NFT: Living in Las Vegas?

Ron Johnson 30 : 1/18/2017 9:34 am
I'm curious if anyone lives there and what it's like. I'm exploring a great opportunity there but I'm very concerned about living there. This is not a life time appointment but it would 3 - 4 years.

I've been to Vegas many times for conferences and despise the casinos. I would rather go hiking or fishing than hang out on the strip.

Any first hand experience and tips would be appreciated.
I know

a few people that moved to Vegas from Northern California. One guy works in Ca. and fly's to Vegas every weekend. Home prices are pretty good.(compared to Northern Ca.)
There's some stunning homes

out at Lake Las Vegas that were shockingly cheap (but that might be compared to the craziness of London). If you're a nature guy and you like the desert then it would be a beautiful place to be. I loved playing golf out there.
Hiking

There is some good hiking in Las Vegas. During the hot months most hikers head to Mt Charleston. During the colder months most head to the east side. Hiking the hot springs and historical trails around Lake Mead. There is also the Redrock loop which has many trails. Kayaking is another another favorite
There is a guy

on here who lives in Vegas. gtt something.

My mother lives there. She initially worked in finance at a casino, but has since retired and rarely goes to the strip. Usually just to see me or occasionally for dinner at a casino.

There is a lot to do in the area and short (or long) drives away that include many outdoor recreational activities.

most locals that I know (my sister, aunt and cousin also live there) rarely go to the strip. they have local casinos, restaurants, and retail they usually prefer.
Thanks everyone

I'm leaning towards taking the offer. I'll rent for at least a year and keep my house in upstate NY.

We're empty nesters. My wife travels frequently and works from home so the only requirement for location is proximity to an airport.

Flights are cheap so we'll return once a month. I see a boat on Lake Mead in my future.
appears cheap to live but

I just hate the scenery. Some people love it.
I love the NE forests, steams, lakes, etc
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/18/2017 3:33 pm : link
but we'll see how well I adapt. And flights home are cheap
No

an NHL franchise in the fall and it won't be long before the Raiders move there. There ya go.
Just because you live there
Gman11 : 1/18/2017 4:17 pm : link
doesn't mean that the only thing to do there is gamble. I'm sure there are plenty of places to do what you like to do.
I understand

I've done a lot of research. Also, the options for weekend outings are endless. However, the only resident I've spoken with is the person trying to convince me to take the job.
I live in Vegas and it's terrific

I'm on Summerlin, (google it) I'm up in the Red Rock canyon, golf, tennis, fabulous hiking. Red rock casino, suncoast and rampart casinos right here. no need to go to the strip. everything is new, the roads are terrific as is the climate. winters are in the 50's while looking up you see snow covered mountains. plenty of fishing (lake Mead) . Utah is 1 and a half hours away to Zion National park, skiing etc. for local skiing you can go to Mt Charleston, 9 thousand feet and a half hour away. when there you will think u are in Vermont. And the best part is football at 10am, night games starting at 5:30. two Giant sports bars. also there are more restaurants here locally then you could ever go to. also u will never be lonely. all asian all the time. what else?
also i never gamble and rarily go to the strip.
gtt350 : 1/18/2017 4:23 pm : link
once u are a local u will understand. you only go if u have company or if there is a show u r interested in
Thanks!

I hate gambling and casinos. That's one of the reasons I dreaded conferences there. The best time I had was going to a 24 hour par 3 course at like midnight. That was many years ago.

I'm going to continue to research it but I think I'm going. My wife is all for it.
I'm originally from NJ and the change in lifestyle was drastically
gtt350 : 1/18/2017 4:31 pm : link
wonderful. Spring out here starts in Feb, temps in 60's and 70's and everything blooming. Summers are hot but no humidity, people vacation out of state in summer. Alaska, and Hawaii are big choices. also McCarron International airport is first rate. flights direct and on time.
let me know when u come out i'll show u around
If you decide to come out choose the Summerlin side not Henderson

Sounds like a great opportunity. You'll look back years from now and be happy you did it.

Maybe, but not enough to realize any significant increase in value in just 3-4 years. He would pay more in fees during the purchase and sell process and may end up under water. Plus, the amount of principal you add in just 3-4 years on a 30 year mortgage is insignificant. So... IMO renting is better in this situation.
I would buy, prices are rising and the bang for your buck out here
gtt350 : 1/18/2017 11:50 pm : link
is outstanding. construction going on all over, Vegas is booming again
Don't buy
Patrick77 : 1/19/2017 8:23 am : link
If it is a 3-4 year plan buying makes no sense. I forget the number of years where buying becomes the obvious choice (5? 7?) but at such a short time span unless you know housing is going to appreciate at insane bubble rates short term after you buy (which you don't) buying makes no sense.
I've moved many times
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/19/2017 10:25 am : link
I'm a buyer not a renter but only after 6 months. I want to learn the area before selecting a home based long term. There is always some risk but I prefer to own.
gtt
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/19/2017 11:51 am : link
my office is NW of downtown on Vegas Drive. I prefer to live close to work, at least for 6 months. You mentioned the west side is better. What about north? My goal is to get a 6 month rental and then go from there.
Isn't Vegas
fkap : 1/19/2017 12:25 pm : link
considered one of the worst US cities for air pollution?
It's number 10
Ron Johnson 30 : 1/19/2017 1:17 pm : link
well below Dallas, Houston and Metro Washington
a few things, air pollution is not a problem up in Summerlin and is
gtt350 : 1/22/2017 8:34 am : link
also 5 degrees cooler than the strip throughout the year because of altitude. It can get windy here and that clears out any air pollution very fast.

Ron if u want to be close to work so be it. I prefer Summerlin for the scenery, topography and must less traffic than the other directions. Google all the areas and do the research. on the highways out here u can get anywhere relatively quickly
Ron, take a long weekend out here and check out all
gtt350 : 1/22/2017 8:36 am : link
the areas then write the trip off as a business expense which it is
