Cruz in the slot

nicks14 : 12/5/2016 2:51 pm
Man i have no doubt Shepard will be s good pro for the Giants but what's with this stubbornness of not letting Cruz see some snaps out of the slot. I mean before injury this guy was the best to ever do it out of the slot and to not even explore seeing what he could offer there is insane. In training camp we heard raves about Shepard making plays on the outside now all of a sudden he's immune to playing the outside. I know most Giants fans think Cruz is done but i guarantee the he'd be better of for the rest of the season in the slot the Shepard is.
He's not getting targeted

but he has made about a big play a game for most of the season.

I don't think he's as cooked as everyone else thinks he is, but we aren't giving him the chance to adjust to what he can still do - come out of the slot, run a great route, find a soft spot in a zone, and make a move or two with the ball in his hand.

how do you know that?

Cruz has lost a step or 2 just by age and injury alone. His return to the field is inspiring and we are all rooting for him. But he also hurt his ankle a couple of weeks ago and has not shown any separation in the games he's been in. If you could tell me that this is Cruz from 2011, then yes, you are right, they shouldn't play Shepard there. But from the coaches perspective, who see him everyday, and watch the film, Shepard is better. And right now, odds are that on the outside, Lewis Jr. might be better than Cruz as well. All good things must come to an end, because if it didn't, it would never end. I hope Cruz has one more big game or play in him down the stretch to help out, but I do think he's done.

This Roger Lewis crap is starting to get really annoying. If Roger Lewis was the answer and creates separation so easily then why isn't Eli just getting the ball to Lewis since he's the king of separation? Truth is he stinks yeah he's a rookie but he stinks. It's funny how certain people will hype up a scrub like lewis who can't catch the clap in a whore house even when he is open but most of you wanted to run Rueben Randle out of town. Sad to say but this offense would be better with Randle and OBJ on the outside with either Cruz or Shepard in the slot but Roger Lewis is not the answer.
Sometimes it takes more than a year to get back fully from an injury

Cruz is obviously nowhere near where he was, but I wouldnt count him done & out yet. I'd give him another season, see how it works out. But if the Giants can get him at a discount, that would be great. Based on his production, I dont think iy would be hard to re-negotiate. Cruz has business ties in the NY/NJ area, this is where he made his name, as a local star... I dont think he'd want to go anywhere else.

Having said that. Cruz is NOT an outside receiver. I'm willing to give Cruz another season, but the Giants definitely need a solid #2.
How many of us have the time
Bluesbreaker : 12/5/2016 3:26 pm : link
or resources to break down every pass play and each WR ?
To make any kind of determination whats a foul here .
We keep doing the same thing over and over and each week is
another problem with a failed play .
Right now the play calling game planning isn't very good
and the wait for the O-line to jell and the playbook to
open up and the high expectations from summer camp are not
happening .
The two biggest head scratchers is that they did not address
the O-line guys I know that don't follow the Giants thought
the same thing many of us do now that the O-line isn't very
good or good enough to compete against winning teams .
The second biggest thing was not having a player at Te or WR that was a size match up . They let Davis go without a
fair shake and the banked on the premise that a oft injured
guy that can't block and is fumble prone to be the TE
Not to mention the seriousness of his neck injury that
he would try and protect himself from further injury .
Like instead of putting his head and shoulder down and
fight three yards for a 1st down he just skipped out of bounds . So sure they inked Johnson he got hurt and was not
replaced . The smoke and mirrors are not gonna work no one
fears the run game or anyone else outside of OBJ
Cruz

the whole Cruz lost a step stuff is predicated on the fact that he has n't been good as an outside receiver this year

I think the point some - including me - are trying to make is
Cruz has NEVER been good as outside receiver - even before injury
Cruz is a great slot because he is shifty and is great route runner.

It is just mind boggling that Giants have not even tried to put him in the slot this year.

Lewis is the answer
eliapple : 12/5/2016 4:23 pm : link
if he gets in a routine and starts playin like college..
we will be unstoppable. He dropped a few and Eli seems to be a little short and guys break up pass. I'd like to give him a few deep ones and let him break in. He is a rookie
so he will make mistakes but he is playing ST's good too.
We have 3 slots

I'm not saying Lewis is the answer either. But we've seen him get open more...only to drop the ball. The Giants need to upgrade over both Cruz and Lewis next year. The point is how far Cruz seems to have fallen. We all expected more help for Odell this year with Cruz and Shepard, but it hasn't really materialized.
