NFT: Best movies you've seen this year ...

Manny in CA : 1/19/2017 2:25 am
Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, Sully, in that order..

Mel Gibson may be a hated man in Hollywood, but man he did one heck of a job in Hacksaw Ridge. The indomitable spirit of the American conscientious objector and the fanatical spirit of the Japanese soldiers is amazingly portrayed.
2016 films?

didn't see Manchester By the Sea, but my wife did and she told me that the movie just ends out of nowhere, like in the middle of the story...

Not really. The ending summed up the movie perfectly, IMO. Maybe she had a different take on it but I felt it was a perfectly fitting ending. Won't go into detail due to spoilers.
Disappointing year for films

The big releases, that is. Usually takes me a while to get through the indie shit.

Two of the most promising based on casts/director/plot, Arrival & Passengers, were misses. Man did I hate Arrival. Seemingly great cast, inventive director with solid past work (Sicario flawed but decent, Prisoners tremendous), but it was a near complete miss. Didn’t earn the payoff which was contrived anyway. Whitaker, who is a great actor, phoned it in and was awful.

Hell or High Water the big exception. A fantastic movie that, despite coming out over the summer, is now surging with some BP buzz.

I have not seen Manchester by the Sea or Noctural Animals yet. I expect to like the latter since Gyllenhaal is the best actor under 50 who picks good scripts.

Capt Fantastic was good and original.

The Lobster you’ll like if you’re stoned and dig Orwell. Rachel Weisz still very bangable.
1) Hell or High Water
Giantophile : 1/19/2017 11:14 am : link
2) Captain Fantastic
3) Cafe Society

Still need to see Manchester by the Sea, Arrival, Star Wars, La La Land. Man, having kids is tough.

Also just saw this gem from New Zealand w/ Sam Neil - Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Maybe not great cinema but a highly enjoyable watch.

That movie was AMAZING until the last 10 minutes. Worst ending I've ever seen. Ruined my week.
I'll second

Not just hollywood. If he didnt want me to dislike him, maybe he should stop blaming my religion for starting all the wars (and other stuff).
All 10 Cloverfield lane had to do [SPOILERS]

was nix the absurd Molotov cocktail fight scene. It’s the same basic ending with the same message…the aliens are still there (maybe show some walking or flying deep in the background). Then keep the last part (which was good) where after listening to the radio about the invasion, she turns toward where the fighting is going rather than to the safe zone.

I dunno what the writers/director was thinking. So bizarre to want to mix in that campy bullshit when you have a well-made, inventive film with a stupid good performance preceding it.
Passengers
x meadowlander : 1/19/2017 11:36 am : link
3/4 of that flick is perfection - fantastic production, direction, effects - great performances from Chris Pratt and Jen Lawrence - end of the movie turns into typical action flick poop, but it was a really enjoyable flick.

10 Cloverfield is a good pick. Excellent movie.

Rogue One sucked balls. "You ever think about HOW they got the plans for the thermal port on the Death Star? They could make an ENTIRE MOVIE just about THAT!!!"

No they can't. Star Wars movies are supposed to be jaw-dropping awesome. Rogue One gave me nothing. NOTHING. OK - it WAS nice to see the ole' X and Y wings again. And I liked the new funny robot.

After the phenomenal job JJ Abrams did with the Star Trek relaunch, I had very high hopes for the Star Wars flicks... too high, I guess...

Great movie. Was so long but I wasn't bored for one minute of it.
Some good ones this year.

Dr. Strange was pleasantly surprising. Very cool movie.
The Nice Guys was my favorite movie of the year.
Arrival I enjoyed a lot. It was nice to have an different kind if alien movie.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe was the best horror movie I saw in the past year.
Conjuring 2 gives it a run for its money. Probably scarier, with that effing nun.
Rogue One was awesome. Loved it.
Hell or High Water was fantastic.
Fantastic Beasts was fun if you are into HP
Hardcore Henry was insane in the best way.
The Accountant was very really good with a nice twist to it.

I'm sure I'm leaving a ton out.
