I supposed I should't be surprised, though in a year with an Olympics and some droughts broken, there were certainly a lot of candidates out there. He's not unworthy but could be a popular pick. I leaned toward Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps, particularly MP since he finished his career, and in some style.

Perhaps not for retiring per se, but he certainly wrapped up a brilliant Olympic career with 23 gold medals and 28 altogether, and also won five of those gold medals at the age of 31. So, no, no bonus points for retiring but he's certainly worthy of consideration on performance alone.
