NFT: Collins wants Tebow to play in Spring Training

Canton : 12/6/2016 4:15 pm
Quote:

Collins told reporters Tuesday he'd like to have former NFL quarterback and current Mets minor-league outfielder Tim Tebow play in spring training, according to Marc Carig of Newsday.

He went on to explain that even if Tebow isn't invited to big-league camp, he'd go out of his way to make sure he could bring him over for some games.

White Sox should be able to build a monster farm system within a few weeks of time. Could be an exciting time for their fans. Middling/bad team to loaded with young talent.
Which starter do you think if you had to guess would have value and
pjcas18 : 12/7/2016 10:58 am : link
be interesting to another teams?

I think Harvey and Wheeler are obviously out.

Thor I'd hope is untouchable.

Matz and deGrom are probably borderline too (not untouchable, but interesting enough to another team they'd trade fair value for them) because of their recent surgery and injury past (both had one TJ already).

so that leaves possibly deGrom or Matz, Gsellman, and Lugo.

If we limit it to the major league roster.

So if it's a big trade it would have to be deGrom or Gsellman IMO.

I'm just guessing here.
I
DanMetroMan : 12/7/2016 11:01 am : link
suspect the offers for Harvey (as of today) would be embarrassingly low. Assuming you would never, ever trade Thor I think DeGrom would have the most trade value by a pretty reasonable margin. Good contract, proven high quality MLB SP.
Yeah I immediately thought
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 11:07 am : link
Matz/deGrom. Harvey and Wheeler have no value right now and Thor "should" be untouchable barring somebody like Trout or something. Gsellman would be shocking too considering Sandy actually said he wasn't available.
Matz
DanMetroMan : 12/7/2016 11:09 am : link
only has 1 more year of control vs. deGrom and DeGrom has made 76 MLB starts with a 2.88 FIP, Matz 28 starts 3.43 FIP and very real questions about his durability. I know which one I would want if I were another team.
Yeah certainly not saying they are equal
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 11:11 am : link
only that they likely have different levels of value to other teams.
deGrom
pjcas18 : 12/7/2016 11:13 am : link
is older too.

I do think deGrom never gets a big contract
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 11:14 am : link
and might even be done by the time he gets done being controlled as a Met but that doesn't relate to what we are discussing.

Don't think a trading team cares that DeGrom will be 29 vs. Matz's 26 when you take into account track record, durability and similar years of control. DeGrom is team controlled 29-30-31-32, Matz 26-27-28-29-30.

deGrom has been worth 3.5, 5.3 and 3.3 (missed 8 starts) fWAR, Matz has yet to make it through a full MLB season. 100% not "hating on" Matz but he's been routinely dinged even most TJ. Back, traps etc. To me either he's healthy in 2017 I doubt he has a very long career as a SP.
Since
DanMetroMan : 12/7/2016 11:19 am : link
signing with the Mets Steven Matz has thrown over 106 innings.. once. So until he proves he can throw innings he's essentially a talented cocktease. A major talent but lets see it.

No, teams don't care if they trade for him now - just an observation. Because of his late blossoming career for the reasons we all are aware of, he'll be 32 (I believe) before he hits free agency.

Sucks for him.

Sorry man but that's not correct. He's thrown 140.2, 139.6, and 132.1 the last 3 years. Not great but more innings than you are suggesting, no offense please.
I really want to see if deGrom can ever hit 190
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 11:27 am : link
innings again (he's only come close once). I just think he is so rail thin, older, has already had TJ and countless other nagging issues, and he seems to be "much" better with that extra 1-2 mph on his fast ball also. I'd almost be ok selling high on deGrom I think.
Won't answer it directly Z
Shecky : 12/7/2016 11:30 am : link
I will never speculate on something health related - it's none of our business.
I'm typically vague, because nothing should ever be directly said. Especially this offseason - it is made VERY clear things much tighter, except for public policy. But the funny thing is, when I am vague, it's actually pretty blunt and directly. Just indirectly lol. And there is one poster here who I think 'gets it'. I'm rarely vague that it could be interpreted multiple ways, so I can come back and say "SEE". I'd rather say something that amuses just myself.
I think Sandy does a great job of the above himself. Leaks "anyone is available, except Rosario". Seems vague. Seems meaningless. Yet it is a 100% direct blow.

Enough rambling. Wasn't and still isn't the intention to trade pitching this offseason. Could it happen, sure - someone could blow your socks off at any moment. But I don't see that happening. Nothing has happened in the last day or two that has changed ANYTHING.

I was going by memory, must have been another of our injury prone guys. Either way those are VERY low numbers. Those innings are so low it's fair to ?? if he can even last an entire season. 2015 it was "slept weird" which somehow turned into significant lost time, this year BOTH shoulder and elbow issues. I like Matz but calling him fragile (to this point) would be an understatement.
I'd
DanMetroMan : 12/7/2016 11:35 am : link
be willing to trade any of them but Thor (and even then Mike Trout? Machado?....) but as with anything depends on the return. Harvey/Wheeler have such depreciated value right now, neither would make any sense.

