NFT: Terrific column on Bud Selig, PEDs, and the Hall of Fame

Greg from LI : 12/7/2016 4:43 pm
Quote:
Selig’s election to the Hall in his first year of eligibility lays bare the incoherence of sanctimonious Hall of Fame voters with regard to PEDs. If the argument is that Selig’s accomplishments shouldn’t be clouded by his legacy as overseer of the most notorious period in post-integration baseball, then Clemens and Bonds—respectively the best pitcher and hitter of their generation—should be elected to the Hall of Fame, as well.

What the hell is the argument for Selig being in the hall? That he served in the role for a long time? It's not like he is all that responsible for any expansion of the sport -- revenues increased dramatically for all the pro sports leagues. Indeed, during Selig's tenure baseball went from the Pastime to the clear #2 sport with the ascendance of the NFL.

Is infuriating
Not that I am stumping for Steinbrenner to get in

Because his legacy is decidedly mixed....but how exactly does Selig merit induction over him?

I hope he would make the same comments re: Bonds and Clemens and Rodriguez. Even with PEDs, Ortiz is not on the same level as any of those players.
Fame includes infamy

And the HOF can include a used car salesman.

Now there's a very good reason to not waste any time visiting Cooperstown.

No reason for Selig to be in the HoF

His tenure is an embarrassment to baseball.
Terrific column indeed.

And no truer line than this:

"Ultimately, PED moralism only extends as far as the popularity of the person in question. Ortiz is widely adored, while the obnoxious Bonds, surly Clemens, and pathologically needy A-Rod are loathed."

Honestly, if I was a HOF-worthy baseball player, I'd make a public statement right now that I'd not accept a HOF election, at least not until they clean up this corrupt, secretive, crony-based and innuendo-driven selection process. I mean, get the damn sportswriters out of it, for starters. Of all the groups connected to the sport, they're the one with the least integrity
Soo.. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Rodriguez & Clemens
