too late to save this season but with Philly's collapse, the Islanders are basically the 'Canes now for the last playoff spot. Something like 91-95 points might actually be enough.
And here I thought I was having a horrible day, my heat went out, found out the car my daughter got into an accident with on Sat. (she walked away from it) got totaled, was told my son does not meet the state requirement for busing by .1 of a mile so they will not reimburse us. Then this happened maybe my luck is turning!
interesting timing considering they looked very good against Boston and Florida over the past week.
2 wins amid a sea of rancid diarrrhea (see: losses to COL, AZ among many others) does not a job save. Poor job constructing lines over the years, an unfailing loyalty/reliance on vets over giving kids a chance, and the death knell of believing that said lackluster vets represented a better chance for the team to succeed if everyone stuck to "the system". Turning a speed/skill team into a bunch of grindahs and chasuhs robbed the team of its identity and success and was a losing "system".
I'm fine with Dougie Fresh as interim coach as long as it's tied to a sweeping change of the staff in the offseason. I'm just happy Cappy isn't around to ruin anyone that may come in a trade later on. I've also read some tweets that the entire staff, minors as well, is being looked at. Still scares me that Snow is at the controls as I really don't want him damaging the team further at the deadline. It would really be something if he steps down in tandem with Cappy's ouster.
No more shuffling lines 3 times a game. No more scapegoating young players and jerking them all around the lineup/press box. No more overplaying veterans based on nothing but veteranness.
I am less hopeful the systems will change under Weight. It would be amazing if they stop conceding the blue line.
The season has been over since Thanksgiving, and this is all meaningless unless Snow goes as well. I pray the ownership has a leash on him come trading deadline.
This was the first signal from Ledecky that the status quo is not acceptable.
Here are some tweets from the hockey universe I found interesting today:

Isles have been evaluating changes for weeks. Obviously first shoe to drop is Capuano, but told evaluation is at both NHL/AHL levels

Staple on @NHLNetwork: I think the game on Saturday when the team were helpless in their own end, Ledecky and Snow sat together #Isles
I do believe a trade is coming, and today was the first, critical domino to fall.

Who do you guys think will be the most likely moved (or attractive options that Snow (if he's still GM)would listen to) and what do you think they're targeting?

I do believe a trade is coming, and today was the first, critical domino to fall.
The prospect of desperate Snow making maneuvers is terrifying.
His last 18 months have been awful.
I've said it before: good cap floor gm, atrocious cap ceiling gm.
Play out the string, let the new regime re make this shit show of a roster
Because it's spitballing that people take as gospel, but the current rumor (and I mentioned to some of our crew that I don't put much stock in it) is Pulock & Ho-Sang for Duchene or Landeskog. If that's legit (and I don't advocate trading Pulock, FWIW), I strongly prefer Landeskog. The Isles are supposedly "in talks" with 2 West teams, and I surmise COL is one of them.
As I said, I wouldn't want to trade Pulock at all, but I suppose if they did it's because they're encouraged with what they see from Pelech, to some degree Mayfield (although I don't think he's a long-term solution) and the fact that Toews has gotten rave reviews. Plus there's Quenneville and Wotherspoon that look promising, so I suppose we feel there's adequate depth to move someone.
To that end, if I had to take a stab at who might garner interest or be viewed as attractive in any moves (note: not all are centerpieces but could be used as part of a trade): F - Bailey (there are contenders that would love to have him as depth), Strome (although he'll be given a new lease on life without Cappy around), Nelson (although they'll see if he is energized by a Cappy ouster), Prince and BVR (although to me, he's off limits). D - Anyone not named Leddy. Unlikely Boychuk gets moved due to his contract and NTC, but Hammer (although unlikely given he's a heart-and-soul guy, but I'd move him in the right deal; in fact I'd rather move Hamonic than Pulock), CDH and Hickey would all be welcomed as 3rd pair depth for a team ascending/contending.

This, x1000. I really hope there are some shackles placed on him by Ledecky/Malkin in these next couple of months. I prefer he not look to trade at this juncture to improve the team. OTOH, if others call to inquire about player availability, if it's a trade that benefits us short and long term, you have to listen. But he's scared me enough that I prefer to just ride this out and clean house in the offseason.
Is the assumption here that Snow isn't at risk after the season? Â
they are going to lose either CdH or Pulock to Vegas. That sucks. Much as I want Snow's keys taken away, trading a D would help. Boychuk's contract is prohibitive. Nobody is touching that. Leddy should be untouchable. That leaves Hamonic. He is righthanded and on a reasonable deal.
Can't imagine that's the case. With the closer hands-on observation in the past 2 months from Ledecky, also speaking to ownership/management of other teams around putting a first class front office structure together, Garth's feet just got a little closer to the fire today. I don't think the typical smugness we see from Garth will be of help to him nor viewed favorably by ownership. He's said the right things today, but he'll now be held accountable for making improvements. If not, he'll die by the sword based on his own comments today:
Quote:
“100 percent [the record is on me]. I don’t think there’s a player on our roster who’s had a hand in the drafting, picking up players off waivers, free agent signings, trades…not the trainers or staff. I’m not hiding from the fact that it starts with me.”
Think we'll return to the pesky team that didn't stop skating and had an awesome fore-check?
This is why he should've been fired much sooner. We went from one of the most exciting teams to watch to a team that got dominated alot! Even though we won a playoff series finally, the panthers controlled the play the entire time. Unable to body them off the puck or clearing it out of the zone. Wtf were we doing the last 2 years?
they put up that half-ass, 11 shot performance in game 7 against the Caps. Typical BBI, I've been ostracized since then. It only happened this year when opinions changed.
That being said, it's about time. Except , in true Islanders fashion, this was handled poorly. If Fred was going, the jerkoff GM would have been included. Like many have conveyed, the current GM should not have any hand in the upcoming crucial decisions regarding a future coach or roster. This current roster of 3rd liners is up against the cap, and improvements are going to be extremely difficult. The owners should have constructed a real plan and dumped all the garbage in one swoop. So, now we are again left to watch some fool try to correct his own failure.
that Snow will be selecting the new coach, work hand & hand with Ledecky. Sorry people, Snow, the architect of this pile of puke, will most likely remain. It makes me think the new owners are just as stupid as the previous owner.
Don't see him as all that different than Capuano. Keep Weight for now and get a guy you really want after the season. They need to determine which route they want to go from a philosophy perspective. Commit to a college coach or young AHL mind, or go for the established coach. Take the time to make the right call, IMO.
Finally...now you can stop wrestling those midgets and get back to business!
Wrestling midgets always 1st but I will definitely free up some time for the Isles now.
I did listen to the Panther game on the drive back from a match at Lycoming College on Friday night. Got to hear the Tavares hat trick while passing the time.
Really blows that we all know this needed to be done a year+ ago.
I guess the "swaggah" from yesterday's win wasn't enough to save Simple Jack.
Rangers lost to the Hurricanes! Grrr.

Is Halak being groomed to replace Garth?
This makes perfect sense though. Now someone different will be in charge of the power play so it's bound to improve.

Now, we can just wait for the magical day when that egomaniacal gasbag, otherwise known as Garth Snow, walks the plank.
Also see trade rumors with Florida and Colorado. No names flying
Agree about Gallant. More old school retreads are not exciting. Still holding out hope for Krueger.

First step hire a new President and let him hire a GM.
Let the GM hire a coach.
I'd like to see them bring in Scott Stevens behind the bench.
