This is a guy who made up his own interpretation of a facemask.
Remember the play before Rodgers threw a Hail Mary against Detroit and they called the Lions for a facemask when the defender actually grabbed Rodgers shoulder pads? Here's Cheffers response - which he still defends!
Quote:
The call on Taylor was heavily questioned, but Cheffers defended it when he was coincidentally assigned to the Lions' training camp in August to give a presentation on new rules to reporters. He was asked about the flag then, and stuck by the initial call.
"I think it's an illegal tackle," Cheffers said. "Horse-collar, face mask, I think it was an illegal tackle. So I'm very comfortable with it."
Taylor had initially not believed it was a face mask and was not fined by the NFL for the play. Lions coach Jim Caldwell also said he did not believe it was a face mask at the time. Aaron Rodgers said after that game he believed it was.
Cheffers explained in August what a face mask call is.
"It's just control," Cheffers said. "So if you get fingers in there and you control the mask, there's really no element of time or anything like that in that. It's just controlling the mask, so turning the thing sideways or anything like that is enough control to have a face mask penalty."
It was an "illegal tackle". Horsecollar, facemask, whatever. He'd have been a good candidate to make up the "tackling by the helmet" bullshit.
His crews call more defensive holding than all but two other crews, but they are fairly low in calling defensive pass interference, so be prepared for a 3rd down "what the fuck was that?" bailout.
His crews also call more illegal blocks in the back than any crew, so we'll see if that impacts any ST returns.

Some defensive holds last game would've been nice!
Maybe a little off-subject, but is the grandiose spectacle that is standing in the middle of the field and announcing a penalty loudly to an audience of millions starting to bother anyone else? I think literally giving them a "voice" is contributing to the absurd amount of ego inflation. Because, let's face it, that's really the root of the problem with officiating.
