Has anyone ever done their own taxes before? I have used an accountant for years but am wondering if it is worth what they charge? How easy is it to do use what is available to us like turbotax for example?
The question is how complicated are your taxes. Do you itemize? All income from wages & interest? Or do you have investments? Own a home?
Here's the clincher for me -- you can do your taxes on Turbo tax, see if it works for your, and then decide right at the end when you have to pay. If you get stuck/overwhelmed it isnt the product for you.
and I am amazed how so many people are terrified of doing their own taxes. They have an instruction manual you can follow. It's annoying and tedious so I get that part sucks, but they aren't difficult. And lots of people fear the IRS is looking to audit them for the littlest mistakes; they aren't. Even if you make a mistake the IRS is not the boogie man. They are willing to work with people and forgive mistakes.
I actually try to convince my clients that don't itemize to not use me. But, they prefer the comfort. Really though, if you know how to follow instructions and you're not a High Net Value individual, you really should be doing your own taxes.
BTW, Turbotax, HRBlock and TaxAct are idiot proof software programs that make it easy for almost anyone to do their taxes.
for all the years, I lived in Jersey and worked in New York, it was a long complicated affair to do the three different filings necessary because they were interconnected in certain ways, but you just take it slow and read the instructions.
I think H&R Block software is cheaper and just as good. Both apps allow you to download your tax data so that you don't have to enter and calculate all of that yourself.
for the past few years after using an H&R Block rep. I used the rep to itemize some business expenses as i work from home. But i found that the exorbitant amount they charge didn't offset what i was going through the pains to itemize.
No I just pay the $50 or whatever it is through TT - takes me about a half hour to get everything done. It's as idiot proof as can be.
like TaxAct or others. Its free if your income is less than 64K or only like $15 if over. Then you can electronically file it for free as well. Link - ( New Window )
