Paul Perkins needs to be on the field more

Josh in the City : 12/4/2016 9:06 pm
He's by far our best RB and he can make things happen when he's on the field. He has good vision and quickness and if we stuck with him and the run I would expect the running game to get better as the game progresses. Instead he gets 1 out of every 3 series or so and can never get into any rhythm. He's also shown to be a good receiver out of the backfield and an above average blocker who seems to know and understand his assignments particularly well for a rookie.

We need to stop abandoning the run so quickly and allow it to get going. We all know that Eli is at his best when he can effectively run play action (also would help if he wasn't in shotgun every single snap). I don't know if allowing Sullivan to take over play calling will help but we need to figure this out soon.
I agree

Give him more touches and let him get his groove. Enough of Jennings carrying the load. Reduce him and feature Perkins.

agree. He doesn't have breakaway speed, but his tremendous "make you miss" ability at least gives us a chance of having a running game.
Jennings isn't the problem

but he isn't the solution either. More Paul Perkins would be an improvement. Maybe there'd even be a designed pass to a running back now and then.

I know, I know, let's not get crazy.
I like jennings as a player but he cannot be our feature back

situational player at this point and perkins absolutely should see the field more. I wouldn't mind seeing them both in the backfield together.
I would take Perkins over Jennings, but neither of them

is close to being a starting NFL RB. Both are averaging an unacceptable 3.4 yards per carry. Since Perkins is a rookie, he has some possible upside with more playing time. Further, Jennings only averages 6.5 yards a catch. He is pure mediocrity.

But neither of them is fast, elusive or powerful. Vereen in his short time playing this season averaged 4.7 yards per carry and 9.4 yards per catch.

I'm sure they could find half a dozen running backs better than Jennings on other teams' practice squads.
Absolutely

He averaged 5.7 today. We definitely gave up on that today.
I agree as well.

Good vision and speed. And Jennings has lost any quickness he once had.
Agree.

I'd also like to see him get more carries with a standard set having Eli under center. They ran that once with Perkins today and it was a 15 yd gain. Feels like he almost exclusively runs out of shotgun.
If we had a great O-line, I could live with Jennings
SHO'NUFF : 12/4/2016 10:12 pm : link
but with a shit O-line, they need a back that can make something out of nothing.
The fact that we can't run one designed pass play

to get Perkins in space is so frustrating, when you consider that guys like Sproles, Riddick and Dion Lewis are out there doing it regularly.
Both running backs weren't the problem

Really hard to gauge our running backs

I thought Perkins was meh before today, I thought today was a nice showing, the time he juked James Harrison out of his boots was really nice. However, it is a small sample size, he had 7 carries today and in his last four games before today he averaged 3.2, 4.0, 3.4, and 2.9 YPC and the 4.0 was on 4 carries. Don't really see how he is better or worse tha Jennings at this point.
More of Perkins . This kid can move in traffic.

Makes people miss. May be a weapon we really don't have in the backfield
Yes he does
