NFT: Should Casinos COURT SENIOR CITIZENS?

OldPolack : 12/6/2016 12:51 pm
Interesting article in Kiplinger"s.
Question from writer.
My mother, who lives in a retirement community, is spending a lot of time at a nearby casino, which is aggressively courting her and her friends with all sorts of freebies. Most seniors can not afford this.
It's a big portion of their clientele

If you didn't want them to solicit customers, you shouldn't have granted them a license in the first place.
What is the difference between

going to a casino or bingo parlor?

Should they? No. Will they? Of course!

There was also an article in AARP a few months back about this.

AARP is probably giving the casinos the list! lol
I think that they should market to anyone they want

the onus is on the consumer. It's not like the detriments are hidden.
In South Florida

the least expensive Slot is $.25.
The average is 5 plays a minute.
In the Vegas Casino's alcoholic drinks are free in the Casino"s in Florida they are $5. Another problem if you hit a JACKPOT for over $1200 they report it to the IRS. My wife of 50+ years is addicted to these machines and received a 1099 for her winnings of $12,000. I saw that and told her to ask the casino what her losses were - $39,000.
I've had a background in accounting, systems analysis and data processing and realized that her losses would be recorded. How many patrons do not ask?
The question becomes...

...are they taking advantage of seniors who may not have all their faculties intact? It's one thing if you are talking about the many seniors who are as sharp as they ever were, but there are also many seniors with mild forms of dementia, who are functional to get by, but highly vulnerable to persuasion.

It's similar to the issue with advertising to children (which I wrote a paper on while at the Wharton School which earned me a D and the following comment from my professor, "I find many parts of this paper to be in poor taste. Although you may not take the assignment seriously, I do.").
Yes

they can only watch so much Matlock
Why not?

It's basic marketing. Target the lowest hanging fruit. They'll do it until someone tells them to stop like the government did with cigarettes and alcohol to kids.
Sure they should.

I am becoming a senior citizen and can use all the courting I can get.
Seniors absolutely love the casinos and food and drink specials

yet sometimes they misplace their teeth and use somebody else's at the slots.
So, if seniors are not competent to make their own decisions
Bill L : 12/6/2016 7:09 pm : link
About marketing and purchases, should we also take other decisions away from them? Driving privileges for example. I actually would support that. But there are dozens if other decisions, such as living independently, that we might want to make for them as well. Why single one or the other out?
Bottom line is this
Jim in Fairfax : 12/6/2016 7:26 pm : link
A lot of people in ALL age groups lose money at casinos that they can't afford to. It's just as bad when it's a 30 year old as when it's a 70 year old. Worse, really, because there's often kids dependent on the 30 year old.
Just seems to me like the approach should be
Bill L : 12/6/2016 7:28 pm : link
Educating the consumer to make good choices..
Casinos are net negative to the society
chuckydee9 : 12/6/2016 8:19 pm : link
But I don't want the government to tell a casino who they can court and who they can't.. unless people are forced to get license to by state sponsored lottery tickets...

There's plenty of that. Only so much of it gets through and is effective.

Plenty of education out there about not screwing without protection, but nonetheless a lot of VD and unwanted pregnancies.

So you're approach would be to outlaw sex?
It's the same as cold calls or flyers in the mail
JerebilJ : 12/6/2016 9:40 pm : link
requesting CC info for "freebies". They are targeting the vulnerable. It's disgraceful. But it built AC into an empire until it all came crashing down 10 years ago.
you do know seniors laugh at us. Generally speaking they have

forgotten more than we know, are smoking pot , still having sex and have plenty of money.
