The invalid link message you're getting probably means you're placing the link in the second line (box) instead of where it belongs, in the first line (box).
Just copy and paste the link in line one and name the link anything you want in line two.

I think he was trying to use the {url}{/url} tags rather then the Add A Link feature. I've had issues in the past where the {url} tag that allows you to also specify a 'title' for the link doesn't work properly.

It always works fine. If you want to just have the url, you use the {url}http://link.com{/url} tag. if you want it with a title, you do {url=http://link.com}link title{/url}

I'm well aware of the different tags. I'm telling you I've had issues with the latter at one point and cut&paste the same link to the other tags and it worked fine.
