NFT: Panthers at Islanders, 7pm Game Thread

Whaddya know, more off days interrupted by brief bouts of hockey...or whatever the Islanders are calling what they're doing on the ice lately.

Greiss in net, Pelech in for Hamonic (day-to-day after the knee-on-knee the other night), same lineup otherwise. I looked up the French translation for Beauviller and ironically, it's "unwarranted healthy scratch".

News of late: JT is an All-Star (duh). Thomas Greiss, despite the iffy nature of the skaters in front of him, is is 3-0-2 in his last five games with a .955 SV% (171 saves on 179 shots) and 6-1-2 in his last nine games. On the season, he's 9-5-2 with a 2.31 goals-against average and a career-best .927 SV%.

Also, the reporter vultures always circle the rotting carcasses of teams, so naturally, there's been much (Canadian) media chirping, again, about how JT is out the door. He responded to Newsday yesterday:
Quote:
I think for myself, I've always shown and talked about my commitment here. Wanting to have success here and keep building on some of the good things we've done. Obviously, this [low] point has been disappointing. For myself, I know that I have not been to the level that I expect of myself and the standard that I want to be at, he said. I keep trying to improve and get better. I need to be counted on more, to be more of a difference-maker. I think a lot of guys in the room on a daily basis are trying to stay positive, keep the focus on the right things, he said. It obviously can be very frustrating at times with the way things have gone to this point in the season, but it's important just to keep having a good attitude, keep working hard together, having fun, whether it's practice, showing up to the rink on game days in the morning and just sticking together, knowing there's a long way to go.

At 26 and in his eighth season with the Islanders, Tavares apparently isn't going anywhere, saying, "I think I've stated enough how much I enjoy being here."
On that note, MiLB gets to add to his doll figurine collection tonight with tonight's game being "Starting Lineup John Tavares Figurine Night".

2 final notes: if you can watch the game, do so. Tonight the Isles are honoring Jiggs McDonald for 50 years in broadcasting. He'll be calling what is likely his final Islanders game tonight. He's a part of all of us. And finally, a somber stick tap in honor of Rangers superfan Steven McDonald, the courageous NYPD veteran, who passed away yesterday at 59.

Let's Go Islanders.
God Damn right :)

I think I can get out of work a little early today. I'm gonna get over there soon and see if I can get any facetime with Jiggs with Shannon prior to the game.

10 points out with 5 games in hand.

I'm gonna keep beating that drum, Metnut. I can't help it.

I figured you'd like the callout in the OP, you cheeky monkey. But be careful about the optimism. There are folks on these threads that'll tell you what your opinion should be, Mike. You're not a real fan unless you've gone completely negative and hate the team, you know.
Haha, I hear you, man.
Mike in Long Beach : 1/11/2017 4:15 pm : link
I've honestly been pretty tuned out on the game threads lately for my own sanity. I'm such a big fan and it's just too exhausting to dissect every game knowing that every dissection is going to reveal more and more upsetting details. If I had to, honestly, I'd most likely exhibit the same negativity. I watch almost all of them still, but I can't get worked up over the nuanced awfulness. Like Beauvillier not playing tonight? I just can't with that stuff. Not until the team at least gets back into the mix.

Hey, I was just making a suggestion for your own sanity :)

Was frustrating to lose two games to terrible teams over the weekend but at least they got away with a few points. It's amazing that somehow Strome can't get more than 3 minutes of ice time in the third period last game. Even when he's playing great, Capuono seems ready to bury him as soon as he gets a chance. Watch him bench Strome when Beuvillier finally gets back in the lineup.
Same boat here

I've been trying to minimize the "noise" and just watch the games. They're frustrating enough, and going down the rabbit hole of "FIAR EVRY1", "CAP SUX", "GARF BARF", etc., is so emotionally counterproductive. I'm just gonna enjoy the Jiggs celebration tonight and hope to see bits of improvement incrementally heading into the offseason which is where we'll (hopefully) see the necessary changes made.
Nice shout out to Steven McDonald

Always the classy one P!

