Do You Have To Be Able To Run The Football In December?

gidiefor : Mod : 12/5/2016 12:39 pm
....
If you do

I think Perkins is primed to do it. 5.7 ypc yesterday?

I think Jennings whiffing on the block might lead to a Perkins takeover.
I thought we got away from the run yesterday

That's on Eli and the playcalling.
You have to able to run the ball in any month.
GeorgeFox : 12/5/2016 12:42 pm : link
Without the ability to run the ball the play action asses just won't work. In addition, a team becomes one dimensional and predictable.
Perkins actually had 1 more carry than Jennings yesterday
adamg : 12/5/2016 12:43 pm : link
actually. So, the takeover might have already begun.
We can't run the ball in any

Month ...
If anyone thinks that they can win against winning teams
without one is kidding themselves .....
TOP is slowly wearing out our Defense its looking like a slow death as our Defense will face good running games the rest
of the season ...Hopefully something dramatically changes
but we don't have the goods right now ...
What I am most shocked at
Matt M. : 12/5/2016 12:49 pm : link
is that Perkins isn't getting more touches in the passing game. He is the perfect type of back to use on screens, but also to dump it off. Imagine him as the checkdown with only a LB to bet and receivers having already cleared a portion of the field. He is much more of a threat to pick up YAC for nice gains than Jennings. While he may not have overwhelming success with this OL, yesterday showed why he is still a better choice. He almost always makes the first man miss. So, he isn't getting tackled for losses. A 1 yard gain for Jennings is a 2-3 yard gain for him. Etc.

Plus, a few weeks ago there was a stat where over 70% of the snaps he was on the field for were a run. That has changed a bit in that they now are entrusting him a bit more to block, but they haven't really incorporated him into the passing game as a weapon, which I think is a mistake.

I was annoyed Eli went to Tye on that fourth down within the 15. He had Perkins open in the flat. Though, Eli wasn't comfortable enough to look around yesterday, so it's not his fault per se.
But you have to be able to run the ball first....
Doomster : 12/5/2016 12:53 pm : link
We can't.....Perkins had one, I repeat, one big run that skewed his average...

Wouldn't it be great if we could run the ball on third and short? Easy first downs....or you play action a runner into the line, and because you can run the ball the linebackers and safeties have to come up, leaving lanes for the receivers to get open....

But we can't, and that is a huge part of the offense that is missing....no respect for our running game....because we have none....even Ron Dayne could run behind the Dallas line.....expecting Jennings/Perkins to pick up short yardage, is niot going to happen....and yet we kill drives still trying to do this....

Until this offense gets it out of their head, that they have to set up the pass with the running game, instead of setting up the running game with the pass, it is going to fail like it has....
Want to talk predictability?

Donnell had not been in the game as yet, suddenly there here
is lined up in the slot at about the 10 yard line.
Well, it seems like they are going to throw to Donnell now,
since he just came in. I thought that, so did Timmons.
What a poor decision that was by Eli as well. As soon
as that ball was picked of, just knew uphill battle the rest
of the game. Once it was 11-0, did anybody feel that they
would win the game? I never had that feeling yesterday.

I agree that was the dagger play. But, I actually don't think anyone wanted to talk predictability in this thread.
How about a formation
Simms11 : 12/5/2016 1:16 pm : link
with Jennings and Perkins in the same backfield. That would most certainly throw off the defense.
yes. especially if you can't pass it either.

the O is putrid.

Let's not forget, they struggled against CLE, didnt get 1 offensive TD vs NO, and have generally shown an inability to sustain drives all year.

.

Well, if they want to run the ball better, fix the O Line.
This is who they have for now.
Having a running game is always a big plus
Vanzetti : 12/5/2016 3:23 pm : link
But it is not as essential as it once was. Packers and Giants won SBs with running attacks ranked 31st and 32nd, respectively.

Teams with bad QBs usually base their offense on running the ball. Teams with good QBs generally use the running game to set up the passing game.
We will find out.......
