Here are a few prospects who might catch JR’s eye. Dan Skipper (OT, Arkansas) - A mammoth (6-foot-10, 325-pound) mauling tackle from Arkansas. Skipper is a beast in the run game and moves better than his size would suggest. Erik Magnuson (RT, Michigan) - Magnuson is a strong offensive tackle with solid feet in pass protection. He played all over the Michigan offensive line, starting at right tackle, right guard, and left guard. Eric Saubert (TE, Drake) - One of the sleepers at the tight end position. Saubert is an athletic and natural receiver with the size (6-5, 250) to play tight end or H-back. Aleck Torgerson (QB, Pennsylvania) - The Giants have reportedly expressed interest in Torgersen, and the Philadelphia Eagles were seen talking to him after practice on Monday. Elijah McGuire (RB, Louisiana-Lafayette) - A potential sleeper in a crowded running back class, McGuire is a compact back at 5-9, 205 pounds. He brings the athleticism to run outside the tackles, the toughness to run between them, and outstanding receiving ability. Jalen Myrick (CB, Minnesota) - Myrick ascended to Minnesota’s No. 1 1 corner spot in the 2016 season and responded well. He racked up 41 tackles, 11 passes defensed, and an interception while frequently matching up on top receivers. He also reportedly stood out on the first day of practices. |
First off, what does "run mauling" mean? Secondly, by that logic, because of Cedric Jones, we should never have drafted Strahan, Osi, Tuck, JPP, etc. Skipper is not a first round pick; he's just an intriguing prospect.
To BB'56:
I do think Skipper will be on JR's radar considering his reported interest in Nate Solder a few years back. Very similar measurables (although I believe Solder was a bit lighter coming out).
I think Myrick could be of interest as well. He acquitted himself quite well last year with two future NFL corners alongside him (so he'd theoretically have been the weak link) and has done a credible job this year. Could be nice CB depth.
I hadn't heard of any interest linked to Torgerson yet, but I could see why he'd be intriguing as a PS-stash project QB. I'd have a hard time seeing him as a potential Eli successor, but I could see him being a long-term backup with Johnson as the bridge at QB2 for a season or two.
Magnuson definitely seems to possess the versatility that the Giants value on the OL, but I don't know if he's any good - clearly the former is useless unless the latter exists. Unless, of course, anyone thinks there's value in a player who can stink at multiple positions. That's not to say that Magnuson stinks - he never stood out to me one way or the other the few times I watched UM.

Tackles are supposed to pass block. We made a mistake by drafting a hulking run blocking "LT" thinking he'd become an average pass blocker.

Kiel is the QB at Cincinnati. ND transfer. Reads defenses well. Good pocket presence. Accuracy on short and intermediate throws is generally good. But not a big enough arm, especially on the outs and deep balls. The tighter windows at that level will give him problems. Also tends to stare down receivers. Late round/FA. Kiel has already reached his ceiling IMO, so I'd pass, even on day three.

Kiel was the top-ranked HS PP. He has amazing arm talent, but is extremely inconsistent and is very injury-prone as well. Still, we're talking about a priority free agent. He's worth a gamble on, IMO. AcidTest had a pretty good scouting report on him.
Wise Jr. had a down senior year, but he's one year removed from accumulating 8 sacks in his final 7 games of that year...all against SEC opponents. That opened some eyes, including mine. He's very long, rangy and athletic, but again inconsistent. I would look for him to be taken early on Day 3. I like Wise Jr. and Tanoh Kpassagnon as Day 3 guys.

I didn't watch as much college ball this year as I have in the past, so I'll be paying close attention to the Shrine Game as well as the Senior Bowl.
