New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is the NFC East comeback player of the year as voted on by the four reporters covering the division for ESPN.com.

I keep hearing the morning

hosts on the WFAN (NY sports radio) saying that they think JPP will end up in Dallas?! Do these guys even know what Dallas's cap situation is like? Boomer, Carton and Christie all think he could end up in Dallas. How could Dallas afford him? I think we'll offer a fair deal to him ,but someone is probably going to outbid us. Anyway, I thought Carton was a buffoon, but Christie takes the cake!

two quick moves I think the Cowboys will make.

Trading Romo and cutting Witten get them to 6.3 under the cap.

Sean Lee and Doug Free have big cap numbers but I can't see them dumping them.

That being said, they will have 6.3 to sign rookies, with Brandon Carr, Barry Church, Terrell Mcclain, Moe Claiborne, Ronald Leary, and Gavin Escobar as free agents. These players were all starters with Escobar being a key contributor.

I doubt they could find a way to sign JPP without also dumping Sean Lee, Doug Free, and letting the above players all walk.
I can't see them dumping Jason Witten

retire or restructure? Maybe, retire? I doubt it.
Why would they cut Jason Witten?
Brown Recluse : 1/18/2017 9:14 am : link
The guy is ancient and seems to move as slow as molasses, but he is still always open and knows how to get a first down.

Witten is due 7.4 million next year and the Cowboys are already over the cap.

I'm sorry. 12.4 mil against the cap. Dallas saves 7.4 cutting him.

Trading Romo creates 19.6 in dead money. Free and Witten are both in the last years of their deal. I suppose they could both get extended, salary lowered this year, escalating next year when that Romo dead money clears up.
Who wants Romo?
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/18/2017 9:27 am : link
What's the over/under on the number of games he plays next year?
JPP goes home to Miami after they fix their o-line. Sound familiar?
Ivan15 : 1/18/2017 9:29 am : link
They will rid themselves of Mario Williams.

Last year:

The Texans didn't even meet with Osweiler before handing him that contract.

Jets gave Fitzpatrick 12 mil to play 1 year with all his known issues.

Skins gave Cousins 19 mil franchise tag

This year:

Rumor is Pats are asking for a 1st and 3rd for Jimmy G. If they don't get that they're happy to hold onto him

Cousins is looking for a long term deal worth 25 mil plus

And of course, you'll have your Hoyers, Fitzpatricks, etc.

Teams are so QB starved I can see several willing to gamble on Romo with the other options being limited.
The Giants aren't going to let a top DE in his prime

walk for nothing. He's an asset to the Giants and they are smart business men. I believe they will make him a fair offer and if he declines, they will tag him. They can still control his fate and I believe they will. I see no scenario in which they just let one of the better DE's who is in his prime walk when they are so far under the cap.
i just cant see them cutting Witten

i know its a business but Jerry seems attached to some of these guys. I think they'll restructure him.

They could have just retained VErnon who is younger and safer than JPP. Miami DL isn't bad at all as is. Maybe JPP goes to Jax with Coughlin. Closer to home, they are 1 billion under the cap..

Gun to my head I think JPP stays here with the Giants. 25-30 mil in guarantees.

I mostly agree. At worst we'd be wise to franchise him while looking to deal him. Now, if after doing so we couldn't work out a trade and needed the cap space to sign some other FAs, we might eventually need to lift the franchise tag and lose him for nothing.
The Giants have plenty of space
Keith : 1/18/2017 11:53 am : link
and plenty of ways to create more. I don't see that being an issue and letting him walk. Make him play out the season on his franchise tag.
