Wesseling NFL.com: The harsh truth about Texans' D, Eli Manning's mistakes, more
"The Giants' yacht crew failed Eli
So "Playoff Eli" showed up in Lambeau Field, only to be done in by a drop-plagued wide receiver corps that spent the week partying with Justin Bieber in South Beach instead of properly preparing for the Packers?
Let's clarify a few things.
Eli Manning came out firing in the early minutes, hitting throws he had been missing since Halloween. His receivers did indeed fail him in the first quarter. After dropping a third-and-5 pass in field-goal range, a twisting Odell Beckham couldn't quite corral a 28-yard pass that hit him on the finger tips for a lost touchdown. From the second quarter on, though, it was Eli misfiring as much as his receivers bungling.
While Aaron Rodgers was throwing his receivers open and hitting them in stride for big plays, Eli was throwing behind his targets or hitting the wrong shoulder.
As for Beckham's miserable performance, wouldn't the lingering effects of a potential yacht hangover affect his ability to get open against double coverage as much as -- or even more than -- his ability to make tough catches? I've seen "gunner" coverage at the line of scrimmage four times over the past decade: on Randy Moss, on Calvin Johnson and the time Bill Belichick wallpapered Tony Gonzalez near the end zone. The fourth time was last Sunday, with two Packers cornerbacks sticking Beckham on third down.
What's more credible? Beckham's initial third-down drop got in his head, snowballing over the course of the game as he battled through double coverage? Or he suffered from the first six-day hangover humankind has seen since the Romans over-celebrated during the festival of Bacchus?
Giants fans can caress the fabled notion of "Playoff Eli" if it helps them sleep at night, but that myth ignores a harsher reality:"

Monson PFF: RANKING ALL 32 NFL OFFENSIVE LINES THIS SEASON
"20. New York Giants (20)
Top overall grade: LG Justin Pugh, 85.1 (No. 16)
Top pass-blocking grade: C Weston Richburg, 89.3 (No. 17)
Top run-blocking grade: LG Justin Pugh, 84.9 (No. 15)
The Giants may have fielded the worst pair of tackles in the game this season, but the interior trio was solid, particularly when LG Justin Pugh was in the lineup. Ereck Flowers began the season with three solid games, surrendering just five total QB pressures and no hits or sacks over that time, suggesting that he had turned a corner from his ugly rookie season—but then he went in the tank, and was horrendous down the stretch. After the aforementioned three games, he allowed 54 total QB pressures in his final 13 games, with 10 penalties adding to his woes. On the right side, Bobby Hart surrendered 46 total QB pressures himself, and if anything, those numbers flattered his performance; when he was beaten, it tended to be immediately and result in severe pressure."

Claasen PFF: RANKING ALL 32 NFL SECONDARIES THIS SEASON
"2. New York Giants (8)
Top overall grade: S Landon Collins, 91.7 (No. 3)
Top coverage grade: CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, 90.3 (No. 5)
Top run-defense grade: S Landon Collins, 95.8 (No. 3)
Most snaps: S Landon Collins, 1,176
The Giants’ ranking may feel high after their performance against the Packers in the Wild Card game on Sunday, but they were also without their top-graded cornerback, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who we recently named as PFF’s second-team All-Pro defensive back. Rodgers-Cromartie finished the year as the sixth-ranked corner in the league, but he wasn’t the only Giants DB to play well. In his first year with the team after a big free-agent deal, Janoris Jenkins had by far the best season of his career and also finished among the top 10 cornerbacks in the league. Safety Landon Collins was a revelation in his second year after greatly improving in coverage and establishing himself as one of the best run defenders in the league, which led to his PFF first-team All-Pro selection. The Giants do have some weakness further down the depth chart, though, as we saw against Green Bay when Trevin Wade and rookie Eli Apple were forced into bigger roles."

Gotta believe that's bullshit. We'd be stupid to let him go, there's no other way to put it.
Gotta believe that's bullshit. We'd be stupid to let him go, there's no other way to put it.
I believe a part of this stupidity is that many people including the supposed sports journalism community see the slot corner as " Third Corner " or corner that isnt as important.. yet they somehow dont seem to understand how many teams run three wide.. you need THREE good corners in todays NFL to be successful on defense..
Getting rid of DRC means you now have to get ANOTHER corner who can play the slot AND outsde.. and you lose valuable veteran leadership as well.
The biggest differences are Cruz's age and salary. He had a $2.4 million base salary this season, which is by far the highest of the group. The next highest-paid No. 3 receiver is Miami's Kenny Stills, who earned $1.67 million while recording 42 catches for 726 yards and nine touchdowns.
Cruz is due $7.4 million in guaranteed money next season, which makes him prohibitively expensive as a third option behind Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard, who are both bargains on their rookie contracts. It's obvious that the only way Cruz will be back in 2017 is if he's willing to take a significant pay cut for the second consecutive year.
He's not the same player but he wasn't terrible this season. He was playing out of position and still held his own as the #3.
1 player can improve 2 positions.
You let Cruz go elsewhere to be a slot WR
Quote:
For the life of me, I just don't get the "financial considerations" for DRC. All Pro CB due $6.5M, we have a boatload of cap space, he's well-liked in the lockerroom, he accepted a position shift to the slot, we have arguably the top secondary in football, he knows our complicated scheme - and we're in a hurry to get rid of him?
Gotta believe that's bullshit. We'd be stupid to let him go, there's no other way to put it.

I concur with both of you.
I'll admit I was skeptical of DRC when he first arrived here, not talent wise, but effort wise.
He's been nothing but a fine player, and I thought the talk about this before the season was ridiculous (perhaps that was forcasting into this offseason).
