So far, these playoff games have been a disaster for NFL

Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/15/2017 12:08 am
I would expect some friendly calls for Dallas tomorrow.
if the Texans took advantage of their multiple opportunies tonight..
jnoble : 1/15/2017 12:18 am : link
..and Fuller didn't drop that gimme TD in the endzone, they may have might have pulled off the upset. But noooooo...
Eric, true..

But remember as bad as these games have been, right now the NFL is salivating that they still have Pitt/NE vs GB/Dallas SB possibilities.

Any one of those matchups in the Super Bowl is an interest and ratings bonanza and probably a good game as well.

Bad start, but tomorrow should be a great day and the Super Bowl matchup can be gigantic.

Yup... but I think they need the Dallas-Steelers clash to redeem anything from this year.

I'd like to see the Kansas City Chiefs.

Let Eagles fans watch Andy Reid win the big game in red.

Would also be nice to see Eric Berry win go from cancer survivor to super bowl champion.
Would serve them right

I hope so. I'm sick of the Patriots almost every freakin year and if Dallas makes it, the Dak/Elliot gushing and ass kissing leading up to the game...not even mentioning if they won it....would be too much for me.
I don't like the Packers but I hope they destroy the Cowboys tomorrow
The NFL is taking a hit so far these playoffs games

Would love this matchup. Something rare and unique instead of the usual suspects.
I see Pats-Packers as the ideal Super Bowl matchup...

Tom Brady vs Aaron Rodgers. It doesn't get any better than that and it's the only way these two could ever face each other in a big game.
The super bowl is matchup proof
LatHarv83 : 1/15/2017 1:09 am : link
Every year they set records for viewership. That included a season when the Arizona Cardinals were involved. That included last year when the Carolina panthers were in it. This years super bowl will have more viewers than last year. And next years super bowl will break this years record. That's just how this goes. There is no need to overthink these things and believe the NFL "needs" anything to get a bazillion eyeballs on the first Sunday in February
I put the word need in quotes
LatHarv83 : 1/15/2017 1:12 am : link
And it reads like I was directly replying to jcn56 given his post. I see that now. Didn't intend for that. I was speaking generally to the idea being discussed in the thread
Green Bay v. Kansas City would be great SB
trueblueinpw : 1/15/2017 1:49 am : link
I've always heard these two teams have great fans and owners and they have some history. Anyone but Dallas then anyone but NE.

Been wanting this for years (minus any Giants interests of course). If we can't get a matchup of the best 2 QBs after all this time then my interest definitely wanes.
Give me a Patriots vs Cowboys Final

So you think some league officials will pull the referees aside and tell them to try and fix the game for the Cowboys?

Upside - Dallas is in the Superbowl, a game that will set viewership records with or without them.

Downside - One referee decides to make a fortune and tells the story and the some of those people not only lose their jobs, but may go to jail. Oh, and the league would get a black eye it would never lose.

There is no conspiracy to get the Cowboys in the Superbowl.
Personally I'd like to KC-GB or KC-ATL

Outside of the Giants game, I've watched probably a total of 2 quarters of all the other playoff games. And that was with me planning on doing nothing but watching them last weekend with the snowstorm. It's just not intriguing anymore. I'll probably watch the Cowboy game today but who knows. I don't really care as much as I used to.

Is there a single Steelers or Cowboys fan who would not watch the Super Bowl if their team was not in the game? Of course not. Think about how flawed that reasoning is. The Super Bowl is not like the World Series or the NBA Finals, where the viewership is at least partially tied to the respective markets and fanbases.

Maybe the conference championship games are sensitive to ratings, but not the Super Bowl. Not in the way that the fans of the participating teams has any material effect.

I actually turned off a game and put a movie on yesterday. And unlike previous years, it wasn't because I was sulking because the Giants lost the week before. I was genuinely bored.

I understand what you are saying, but I don't necessarily agree. It's about the perception of the product put on the field. And whether we like it or not, the Cowboys and Steelers are both "America's Teams".

I guarantee you the NFL execs want that game over a KC/Falcons contest.
I'll
Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/15/2017 10:30 am : link
put it in these terms. To this day, I still remember the Steeler-Cowboys match-ups. Many of the other games - including very recent - not so much.
What's the NFL supposed to do?
Sean : 1/15/2017 10:35 am : link
there are ex players that are critical of today's NFL while suing the NFL for unknown risks of head injuries. Since they are trying to make the game safer, the product will change and a lot of people like it less. The new CBA is really hurting the product. But I don't really know what the solution is or how this could be avoided.

One thing I'll say is this- over saturation. The NFL would help itself by getting rid of TNF. No one cares or watches unless their team is playing.

Probably the age you were at the time. People do the same thing with music.
Super Bowl boxes generated more viewers than the game.
Gmen1982 : 1/15/2017 10:56 am : link
People that could couldn't care less will watch because of their numbers in the box pool.
I am pulling for KC to win it all
Hades07 : 1/15/2017 11:05 am : link
Any of the NFC teams would be a good match-up for me.

Atlanta, because it would be fun to see two teams that are not the usual suspects.

GB for the classic match-up that it is.

Cowboys because it would be a fun run up around here. Eagles fans knowing it will be Reid or the Cowboys winning it. Neither a good outcome for them.
If it's Patriots vs cowboys
Clintqb17 : 1/15/2017 11:11 am : link
I probably won't watch it. Seriously it would be first super bowl that I don't watch. Just can't root for either one.
I was lucky enough to be 10-14 when Dallas won in the 90s.
Gmen1982 : 1/15/2017 11:19 am : link
SO it didn't bother me as much as it would now. I know it's gonna happen eventually and I know life will go on. I just don't want to hear from the Dallas fans I know. It doesn't matter that I never talk shit to them when the Giants win. That will be brutal.
still love the game
bc4life : 1/15/2017 11:22 am : link
bigger and faster athletes. some rules and certainly the refs needs adjusting but I still enjoy it.
Watched a little bit of Atlanta/Seattle
ghost718 : 1/15/2017 12:15 pm : link
I figured if the game wasn't good, maybe the Seahawks would start brawling like Major League 2.

But there wasn't a chance I was watching New England and there dumb offense.

Overall the games have been the worst I've ever seen from this league.
Look at the teams:
old man : 1/15/2017 12:21 pm : link
Start w/our own NYFG: an inept O(L) and a D that couldnt find the ball on a HM and effective lost and gave GB 2nd half momentum; a Houston team that won the Division at 9-7, and blew opps to win last night(along w/a ST screwup); a Seattle team running on reputation facing an Atlanta D that showed how to bring it. I think the way the GB and Atlanta Ds played, they should have had to P in a cup.
In any case, we're down to 2 hot teams that might be in final 4, the others played good football much of the season.
Hoping for an ATL/KC SB

The NFL marketing team is very good at what they do - they'll craft a compelling narrative no matter what the matchup. And while I understand your point about the relative strength of those fanbases, I could make just as strong as case for the NFL hoping for a Green Bay vs Kansas City matchup so they can play up the 50th anniversary of SB I.

And the reality is, in terms of ad revenue, those spots are bought and paid for already, regardless of the matchup. There are a lot of times when I wonder if the league hopes for particular outcomes - the Super Bowl matchup isn't one of them.
