Steve Spagnuolo off contract?

Big_Pete : 1/17/2017 2:47 am
Jordan Ranaan reported back in Jan 18 2015 that Steve Spagnuolo signed a two year deal. If that is the case, it means that Spags is coming off contract.

Should we be concerned that another team such as Jacksonville could sign him as their DC? Spags is very loyal to Coughlin and has expressed a desire to be a Head Coach again (which isn't likely at NYG).

What do you think?
Spagnuolo's contract details - ( New Window )
That would be a major fuckup by the Giants
robbieballs2003 : 1/17/2017 5:45 am : link
if he left. Therefore, I don't see that happening. If there was even a remote possibility of him leaving then we should have been all over Wade Phillips.
Yes. He doesn't have a contract.
Diver_Down : 1/17/2017 6:42 am : link
Jax already committed to the DC that was on staff. Many have speculated that Coughlin is doing the hiring of the coaching staff, but with the hiring of Tyrone Wheatley as their RB coach, it is apparent that Marrone is assembling his own staff. If Tom was doing the hiring, I would have expected Jax's current DC to be let go and Spags picked up in a heartbeat.
Spags was at The Villanova-Seton Hall game last night....

on Villanova campus. Not sure what his connection would be to be at that game.
Maybe he is there checking out the DE on Villanova?

I think he's a good coach but that D is loaded with talent. He is not THE reason they had a great year. It's not like he has proven he get key stops with subpart talent.

Think a read and react shmuck would have pressured Dallas or just sit back in hopes the young QB makes a mistake?

Doesn't every defense and offense react to reads

If Spags is so great why did almost every Giants fan on the planet want him gone last year?

That is a bold assumption. I didn't want him gone.

I hope he stays and I'm sure he will. His recent history has been a disaster and it's not like coaching the $200M defense is going to make him a hot commodity.

I just find it funny how nearly every Giant fan on the planet wanted him fired last year.

This is some pretty heavy duty trolling or a wild memory failure, because BBI was at worst evenly split. Few were expecting anything with the talent we had on D.
I didn't know Spags lives in Philly.
Crispino : 1/17/2017 8:52 am : link
I always assumed that once you leave Philly, you stay away. Especially if you have the means to live anywhere you want.

I mean, we have a lot of really big overreactors and people who cant connect the dots on here. Some users actually expected more from last year's defense.

Ron, there were only a few posters here that wanted him gone. Most realized the defense was missing key personnel.

Why would Spags
LakeGeorgeGiant : 1/17/2017 9:09 am : link
want to make a lateral move to Jacksonville anyhow? From the largest market to one of the smallest just because TX is there? I doubt it, even if TC was the head coach.

Not to mention after having the year he had and expecting to return most of the personnel in '17.

If Spags is looking to move on, it's going to be to a HC spot unless his defense regresses.
A lot of fans I spoke with hated him.
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/17/2017 9:53 am : link
He failed in St Louis and New Orleans and last year was one for the history books bad.
He's not going anywhere...
Dan in the Springs : 1/17/2017 9:58 am : link
this is a marriage that works (for now) for both parties. The Giants have no interest in messing up their superb defensive unit. Spags has a reputation to rebuild. He's not going to get a better opportunity to do it than right here with a team that is poised to lead the league in defense.

Right now he's not likely to get a HC spot. If he did, he'd be gone. Then again, if he were under contract we'd still have that concern.
if he goes he goes.

leave NY for JAX? I think people make too much of possible friendships. My best friend could have his own company, but if it's not a better situation than the one I'm in, I'm staying put. I'd be more concerned about a team like the Redskins poaching him.

unless some team is willing to give him $200 million worth of defensive players.

Taxes for 1. Quality of life, schools, etc. He can set his family up in Ponte Vedra in St. Johns county next to Coughlin and Snee's house. St. Johns county has the best schools in the state of Florida.

Schools? While SJC may have the "best schools in Florida", that's an awfully low bar. I think Spags has access to very fine schools in northern NJ, Westchester, CT, etc. Yes, taxes are less, weather is better, but if his goal is to become a HC again, he's probably better off staying where he is. Top ranked defense on a playoff caliber team with a proven franchise QB.

Your last point is a valid reason for why Spags will stay. Victor mentioned that he doesn't have kids. I wasn't aware of this. I just made the assumption that a middle-age married man had kids. Someone earlier mentioned that he lives in the Philly area. I wouldn't consider schools anywhere other than the local of where a person resides. Growing up in Pennsylvania, Philly schools did not carry a reputation of excellence.
This defense is at the top of the league already.
TMS : 1/17/2017 12:23 pm : link
It should get only better next year with young player maturity and a few new pieces in the draft tand and FA. Why would Spags go anywhere else after building it brilliantly? McAdoo lets Spags run his own unit and our front office knows how how lucky we are to have him. We were a 500 team without him and maybe a SB contender if the offense was better. Think he gets a raise and a n ew contract if anything.
If Spags want another HC job, he needs to stay here
GloryDayz : 1/17/2017 4:55 pm : link
He knows the players, they know him and his schemes, and just had a terrific year, and raised his stock again. Why go somewhere else and risk things dont work out, or work out as good?

Another year or 2 of good defense here, and he's probably back in HC discussions
For all we know
BlackLight : 1/17/2017 9:56 pm : link
the team has already resigned him. It's just possible they didn't announce it.

Either way, the team doesn't appear to think Spags leaving is something they need to worry about.
What is the cap cost?
