Comp Picks

rasbutant : 1/11/2017 10:49 am
Giants free agent haul nets other teams two 3rd round picks and one 4th round pick. Giants obviously don't get any picks.

Interesting that

It's mostly AFC teams!

Take away LA and Seattle and its almost all AFC.

Absolutely. The Giants did not lose any picks by signing those 3 and we went from one of the worst D's to one of the best.
Can anyone explain how this works?
est1986 : 1/11/2017 11:46 am : link
Thought we would get something for Ayers and Prince? Is it because we replaced them that we don't get anything?
Because didn't Miami replace OV with Mario Williams

Did that count? Williams was replaced on the bench.

Williams was released by Buffalo, so he doesn't count in the formula. Only players who's contract ran out are counted.
If there are nine comp picks in the 4th round...
Milton : 1/11/2017 11:54 am : link
...the Giants 4th round pick moves from the 23rd pick in the 4th round to the 41st pick in the 4th round. So the headset gaffe cost the Giants 18 spots. Not happy about it, but what are you gonna do.....

I believe there is a limit of 12 spots.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that.
this is from an article in the Post ...
Mike in St. Louis : 1/11/2017 12:40 pm : link
but the max of 12 doesn't make sense? how was that calculated?

"The Giants’ fourth-round pick now will come after all the compensatory picks in the round, a drop of a maximum of 12 spots."

We would otherwise be at 23 in the round. We would drop 9 spots just if we were pushed back to the end of the regular picks?

Also don't forget the Patriots lost their 4th round pick.

Hmmm...the way it's worded, it kind of sounds like he's saying that there will be a maximum of 12 comp picks in round 4. Like it's just some kind of additional fact that Schwartz is informing us of. Otherwise why not give the exact wording of the penalty as laid out by the NFL?
Damn
mrvax : 1/11/2017 2:54 pm : link
Sounds to me like we take pick 23, move it to 31 (Pats don't pick 4th round) then add 12 comps. We pick at #43 in the 4th. Similar to moving our 4th rounder to the 5th round at pick #11.

That's exactly what it sounds like to me.

If the projections are correct for the 3rd and 4th round comp picks
Milton : 1/11/2017 4:59 pm : link
The Giants 4th round pick would move from the 128th pick to the 145th pick. According to the trade value chart that is the equivalent of losing the 202nd pick in the draft. When all of the comp picks are tacked on to each round, the 202nd pick comes out to being a late 6th round pick.

In last year's draft, this is what happened between picks 128 and 145...

4 128 Arizona Cardinals Evan Boehm C Missouri SEC
4 129 Cleveland Browns Derrick Kindred S TCU Big 12 from Carolina [R4 - 13]
4 130 Baltimore Ravens Alex Lewis OT Nebraska Big Ten from Denver [R4 - 14]

4* 136 Denver Broncos Devontae Booker RB Utah Pac-12
4* 137 Green Bay Packers Dean Lowry DE Northwestern Big Ten
4* 138 Cleveland Browns Seth DeValve TE Princeton Ivy
4* 139 Buffalo Bills Cardale Jones QB Ohio State Big Ten Extra compensatory pick authorized by NFLMC and NFLPA[3][4]

5 141 Carolina Panthers Zack Sanchez CB Oklahoma Big 12 from Cleveland [R5 - 1]
5 142 San Francisco 49ers Ronald Blair DE Appalachian State Sun Belt from San Diego [R5 - 2]
5 143 Oakland Raiders DeAndre Washington RB Texas Tech Big 12 from Dallas [R5 - 3]
5 144 Denver Broncos Connor McGovern G Missouri SEC from Baltimore [R5 - 4]
5 145 San Francisco 49ers John Theus OT Georgia
My understanding was that we were moving back to the end of the round.
Dan in the Springs : 1/11/2017 5:27 pm : link
but that the amount of movement was capped at 12 spots. That would make sense, since we were in the playoffs which 12 teams qualify for, so we would move back no more than 12 spots.

So, if we had the 128th pick we would end up at the 140th pick.

It seems clear from the language I've read that this is the case. I'll try and find a clearer description of the actual penalty, but we'll know soon enough either way.
Okay, following some research...
Dan in the Springs : 1/11/2017 5:40 pm : link
the NFL hasn't officially announced any penalties for the Giants use of illegal walkie-talkies. The news of the penalties was leaked by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

All he said was that we'd be moved to the back end of the round, after all the compensatory pick. The rest of the details sound like speculation, so I rescind my former opinion. I think we're going all the way to the back.

Then again - the NFL will have to make a formal announcement soon given that the compensatory picks have now been announced. I expect this is why an official announcement was delayed.

The comp picks haven't been formally announced and won't be for some time. This is just someone's projections based on historical data. It's probably pretty accurate.

I couldn't find any official announcement via the regular NFL channels. The closest I could find was a leak via NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. I'd say if the leak is reported on the NFL Network that it's basically going to happen, but usually there's a communication for these things where the actions leading to the discipline and the punishments are clearly spelled out. The NFL hasn't issued one of these on the Giants, so I don't consider it truly official.

Here's an example from this September.
Seattle losing its fifth round pick next year and a week of OTA's - from NFL Communications. - ( New Window )
i'd like to use this thread as a reminder
djm : 1/12/2017 10:40 am : link
that Mario Williams either sucked on a terrible level or didn't play at all for Miami this season. He was a dog in Buffalo during 2015 and even worse for Miami. Many killed Reese for not signing Williams over Vernon. Now you know why.

Thanks, tony71, that's good news if Garafalo is correct. At least he worded it very clearly, compared to Schwartz's wording.

Thanks - that's pretty much what I remembered reading. I hope he is correct, as it might mean a difference of 5 or so extra picks.
