Are you sure? The Reds aren't even trying to compete this year and are going to lose 100 games. Why not give up a roster spot, in a year you are tanking anyway, to gain a nice prospect who might be good by the time actually competes again. Seems savvy and a bit Sam Hinkieish IMO.

They selected a second C in Stuart Turner so maybe one gets flipped to another team or both will compete for backup C job and loser goes back to old team

He was traded to the Padres but yeah he's not sticking. He's played 40 games above Staten Island and has a career .686 OPS. It would be beyond unusual for a guy to stick an entire season on a 25 man roster after 40 unimpressive (he hit... .230) A ball-games. He's basically be skipping 4 levels having conquered none. Fans love the concept but it literally "never" actually happens. Click the link and see what I mean Link - ( New Window )
me amend that statement... there is a chance the Padres trade to keep him which would allow them to send him down to the minors, that scenario is "possible", a full season on the 25 man roster, bad team or not would be something that really never, ever happens outside of something like Josh Hamilton (but Hamilton had actually shown an ability to hit before he walked away from the game.. + was the #1 overall pick in the draft)
But last year, there actually were at least two deals for just $1. Often, such moves are done as a courtesy.
The Mets paid San Diego a dollar on May 28 for first baseman James Loney, who was stuck in Triple-A for the Padres but had a chance to play regularly in New York.
Alderson acknowledged Wednesday that the Mets' payroll, which is hovering around $150 million, is currently an "issue" and will have to go down. The Mets are unlikely to add payroll before moving some dollars, though Alderson insisted that his primary motivation for trading an outfielder is concern over playing time, not finances.

Why is payroll an issue? Attendance was great last year and tickets aren't cheap. Team should be doing everything they can to win a world series.
If that's the case then qualifying Walker was stupid
that was a big market move for a team that's on a budget. JMO but coming off injury there's no guarantee he's as good as he was last year, and for the 17M he's making that could have been more aggressively in play for 2 players that would have filled bigger needs (Ramos + Ziegler or Holland + Blevins, as examples).

and really optimistic article on Stephen Matz linked below.
"So lets sum this up: Matz had Tommy John Surgery in 2010, a partially torn lat in 2015, a problematic bone spur in mid 2016, and then finally shoulder impingement to finish 2016. In between these four injuries, he has been an elite pitcher. Low ERA, low FIP, respectable strikeouts, few walks, and weak contact. Injury is his one and only bugaboo up to this point. That said, he had surgery this offseason to remove his bone spur, and all reports to date have stated the surgery has been a success. Im not a doctor, but from what I understand, shoulder impingement is often caused by trapezius muscles being too strong, and considering Matz history with muscle problems in his back, perhaps these issues are related. If that is the case, hopefully this latest round of treatment will finally cure that problem." http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/91515-2/ - ( New Window )

Sucks. It's nice that payroll is back in the vicinity where it should be, but when you're this close to being a contender, now is a really bad time to penny pinch.
Wish we had more takers on Bruce. Doesn't sound like there's much of a market. I also agree that qualifying Walker was a bad idea if we were going to hit a threshold where we have to clear salary before we can add any more.
that's a great signing. Cubs are really solidifying themselves. I stand by what I said prior to the winter meetings when I said locking down Cespedes was 90% of our offseason being a success, it is, but it's enormously frustrating that we pinch pennies other places. Bring Blevins back, add someone else with closing experience like Ziegler, and get whatever you can for Bruce once the smoke clears.
When he counts the payroll, what I assume he is saying is after going through the massive process of resigning and keeping existing roster players etc, the amount is going to end up at least 15 mil more than last year. The team's priority is to sign as many of the staff as possible, ideally all of them.
Was expected. Not much you can do about it. Webb is going to get taken as well. At least they get a pick though.
If rosters are expanded that would give more of a chance to gamble on a Rule V guy with upside
I had to look him up, a 5' 7" 210 pound pitcher? LOL, sounds funny, like a Bartolo Colon mini-me.

Teams took more lower level long shots than usual. Interesting.

Roster expansion was not agreed to in the new CBA. Still 25 April to Aug 31st and 40 Sept 1st on...
Seriously, got a mid-season promotion to LOW-A.

Sounds like Cubs are close to a one-year deal with Koji Uehara in the $6 million range.
I'll take the over on the "82-84" win projection he cited for the Mets.

Great deal if true. Embarrassing that we have to cut money before being able to make similar moves.

#Nats have made offer to Jansen, met with #Rays about Colome, #WhiteSox about Robertson, per sources:
