If it is similar to X at all then I am sure it will be great.

Lol.
I wonder why people crap on FF8 (not you, I take you to be sincere); it was a fun, engrossing game. Of course, after 7, everything would pale, but it rarely gets mentioned.
They had a good idea with the game but it was executed terribly. I think Square was so shocked with how well received FF7 was in the west that they wanted to capitalize on it with 8 by thinking we wanted a game about college kids.
YES

Mixed feelings on 8. Disliked it first time through, then many years later I re-played on an emulator and basically focused above all on the sensational card game with game advancement secondary. That entertained me a lot. And the game itself wasn't without sweet moments (Queen assassination attempt, e.g.)
I remember really liking 9. 10 too except I hated Blitzball so have mixed memories of that one.
The franchise overall is IMV just good, not great. Except for the 1 obvious exception (talking Playstation 1 and above...the early games, esp 6, have their own charm) which Square's reputation is largely based on.
Video games have come so ridiculously far since 97 when Square was a primo outfit. Now any number of companies caught up and then some, esp in formerly lagging America (Naughty Dog, Blizz which blew away every other MMORPG, Insomniac) so Final Fantasy doesn't feel "special" anymore. I am still drawn to them though, and will give 15 a shot soon.
It's probably on PSN, maybe I'll give it another play through when I have some free time.

Its on PSN. Was going to download it on my old PSP over the summer but that thing bit the dust.
I liked that one as well.
I agree with this. FF9 was so good for me. Sweet spot between nostalgia and modern mechanics. I couldn't stand FF8. Draw system was awful and hitting square a billion times you used a summon? Ugh.
haha, the "boost" mechanism. F'ing awful indeed. Carpal tunnel central.
FF8 was flawed for sure. Lots of needless frustration (assembling weapons sucked too). But it had its moments, with a nice soundtrack, and as I said earlier the card game was amazing. The one in 9 (arrows instead of numbers) didn't quite live up.

Makes sense, thanks.
It's great this game is doing very well. I'm enjoying the first two hours of it and looking to dedicate a big chunk of my weekend for it, plus watching the Kingsglaive movie and Brotherhood anime. I like the combat and I find the banter of the 4 friends to be great/have some funny moments. Cindy's southern accent is extremely annoying, however. I'll get over it haha

Still far too much good along the way but subject to one heckuva prestige, I can see why some of the early reviews have kept this in the 8.2-8.7 range.

What's your take on 9? I'm debating dusting off the PS3 or PSP and making a run through 9 before deciding on 15. 7 i've played to death and the only other i'd consider is 10 since its an HD remaster, but the largest gap in time from playing has been 9.
