..and I've been very impressed by what he's shown both as a pass rusher and run defender of late. I think since he's shaken off his early season injuries he's been a force on D.
We signed a guy who is just hitting his stride now. I completely disagreed that the price we paid was too steep for this player. He was worth the contract we gave him. He will be an impact player for the duration of the deal and we will get his best football.
The next drive Ben hits a wide open Green for a huge gain. Vernon was absolutely mugged on the play. No call. No comment from the two ball bags doing the game.
While the focus of most DEs is QB pressure and sacks, I have been most impressed by his job against the run. As he worked through the hand issues and his sack #s early on were unimpressive, he was still very good against the run.

I remember that play as well. That was one of those plays where I was like if that is not holding I must not understand the rule...or these refs are just awful.

Notice how the OL's hand placement is inside Vernon's shoulder blades instead of outside. When it comes to getting flagged, it's all about the placement of the OL's hands, not whether or not there is actual holding going on. That's how the refs are trained.
p.s.-- at least that's my amateur/limited understanding of it, maybe someone with more expertise can chime in.

Generally speaking, you are correct. However, when the O Lineman is beaten like Vernon did on that play, any grabbing of a jersey, especially when it's right in front of the QB, should be called without hesitation.
RE: My thoughts are he gets held more than any player
I've seen in the past 10 years. It's fucking ridiculous.
The play in the first quarter where Ben hit green for a huge gain, #78 was holding the shit out of Vernon and the refs just let it go. Yet the drive before they flagged flowers for a less blatant hold.
Has been everything we could have hoped he was. I love him and Reese deserves a ton of credit for the three players on defense he picked up in free agency, all three have been major contributors and I can't imagine what this defense and team would be without all three.

That picture is the least amount of hold on that play. If you get the video from the Pitt endzone, you will see that Villanueva had his arm completely across Vernon's chest for several yards. So blatant that the refs had to ignore his holding.
Quite disgusted with this...
is we paid too much and JPP will want same and he
has better season.
The only reason players chose to play out their contracts and not sign an extension before their contracts expire (at the risk of injury and losing everything) is to force interested teams into a bidding war and overpaying in FA.
So if you want a good player you almost always have to over pay.
But in 2017, 2018 at most, we'll probably look back & think we got him at a very reasonable price.
The only real downside, is if he doesnt work out, and doesnt play as expected. Based on this season, I dont think we have to worry about that.
Brings back memories of Strahan vs Runyan!
Adding talent like that is worth the money, especially when you can afford it.
By the Flowers standard, we should've had a safety for endzone holding against Pitt.

There is a perfect shot of that mug, er, holding v Vernon on this link

Me too. Thought it was a risky signing based on his production to date.
He's been outstanding and has gotten better as the season has progressed.
