NFT: Charleston SC recommendations needed

Dunedin81 : 1/11/2017 10:27 pm
My wife and I are heading down for the marathon and the long weekend, sans children. Any restaurants we shouldn't miss?
We'd stayed at the Charleston Place Hotel

And enjoy food, but are not "foodies" by any real stretch. The Charleston Grill is a AAA Four Diamond restaurant. If you're a gourmand, you'll like it. I'm not. But I particularly liked Jestine's Kitchen (fried pork chop, oh my) and Magnolias.
I also enjoyed Magnolia's.

Love Charleston

Was there in September, going back in two weeks. Definites for me are Husk, Eli's Table, Magnolia's, Poogan's Smokehouse. The Griffin is also real cool and if you're into breweries I'd recommend Holy City. You'll need a car or Uber/taxi to get there but it's a cool place with very good beer.
I second Charleston Grill.

Fancy but surprisingly good. Not usually my style.

Great pizza spot is Monza. Their pasta is bomb also.

Fish is a great starting spot for cocktails and apps. Staff is super friendly.

Hominy Grill is a great spot as well.

I intend to move to Charleston in the next couple years. Me and my wife love it. Every time we visit it's unbelievably depressing when we are packing the car to leave.

Have fun and good luck on your run.

you're welcome
Husk is great for cocktails

It's a little overrated for Dinner. Magnolia, High Cotton, and the restaraunt in the Panthers Inn are outstanding. Poogan's Porch is good for lunch o brunch on a weekend.
Husk seems to be booked through the weekend...

Thanks for the rest of the recommendations, will run them by the boss and see what she thinks.
Running the marathon? Nice. I ran the half

back in '15.

As for recommendations...

Magnolias is good, though it's a little high class.Edmund's Oast is a nice spot too with a good outdoor patio. Holy City Brewery is a blast. I could live there. I also enjoyed Bay Street Biergarten. That's a little off the beaten path though.

Have fun. Charleston is one of my favorite cities. I'd love to live there.

recos are good, Charleston Place the classiest and a City standard bearer. And its grill excellent.

In addition to others above, FIG was our favorite restaurant, a Charleston leader in farm-to-table, and the food is terrific, focus on locally caught fish, game, and pork dishes.
This is an off the wall question

but someone mentioned their plans to move there and, for us we are not there but looking at the retirement horizon. Does anyone have a feel for what living in Charleston and environs would be like for someone who might be a little...um, atypical in flesh tone and eye shape? I normally wouldn't think about such things but I met someone a couple years ago who had just moved from there and she sort of scared me into striking it off our list.
Charleston Restaurant week
emcca005 : 1/12/2017 8:23 am : link
runs through the 22nd of January, but the busiest day for all the restaurants is the day of the marathon so make sure to make reservations. Anything on King or Market street will do in a pinch but I'm partial to Basil which is right on King Street. You can always leave downtown and hit up Johns Island for the Tattooed Moose or the Loophole as well. Some of the best restaurants in the area are in West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, and Summerville, so it really depends on how much time you've got and what you want to see.

Biergarten, Hominy Grill, Toast, Jestine’s - Casual
Husk, McCrady’s tavern (sister place of Husk) – pricey and foodie

We ate at all of these and had wonderful food. Keep in mind for lunch expect a wait with all of the casual places. Jestine’s line starts ½ hour prior to opening and lasts until they close a lot of the time.

On another note take one of the carriage tours my wife wanted to do it I was not really interested but was very glad I did.
Also to make life and parking easier use Uber or Lyft we used Uber larger profile down there. Parking can be a problem at time and it made our life a little easier.

We stayed at the Grand Bohemian it was nice room’s are spacious and modern, service was very good. They also have a rooftop restaurant and outdoor lounge for drinks and happy hour.

We also did a pub crawl down bay street tons of places for a drink and small bite to eat.

Enjoy the trip.

Been going to Charleston/IOP for vacations for YEARS, and that list is RIGHT ON. Just follow what BB wrote and you won't put a foot wrong.

You're in luck, as Charleston Restaurant Week is happening all month long. Any of the recommendations on this thread are good choices. Pick a major Food Group and you'll have several top places. Seafood, BBQ, even Hamburgers get the full treatment down here. The only one I would caution you on is McCrady's because it is off the charts expensive -- but try Chef Sean Brock's other restaurant Husk for same level of goodness at a more reasonable price.

If the weather's nice, get to one of the rooftop bars for a spectacular sunset -- Stars has an excellent cocktail list and craft beer selection. If Beer is your pleasure, the local Craft Brewers like Holy City or Palmetto Brewery will be glad to oblige.

Staying downtown, that Marriott on Calhoun St has a good rate. Park the car and walk or take that trolley (it's free).

Enjoy your stay !!

Porch...one of the best restaurants i've ever eaten at honestly. Their biscuits will make you want to live there.
Halls Chophouse was very good -

Not sure about Charleston but New Bern is quite progressive

is our home away from home. The names given above are all great. Charleston Grill for cocktails and jazz after dinner is a fav of mine. For dinner it is good as well but its menu is not really low country. They are a sister restaurant to 21 Club in Manhattan. Tell Micky Bubba says hi.

Fleet Landing is a great low country seafood place. Did not see it on the list above.

Really you can walk into most places (this time of year is off season) and you will not be disappointed.
I love Charleston too...

Unfortunately some of the places I liked best are closed now. I didn't read through all the recs on the thread, but I liked:

Hominy Grill for breakfast. Anson and Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) for dinner.

New Bern and Wilmington are both on our list of places to check out as possible retirement locations.

Good luck trying to get into FIG. They open reservations 30 day in advance, and they fill them that day. Your only chance would be to walk in and sit at the bar. I've never been able to get in, but hear it's well worth it.
