Without lineup protection, he had one of the best offensive season, outside of the steroid era, in a long long time. His 2015 OPS+ is better than anything any other active player has posted by six points.
He's going to be 25 as a free agent. He's already an MVP. I absolutely hope the Yankees sign him. If it's $400M, so be it. I'd rather give Harper $400M at 25 than someone $200M over 30. Baseball contracts are so insane, this will be a bargain in 5 years.
I'm not forking over a 1st round pick for him, hell no.
All kidding aside, do people still seriously think these mega deals are a good idea? Even for a 25-year-old, no way. I'm assuming he's thinking 10 years and 40M per, personally I don't think he deserves 40M a year.
I'd give Trout 350M for 10 years though, but that's about it.
I wonder if it's the start of normalcy with what the networks will pay for sports and then the size of contracts to players. I widh more people cut the cable cord

That's what they said about ARod 16 years ago. As productive as he was, his contract never became a bargain.
And if baseball viewership continues declining, salaries will eventually as well.

Why? I never understood people who begrudge what athletes make. It has absolutely no effect on what it is you pay for your product, so either the player will be paid well or the owner will just make that much more money. Why would you care or want the owner to get paid?
But also if a player isn't producing the team can't go out and bring in another salary because of budget constraints. So these high price FA that become bust really hinder a teams ability to bring in a new stud
Have you not been paying attention to how the Steinbrenner boys run the franchise? I think that demand is obscene to begin with. IT's $100M over obscene.
a $400M player, then what is a Trout worth? A billion?
In five years, Harper's war average is < 4. Trout is 9.6.
Harper has some serious swing reconstruction to do. His front side pulls off on almost anything middle and away. It's really tough to watch because I root for the guy. In DC, he's a total rock star.
But until he demonstrates an ability to string back to back season like any of Trout's last five, I say save the money for more resources...
A disappointing season.

If you are looking for 40 million per that's not the way you get it.
He has 2 seasons to prove his worth.
than this past season was. And if that's the case, he'll get 300+ pretty easily. I don't know about 400 but anything is possible. As far as it possibly breaking up the locker room because other players would be mad or jealous, I really doubt that. The more the salaries go up in general, the better off the players are. They'll probably be thrilled if him and Machado get insane contracts.
All I know is that if his 2018 season matches or betters his 2015 season, he's getting 300 million at a bare minimum. Cano got 10 years and 240 million at age 31 I think it was. You don't get chances to sign superstar players in their prime and you'll be surprised what teams will do if they think it'll turn their team around and put butts in the seats.
$40 mill per may seem like a bargain 10 years down the road if he was overwhelmingly great, but I just don't see it. He's had one truly great season, the rest pedestrian. If he shows improvement the next two years he probably get it.
6 years, $144.5M...still can't believe they were able to keep him for that. He's a way better player than Harper too IMO. If anyone deserved a $400m contract it was probably him.
But it was a solid value, all things considered. He was the best player in the game and was paid like it. His second contract was a disaster.
This. And as pointed out a million times the Yanks were hiding against themselves. A disaster. Elsberry's deal isn't far behind either IMO. hopefully we are last there deals. Harper isn't getting 40 per year unless he tears it up next year and the team has some end of deal outs

Sure he did. But many argued that it would seem like a bargain 3-4 years later when other lesser players were getting even bigger contracts. But the salary explosion slowed and his contract remained the largest. Fair value, but not a bargain.
If someone actually gives Hatper $400M, it's very unlikely that a few years later it'll seem like a bargain. I don't see that baseball will have the revenue growth for that to happen.
Doubt the Sox will

and 4 mediocre ones around it. That year was an outlier.
