I'm sure you wish you were in Atlanta this weekend (like all of us), but Hawaii isn't an awful consolation prize.
Nice job with the recap Bob

There is plenty of work to do. Based on the comments it seems like a pricy proposition to re-sign JPP.
Finally got down to listening..PD and JS were very good.

A few takeaways:

-Your Panel's opinion that perhaps you franchise Hankins and sign JPP long term is a good idea, but the caveat is that Teams with boatloads of money can lure him away, especially since the DE pickings after JPP are virtually nil..I had hoped that your guys would have addressed the fact that JPP is gonna be 29 and has had those back issues..Not a minor point

-Totally agree with your takeaway Bob(which one called you Bobby?) in that the Giants since they opened Met Life in 2010, have absolutely reestablished home field advantage which definitely fed the players..

-Agree about Manning; wasn't his best year but he executed 6 4th qtr comebacks this year, second only to Stafford, yet no one really mentions that..

Thanks again

In regards to JPP he just turned 28 the first of January so your point on he will be 29 is kind of off base IMO. In regards to age of the D-line he is 2 yr’s older than OV and a year younger than Snack’s so I really do not see age being any factor at all.

And in regards to his back injury issues that was in 2013 and was addressed by surgery I think we are long past that issue being a chronic problem or worry I could be wrong?

I know you are not a JPP fan and have not been for awhile that’s fine I just don’t see the point making issues that
are not there.

Just my 2 cents
I have made the point before, but of late have not been that

clear as respect to his age. What I should be saying is if you franchise him this year, then at 29, do you sign him to a long term deal? I honestly meant that with the 29 age thing..

No, you are correct, I am not a JPP fan, but am objective enough not to continually find fault with him, that is, he had a very good year and helped our D a lot..

Two things I've mentioned elsewhere:

1-Jacksonville has more money, it's his home State, TC is there and there's no income tax..I don't see us outbidding them or some other teams who have outrageous amounts of money to offer. Too, JPP picked a great year to be a FA as the market after him is virtually threadbare..

2-A Franchise Tag will be approx. 17 mil..That's 17 mil that cannot be amortized and greatly reduces our chances of improving more pressing needs on O (OL, TE, WR and RB)..Those needs are more important for us to seriously contend than to get stuck with a hard cap hit of 17 mil..

I believe even JPP himself said he'd always have back issues prior surgery notwithstanding
How's Hawaii, Bob?

Is anyone ever going to take down Langer?

You said you agree it is a good idea to sign JPP and tag Hankins but then say it is not smart to tag JPP. Do you realize the difference to tag JPP and to tag Hankins? No, it is not smart to tag Hankins. That wpuld be paying him well above what he is worth. The FT for JPP is about what he is worth. Yes, signing a player long term lowers his initial cap hit which is beneficial but if Hankins is taking up $13.6 million on the cap this year (I think that is the price for DTs) then that is a horrible use of cap space.

You left out my caveat in the same sentence..Their point was in franchising Hankins, you get to see for one more year, whether or not this guy is great with Snacks in a role others claim can be filled with any decent DT or a real solid player on his own. If the latter you can be confident in signing him long term..You need to listen to the podcast for context, if you haven't already
Imo

Putting the FT on Hankins is not an option. It is too much money that would handcuff our team. And if we don't know what we have in Hankins by now then he isn't worth almost $14 million against the cap.

And, I am not talking about long term. I am comparing the two statements that you made that basically contradict each other. If we sign JPP and tag Hankins it is going to be very difficult to fix the other issues we have as you pointed out.

Signing JPP and tagging Hankins may cost more than signing Hankins and tagging JPP.
Personally, whether I agree with Papa et al's take on FT for Hankins
Big Blue '56 : 1/21/2017 12:11 pm : link
or not, I prefer that they give the tag to neither..

I cannot see them signing JPP unless they break the bank, which would be counterproductive to what they need to do with the O, cap dollars-wise..Nothing is impossible, but if JPP hits FA, it will be impossible to compete with the others who are dripping with money..

Sign Hankins, let JPP walk unless a miracle happens, improve the O with the 17 mil hard cap hit that cannot be amortized that JPP would cost us..

We can survive and do pretty well without JPP if we use our resources to fixing the OL and TE positions especially if the draft doesn't ultimately produce what we need..

Our D will still be strong without JPP imo. As good? perhaps not, but if we don't allocate much of our resources to the O, it probably won't matter if we retain JPP
I like Schmeelk

Tagging Hankins?
Ten Ton Hammer : 1/21/2017 7:52 pm : link
Are we talking about the franchise tag? That's ridiculous. He's nowhere close to that kind of player.
Yeah that's what JS was taking about
The_Boss : 1/21/2017 8:12 pm : link
Said because there was no way the NYG would totally exhaust their FA cap $$ (which is a ridiculous assumption to make), it made sense to do it this year if they were convinced it's a SB or bust season and they didn't want to step back on defense w/out him.

I think it's a ludicrous idea. First of all, we'd look like horse's asses in giving a slightly above average DT franchise $$, if only for a season. Secondly, premium FA OL are costly. I don't think JR is gonna be shopping in the bargain aisle for OL help.
I don't get your vendetta against JPP
David in LA : 1/21/2017 9:02 pm : link
he's a very good natured guy, that plays hard when he's on the field, and wisened up after his accident. 2 years from turning 30, and maybe a top 3 two way DE. You do what you can to work something out with a guy like that.
