Landon Collins: We're not done

EAST RUTHERFORD – Landon Collins understands why some might predict the demise of the Giants as playoff contenders now that Jason Pierre-Paul has been lost for the rest of the regular season following surgery to repair his core muscle injury.

His response: not so fast.

“We’re not done. Trust me on that,” Collins told The Record after practice Wednesday. “JPP is one of the best players on the defense, one of the best players on the team, but you don’t stop playing just because you lose a player like that. We have other players on this team. We all need to step up.

“It’s not a matter of giving up now. It’s a matter of doing more and fighting even harder, and I still believe in this team, I absolutely do.”

Collins on Giant loss of JPP: We're not done - ( New Window )
Like that he is emerging as a leader

But never did understand the refrain, "We all need to do more, play harder, in response to losing a teammate to injury.

I know how it s meaning, but the implica is they haven t been giving max effort to now.

No, the implication is that despite the effort they've given, they now need to do even more to overcome the loss of one of their best players.
Demise talk is because the offense is putrid...

Nobody can reasonably expect the Giants to go anywhere until the offense stops killing their chances. They've gone from ineffective the first 7 games to downright putrid. Therein lies the demise talk. They haven't scored 30 pts all year. They barely cross midfield by the middle of the second quarter. They have no running game (and haven't since 2008), no TEs worth paying, no fullback, and really only one weapon. How in hell does that add up to a reasonable expectation of them advancing?

The statement is uttered by every team when they lose a key player. Nothing to do with playing hard previous to the loss. It's about, "let's everyone rally to fill the VACUUM."
Am I the only one that thinks

The play calling is more the issue than the ability? If Eli were under center more and maybe gave a Pro Set or 2 TE set a little more maybe we could run the ball a little better. The 3 WR is over used and running ball out of this set has produced too many negative plays, especially on 1st down.

I believe this team can win without JPP but the offense can help by scoring and possessing the ball more.
I think our problem is play calling (and design), too.
CT Charlie : 12/8/2016 8:15 am : link
Maybe 40% on Eli, 60% onMcAdoo. But I believe the loss of JPP is huge. Before this, I thought we had a good chance of going 2-2. Now, unless the offense turns things around, we'll do well to go 1-3.

Collins Talk is Real
NJLCO : 12/8/2016 8:32 am : link
If anyone on this team can talk it is Collins.

There are enough leaders on this D including Collins, Snacks, OV, and DRC. They play their game and we are solid on D. I thought Casillas played poorly last Sunday. He needs to step up for sure this week. We need to force them into a passing game.
Man I really love the character of the players on this

defense this year. IMO, they're going to come out fighting this Sunday. Will it be enough? I'm not sure, but it could be enough to at least keep things close into the 4th and then anything can happen.

I also think they'll be pumped, regardless of it being Dallas, because they are playing the top team in the league.
I guess

my point is: so often athletes/coaches utter "clichés"
for certain situations that have implied other meanings.

I'm in a profession where effective communication is essential, so: I notice things like this. Not a big deal, not a deal at all, I knew what Collins meant.

Ryan: Put me in the camp of it's a lack of talent, especially on the offensive line. I will repeat what I've written here before: Phil Simms stated, "There is no way to overcome bad "O" line play".....he's right.

You are getting 100% from your best 11 guys. That produces a certain level of play.it does not matter how good or bad they rank, just that they are giving 100% of their combined ability. A player gets hurt who has no equal to replace him. The new guy plays 100% and so do the other 10, they are giving the same effort, but the quality is likely to decline because they no longer have the same overall talent. "we all need to do more, play harder" To maintain the level of play they had. To compensate for the talent gap between the injured player and his replacement. Whether or not that is possible doesn't matter. We'd like to think it's not because that means we are getting 100%. Even if they can't be better doesn't mean they shouldn't try. Saying it doesn't mean they aren't doing their best. Of course, other factors like play calling and cohesion can also affect play in good or bad ways.the defense could be better with less talent. It could also just be a compliment to the fallen team mate. Just my thoughts on it.

Guys can always improve their game

The commitment to studying more film, getting enough rest, actively stepping up to participate in meetings, etc... needs to all be reestablished if the team is going to have a chance to compensate for the loss of JPP. You can give 100% every day and never improve if you don't constantly modify what you are doing and how you go about your business.