I didn't realize this will by Jiggs' last call. I'll make sure to tune in later. Hope the blood pressure stays under control... Beer me!!
Oh yeah, forgot one other item: no black unis next season
pganut : 1/11/2017 6:33 pm : link
All NHL teams will be permitted to have only home and road jerseys next season as Adidas takes over for Reebok as the official outfitter of NHL uniforms. There will be no third jerseys, in order to make the initial implementation of new sweaters easier.

Isles will keep it to the home blues and away whites. I don't think this means 3rd jerseys are gone forever, but they won't be around next season.

Hey fellas
Drewcon40 : 1/11/2017 8:02 pm : link
Hope you guys are having a great new year (sans for Sunday of course)

Pg you and the guys on this board are always class acts - nice of you to mention Steven McDonald. Also thanks for the mention of Jiggs, I'm watching feeling nostalgic- even as a Ranger fan.

Speaking of nostalgia - if they are only going with 2 uniforms , why not white at home?

As I hit "submit", the Kenny Morrow goal is being played.

Cheers fellas.
Oh good, more defensive scoring

As that goes in off Seidenberg's shin and past Greiss. Shame, because Isles have dominated since the 10 minute mark in the first.

I like the idea of whites at home. The spirit of that was so that you'd get to see the visiting team's colors, especially the ones you get to see less frequently like the West teams. Now that the home teams show their colors, every visiting looks predominantly the same in white. I'm not sure I really like it. Like when the Habs come in, I want to see their red sweaters. In the AHL, teams wear their white jerseys for half the season at home and then switch to the darks for the second half. I think that's something I could live with if the NHL goes there.
I wish I could say I'm surprised
pganut : 1/11/2017 8:48 pm : link
After looking good in the first period, and for the first minute or so of the second, the Isles looked thoroughly disinterested. Outshot 16-8 there. On the infrequent offensive flurries, the Islanders find a way to get their sticks tied up or get nudged off the puck at critical scoring chance opportunities. And on the rarer occasion they get shots at open nets, they misfire or miss the net completely (Kulie, lookin' at you, pal). Most of our passes are broken up or intercepted, so please stop finessing things and make a decisive, crisp pass.

And for the love of Pete, if you're not gonna win it for yourselves, give Jiggs something to smile about tonight. The man deserves it.
Why do I torture myself

Watching this garbage.

I'm glad Quine is playing. He's the future.
And with their first pick in the draft
feelflows : 1/11/2017 9:40 pm : link
The New York Islanders select some talented kid they will mishandle to mediocracy or bench.

Transaction : Islanders claim another AHLer who will play every game in the NHL.

This team is so unprepared, with or without the puck
pganut : 1/11/2017 9:44 pm : link
With the puck, pressure them, turnover. Without the puck, never in the right areas for rebounds, stick never in the right place. Flat-footed defensively. Poor angles. Passes into defenders' skates when there's plenty of opportunity to make a quality play. Passing up shots in great position to make that one more (unnecessary) pass.

These things aren't due to players at the professional level losing skill. These are things due to zero confidence. And you have to think that's because the coaching and the system have sucked the life out of the team. 3rd consecutive game scoring one goal. A "B" effort wins this game easily. Instead, the no-show again costs them, as it will against any team at the NHL level.
It's like every time Tavares

Reiterates he wants to stay the Isles brass is like "oh yeah? How about.....now!" Hopefully, the owners will find their team president soon so we can start looking forward to the restructure.
Hamonic to IR retro to 1/7
pganut : 1/12/2017 12:22 pm : link
Mayfield called up for the road trip. Before anyone wonders, Pulock has been out the last week and change with an upper body injury. He's now back practicing but hasn't been cleared for game action just yet. Looking at the BPT notes, he should be back soon.

If Pulock doesn't end up playing a certain amount of games this year, will they have to protect him from the expansion draft?
Jay
pganut : 1/12/2017 2:20 pm : link
Yes. Games at the NHL level don't count towards expansion draft protection; that's more important for burning an accrued year off an entry level contract (ex: Beauvillier). It's having a professional contract that determines the need to be protected and having an AHL deal is considered a professional contract. Pulock absolutely would need to be protected.

Should've moved him when had the chance. He is another middle of the road guy.