Ok. Fair enough. I understand the importance of being vague and he actually said the exact same thing in regards to the media. Says Sandy's reputation has gotten pretty good in regards to leaking and deals tend to get done when Sandy does get engaged because of it. He mentioned it seemed like things changed a bit last night. Joe D said he caught wind of some discussions that were taking place last night as well (more so than they had been prior anyway) and he never says anything without getting a call/whatever from at least two sources. Could have all been nothing. If so I apologize.

He was suggesting the board has been opened a bit. Starting pitchers might be made available where in the past they might not have been. Again, I thought that was interesting. He certainly hasn't mentioned specifics either or ever said anything was close.

Is that new or did everyone already know that.

I think it's 4 or 5 years 70M.

Also Zach Wheeler in NY today handing out coats part of community outreach.

Says he's started his whole life, but would move to the pen if Mets asked, club is "only looking out for him"

PJ,
Unless you saw something I didn't the Fowler stuff stems from an accidental tweet from Bob Nightengale who was actually talking about Desmond's deal.

thinks Duda and Bruce for Abreu and Robertson is a fair offer for the Mets. The White Sox would hang up and tell Sandy to never call again. All they get out of the deal is clearing Robertson's 2018 salary (13 million), a guy coming off a down year but still had 37 saves with 10.8 k/9. That is SOME incentive for the rebuilding White Sox....

I loved that trade. LOL, but yeah not close.

If
DanMetroMan : 12/7/2016 2:41 pm : link
Melancon got 4 for 62 and Chapman is headed toward 100+ it's safe to say if Robertson were suddenly released he'd get 4 years at a HIGHER salary than his current rate (especially once the Chapman/Jansen combo goes). The White Sox would have 0 trouble moving him for a good return if they so chose.

Slow day but the Mets have met with the Rangers. Mets need relief pitching. They are trying to trade Jay Bruce, a left-handed RF bat

Bruce is from Texas so that would make a ton of sense. They just brought back Gomez but obviously lost Beltran. Not sure they are a fit to fill the RP need, but perhaps they have something else worth discussing. I'd personally be trying to pry Lucroy off their hands since they haven't been able to extend him yet. Bruce + TDA (extra years of control!) + more for Lucroy.
Mets
DanMetroMan : 12/7/2016 3:04 pm : link
talking with the Rangers, the guess is in regard to Bruce. Alex Claudio is flat DOMINANT vs. lefties, Diekman throws very hard #Mets

Eaton is on an amazing contract and had an amazing year last year. I can't envision we'd be able to get him without giving up Rosario or 1 of our big pitchers.
Just looked
Metnut : 12/7/2016 4:50 pm : link
at Eaton's stats and wow.... didn't realize he was that good. Great contract too. Seems like the kind of guy to build around for Chicago. Hopefully multiple good pieces went from Washington to Chicago.

If you look at Eaton's WAR
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 10:30 pm : link
it shot WAY up because he moved to a corner. He actually, positively sucked in CF. As soon as he moved over his metrics shot the roof which in term made his WAR positively excellent. To me, his bat is good, but not great. His current profile (if he stays in a corner) reminds me a lot of Jayson Heyward actually pre-2016. It will be interesting to see who plays CF with Werth, Eaton, and Harper.
Eaton's a very solid add but i'm VERY glad they didn't get McCutchen
Eric on Li : 12/7/2016 10:35 pm : link
McCutchen in between Murphy/Harper would have been no bueno.
Yeah.. I think McCutchen is a solid bounce back
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 10:44 pm : link
candidate, actually. Especially if he also moves to a corner where it's easier on him. McCutchen has actual elite upside offensively where Eaton's never come close to that.
agreed - Eaton is a safer pickup on a great contract, but less upside
Eric on Li : 12/7/2016 10:46 pm : link
I don't think he'll ever be in contention for an MVP award.
I actually think McCutchen
ZGiants98 : 12/7/2016 10:48 pm : link
on the Mets bunched in with Duda, Cespedes, and Conforto would be nasty... I just don't know how he would fit logically. I guess you could trade Conforto for McCutchen and still dump Bruce but not sure I'd be up for that.
Conforto would be most likely or maybe a pkg like Matz, Dunn, Nimmo?
Eric on Li : 12/7/2016 11:02 pm : link
If they're intent on getting back pitching I think the second package gives them someone more proven than Giolito, albeit extremely injury prone, along with another high end pitching prospect to bridge the gap in value. Conforto is probably the most likely centerpiece, but I actually don't think the Mets would go there given the desire to cut payroll (trading Conforto means paying a lot for all 3 starting OF'ers).

This would be a pretty stacked top 6:
Reyes
McCutchen
Conforto
Cespedes
Duda
Walker

Fun to dream about but the rest of the offseason will consist of dumping Bruce and adding a couple relievers. I'm hoping for is to see them get aggressive and put together a Thornburg type package for Nate Jones.
Im going to be really bummed if we lose Sewald tomorrow
