Darrelle Revis doesn't want to play anymore...

EricJ : 11/30/2016 7:30 pm
reported by Rotoworld...

A confidant of Darrelle Revis told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that Revis "doesn't want to play anymore."
"He's done," the confidant told Mehta. "If he had his way, he'd be done right now. He doesn't want to play anymore. He's made a lot of money." If true, it would be quite a reversal from this summer when Revis said he would play "until the wheels fall off." Well the wheels have fallen off already as the once-dominant corner has been a huge liability in the Jets' secondary this year. Revis recently admitted that he feels "old" while ESPN's Rich Cimini believes the Jets will move on from him this offseason. Revis Island is nearing its end in East Rutherford.

I guess he will have to deal with this in the media tomorrow. Let's see what his response is.

All due respect to Charles Woodson, but that DPOY was stolen from Revis. Revis had a great career, but his play has clearly taken a turn for the worse and he's made a lot of money. HOF in my book.

Career volume statistics in the NFL might start looking like Cy Youngs innings pitched totals. These guys might be willing to work their ass off and risk their health in their 20s, but less and less will be willing to risk it in their 30s if they've already made money to set them up for life and their families up for generations if they invested wisely.

How is that quite the reversal? Actually, it isn't a reversal at all.

In his prime, he was one of, if not, the most complete cornerback of all time. It's sad to see his deteriorating skills this year, but it doesn't take away from his greatness. Definite HOF in my book.
It was definitely

Yeah, you're definitely in the minority on that take. You know being about the money doesn't make him any different from the entire NFL.

This is an insane stance. He was the best CB in football for a long time and one of the best the game has seen at his peak. He's a lock for Canton.

Revis is about as good as any NFL player has been at a position. He's a generational player. He got old and banged up.

He's made a great deal of money, he's won a championship, he's been the best at his craft.

The Giants had a fine draft that year, and Aaron Ross contributed to 2 championships, but the Jets pulled off of a hell of a trade to trade up to 14 to get Revis.
I think Belichick and the Pats look brilliant now
EricJ : 11/30/2016 9:47 pm : link
most likely knowing that Revis was nearing the end. Someone please remind me whether the Pats tried to keep him.
absolutely
PaulBlakeTSU : 11/30/2016 10:20 pm : link
a Hall of Famer in my opinion. I think in his prime, he was better than Champ and better than the excellent crop of Sherman, Peterson, and Haden.

In the passing era, cornerback is almost an impossible job and Revis was incredible at it.
...
christian : 11/30/2016 10:59 pm : link
Revis is a 5-time 1st team All Pro, has a ring, was the very best at his position several years running.

His 2009 in retrospect is probably the best season a CB has ever had, rules taken into consideration.

If he's not a Hall of Famer I don't know what is.
Boo hoo
Giants2012 : 11/30/2016 11:07 pm : link
He could retire today if he wanted too.
He's absolutely a hall of famer
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/30/2016 11:08 pm : link
He also fleeced the Jets on that second contract after winning a ring.
Great CB, best at his position for a few years
trueblueinpw : 11/30/2016 11:17 pm : link
Terrific player but I also thought he was a bit over-rated. Like I say, great cornerback, not taking anything away from him or saying he wasn't the best in league for a number of years but I remember guys like Woodson and Dimetime as being at a higher level. Not an all-time great in my book.

Yea, that was a power move to get up there. Just looking into it now, both teams did really well from that trade.

The Jets traded Carolina, 25th, 59th and 164th overall, and 25/59 got them Beason and Ryan Kalil.

Carolina traded the Jets 14 (Revis), and 191.
The 191 pick they packaged along with their other 2nd round pick (63) and their 3rd rounder (89) to Green Bay for David Harris (47th overall).

Interesting.
I am in the minority, but I think Revis is/was slightly overrated.
Matt M. : 11/30/2016 11:49 pm : link
Yes, in his prime, he was a great CB. However, his first knee injury made that prime cut short. After that, he has anywhere between a still very good, but not great, CB to an average CB due to injuries and age. At his height, though, I am not rating him as high as all time greats like Green, Rod Woodson, Deion, etc. I place him a notch below.
I think he will

I was thinking that too a few weeks ago but man, Revis really looks cooked out there. FS and CB are two different animals so maybe Revis could extend his career and even flourish in the new role but I don't know. I am sure he has the instincts needed but the guy can't move or hit or do much of anything anymore. Talk about falling off a cliff he went from great to very good with the Pats, to good last year with the Jets to garbage.
Kind of odd to say it but he's a future HOFer
