Eli was excellent today

hitdog42 : 1/8/2017 8:11 pm
On a positive note he showed he still has it for another playoff push-
Get healthy and get 3 new offensive faces (tackle te and wr) and he showed today he has the goods to get it done.

Well played today 10... you got us going early and the wr let us down when we had a shot to get ahead.

Eli's postseason record
SHO'NUFF : 1/8/2017 9:03 pm : link
just took a hit, though.
He sure did
HBart : 1/8/2017 9:06 pm : link
If Odell was the Odell we saw all year, we'd still have lost, but only because of our horrific ST play and their excellent ST play.

Today perpetuates the book on Eli: he has another level, where he plays as well as an pocket passer, that he can take it to - and often does in big games.
Eli was decent today....
Simms11 : 1/8/2017 9:08 pm : link
It is comforting to see that, but I think he needs to be surrounded with better talent for this team to win these kind of games. The fact that we couldn't even score 30 points or more in any game that's year is an indictment of the offense. Eli still has the ability to get the ball there. He looks like he's got at least 2 more years left in him. He MUST be surrounded with better talent and the Oline needs to get much, much better for him as well.
Plenty of time to criticize Eli this past season
mdc1 : 1/8/2017 9:11 pm : link
but today was not one of them.
He played well

Ultimately the dropped passes were momentum killers.
The story has always been,

get Eli into the playoffs and he'll make the magic happen. Eli played well today, but no magic.
He was okay

I have a different definition of excellent than the OP (watch Brady next weekend or Rodgers second half without his best player against a good defense again today for that definition)

I know the story line will be that OBJ dropped 3-4 balls - truth is he had one bad miss and the rest would have been sensational catches that he sometimes makes because he's elite but didn't today and given how open he was on most of them it's a shame the ball wasn't better placed
I ve said this all year
joeinpa : 1/8/2017 9:23 pm : link
Eli is not now nor has he ever been athletic enough to play behind this type of offensive line.

Eli can still deliver the goods, but he needs more help
Eli wasn't the problem today

Missed a few but played as best he could with this group, whom had their troubles.

Why am I not surprised you chimed in with this shit...? Unlike those other QB's Eli has zero margin for error...Ben threw 2 ints and won in a blowout and Wilson had a RB gain 160 yards...Brady has the best defense in the league as well as a top 7 rushing attack...

The touchdown was an easy one. I mean come on, lets not act like he didnt get two hands on the ball. He also fucked up a hot route in the middle of the game and had a few 1 on 1 opportunities to get open.

Eli gave him many chances to to make plays. He made ZERO.
Eli played well today
Les in TO : 1/8/2017 9:33 pm : link
Drops were horrific. Special teams gave him crappy field position
Eli played well.
madgiantscow009 : 1/8/2017 9:34 pm : link
Our bozo super star came up small and Ben McAdoo was too timid in his play calling all season.

Defense played great until the end and then it came apart in no small part to the offense not doing enough.
No he wasn't

A different game. Eli did not have a particularly good game, IMHO.
reading these posts from people saying
dep026 : 1/8/2017 9:39 pm : link
he didnt play well yet alone is great is really amazing.

our two best receivers were tye and king. SS dropped some big time passes. Cruz got as much seperation as a fat kid does on a vertical jump from the ground. Beckham probably had the worst game of his life. We couldnt run. And Flowers sucked again.

But other than that, Eli was awful.

Agreed. Thirty five is not thirty or twenty five. If you want a few more years of top play from Eli, protect him from getting hit. That should be doable since the defense is pretty set.
Eli played a very good game
mfsd : 1/8/2017 9:41 pm : link
For all of you who disagree, name the bad plays he made. I can think of maybe one, the throw that was almost picked where Shep broke it up. Maybe he overthrew OBJ a bit on the deep sideline route, but Beckham still has to catch that

Eli's teammates let him down today.

As for some of the questionable play calls, we may never know if that was more on McAdoo, or Eli with some bad audibles, so that criticism could be fair (for example, the awful run to Rainey on 3rd and 1)
.
Danny Kanell : 1/8/2017 10:01 pm : link
I thought Eli played his best half of the season in the first half. And that shows how much work needs to be done to build this offense.

The 2nd half, the balloon popped. I wouldn't put too much stock in it going forward. Everything fell apart.

I haven't worried about Eli in a very long time
trueblueinpw : 1/8/2017 10:30 pm : link
He's a winner, always has been. He's got very little to work with on the offense. The line isn't very good but let's not stop there. Tye is our best TE and he's a nice story from Stony Brook and all, but how many other NFL teams does he even make? Our "star" WR had how many yards today? Shep had a very nice rookie campaign, I'm not worried about him either. Not much from the RB position, need major upgrades. And the play calling and game plans this year were really not very good at all. Eli's not the problem with the Giants offense.

