I thought about this yesterday after watching Dallas pass rush.
They need a good one and JPP may be it. Carl Banks also mentioned something about it this a.m. on WFAN. What do you guys think?
They are $5M over the projected cap. The final numbers can certainly come in above the level projected by the various cap sites (it did last year by several million). But the Cowboys would have quite a bit of maneuvering to do to fit JPP under (restructures for Frederick/Smith, extend/cut Witten, cut Free, etc). They also have several of their own D starters to re-sign including 3/4s of their starting secondary (Church, Claiborne, Carr).
I'd be more worried about several other teams "stealing" JPP:
Browns - simply due to the astronomical cap space they have. They could easily blow away any FA they want and offer several million more than anyone else.
Bucs - lots of space, team is on the rise
Jags - tons of space, obviously the TC connection
Raiders - D lacks talent outside of Mack, would form an awesome DE pair. SB contender this year if Carr doesn't break his leg so JPP could get paid and have a legit chance at another title.
Obviously many other teams will be interested, but all the above are projected to have >$50M in cap space and the latter 3 are also on the rise.
They can't even afford to keep Leary the OG. Even if they move Romo they still have a huge dead money hit on the cap. They need to address their secondary which I think is a big issue for them more than DL.
I think a team that needs a two way DE and has lots of cap space will go too rich for our blood.
is willing to give a discount,on top of a h-t discount, feeling guilty about 7/4.
The dollar value is the X. Giants would have to hardline at a low number for him to walk.
And Dallas is the wrong part of the south; think reunion.
I can see Atlanta trying to get him to pair with Beasley
Cut Cruz save 7.5 Mil
Cut J.T save 3 Mil
Cut Jennings save 2.5 Mil
Cut Vereen save 3.75 Mil
32.75 Million in cap
Hankins?
OL?
#2 WR?
Rookies/Depth
More cuts, re-works, extensions etc. change everything
I'd be surprised if both Jennings and Vereen are cut. That would leave Perkins, Darkwa and Winn as the only RBs on the roster and while I like Perkins, the other 2 are really 3rd/4th RBs at best. So you'd need to either spend a relatively high (3rd/4th round) pick on another RB or sign another vet which will likely eat up most, if not all, of the savings from cutting the player (or sign a vet and use a pick).
Hankins will be interesting. One thing to keep in mind is the Dallas OL/running game. They signed Snacks because this D was getting gashed by average running games in 2015 and Dallas has arguably the best ground game in the league. So they might not want Bromley/Thomas/draft pick facing off against Zach Martin/Travis Frederick twice a year even with Vernon/Snacks and (hopefully) JPP flanking them.
If they tag him, it will be a bad investment in cap dollars....JPP's sack totals are not that great, and they come in bunches against poor OL's...and there is the question, can he stay on the field?
JPP knows this is his last big contract,,,,,we can't afford him....
...never going to happen. The Giants will do what they need to retain their contractual rights to JPP. Which means applying a tag if a deal doesn't get done. Even if it's a temporary negotiating tactic or a harbinger of a trade to come.
Either way he isn't going to the Cowboys. No way, no how. He'll be re-signed or shipped out of the division.
RE: Jacksonville would most likely be his landing spot
Not that much more relatively speaking. Probably like 600k.
As a player you pay taxes in each state you play games in.
Is 600K not a lot of money anymore, especially to guys with careers of ~10 years max? It's a bullshit hole in the system i wish every league would correct (by adjusting salary caps to reflect cost of living)
And it would make me physically sick
They have some issues to resolve before offering anyone anything.

Absolutely
+1.
If they want to win a championship before Eli is done, retaining JPP is vital.

That would work out just great for them I guess.

Hankins we actually have a shot at meeting in the middle considering his injury problems and talent surrounding him allowing him to succeed IMO.
Tag him and use it as leverage to get a reasonable long term deal or deal him.
Was the question mark confusing?
If you think Chip Kelly isn't a sound mind, when BB picks his brain, then you're obviously not very intelligent.

Absolutely. TC is now the enemy. He's trying to win. I don't blame him.

IMO. Would TC look to outbid NY for his services? Interesting thought.