We all love Eli but I have a hard time looking at the first obj touchdown miss saying 'how did he drop that'? The ball was overthrown... Obj accelerated as not many can to get outstretched fingers on it.... Doesn't by any means make the catch routine.

Shepard for sure dropped a nice throw after that though.

Bottom line the offense scored just 13 points against a crap defense today. So 'excellent' doesn't describe anyone's play today offensively.

Sorry if a guy in section 332 nosebleeds who I've never heard of gets butt hurt over that.

the TD to OBJ
dep026 : 1/8/2017 10:36 pm : link
was not overthrown. Not even the slightest. He had to reach for it but got two hands on it easily. A catch he makes 99 out of 100 times.

One thing to note. Aikman said on the first couple possessions, GB played a lot of single high man and blitzed Eli. Right around the 2nd corner, they went back to traditional cover 2, and out offense looked like - well our offense.

Good one!!
Eli was good enough to win today.
Crispino : 1/8/2017 10:47 pm : link
He was saddled with bad field position, an mediocre running game, and receivers who turned good passes into shit. The protection disintegrated as the game went on. Eli is way down on the list as to why we lost this game. Way down.

Rodgers played excellent
xman : 1/10/2017 6:49 pm : link
Eli played like a dozen other QB's would play. Lets stop the blind homerism and lowering the bar.
when the Packers
PaulBlakeTSU : 1/10/2017 7:08 pm : link
were in man, Eli was picking them apart, but his receivers couldn't catch a thing.

When the Packers switched back to cover 2, like every team has played us this year, the offense reverted to what it was all season-- a team that can't run against a defense allowing us to run, a O-line that can't pass protect to save its life, and a stable of tiny receivers and tight ends who can't win fights in traffic outside of one superstar.
We

Yes in fact his OL is probably the best in the legue this year and his WR corps is probably top 5. Doesnt take anything away from Rodgers but he does have an excellent OL and WRs.

OOPS!
Is that based on PFF or your own opinion regarding their OL?

Actually, PFF has their OL I believe ranked #1 or 2 with 3 of their players ranked in the top 3 at their position.

OOPS x2.
And where does PFF rate Eli
xman : 1/15/2017 3:34 pm : link
relative to Rodgers? OOPS
Truth be told PFF ranks GB OL
xman : 1/15/2017 10:48 pm : link
7th in the league. Close enough to your belief of 1st or 2nd. But as far as QB's go they rank Eli at 24th . Wow that is bordering on terrible.

I would speculate that if Eli was behind the GB offense they would lose. Likewise put Rodgers behind our offense and we are SB bound.

Screw PFF but I can see that Eli is no longer one of the better QB's in the league. Its not even close.
You can speculate anything you want
dep026 : 1/15/2017 10:53 pm : link
no one said Eli was better than Rodgers. But your statement of GB not having a good OL or skilled players was just totally false.

OOPS x 3.
Actually GBs OL came in 5th
dep026 : 1/15/2017 10:58 pm : link
oops x4.

Giants? 20th with two of the worst tackles in all of football. I am sure Rodgers would love holding the ball knowing he is going to get hit on both sides.
Time to move on?
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/15/2017 11:03 pm : link
And if you don't like Eli imagine have Smith as your QB
If you look a the total season rankings of PFF
xman : 1/16/2017 12:15 am : link
it states GB's OL was 7th over all not 5th. If you want to go by pass blocking only then be clearer. But you come of as being disingenuous misquoting stats a few times here so you can go OOPS.

The real issue is what type of QB is Eli at this stage of his career. You threw PFF into the mix talking about OL rankings . Yes they rated GB OL better then I would have expected so take a bow with resounding applause. But it also clearly ranks Eli as a bottom tier QB at 24th . So do you cherry pick here and be a blind homer or face the music that your favorite Giant has jumped the shark?

FINAl OL rankings - ( New Window )
My apologies as you are right about the OL rankings by PFF they are ,
xman : 1/16/2017 4:24 pm : link
5th and not ranked 7th but certainly not #1.

There are plenty of other playoff bound teams with worse ranked PFF OL then the Giants.( Seattle Minn Miami). Plus another few playoff teams with almost identical OL rankings with the Giants.( Detroit houston ). Is this a credit to the other QB's or to ELi? Neither?

In fairness there were also higher ranked OL that never made the playoffs . So is this a credit to Eli?

Since PF has become our reference notice Eli is ranked around 24th by PFF even lower then our OL.

PFF has good and bad points. I think certain QB's make an OL look better because a combination of feet vision arm and knowing when to hold and when to fold inside the pocket . How does PF account for that?

This years best QB's are going deep in the playoffs and haver some of the better PFF OL . So which came first the chicken or the egg?
